It’s been about six months since Kathy Griffin’s last epic plea for attention. It must be time for her publicists (how’s that for a thankless job?) to their earn their retainer again. Everyone’s heard ad nauseam how she was blacklisted after her severed Trump head stunt. The world is hip to her story about Trump loosing government agents on her. And there may even be those who believe, all evidence to the contrary, that she’s funny and likable enough to have survived her attempted career suicide-by-OrangeMan.
Here we go again. If you think the manure-spreaders of sensationalism who masquerade as ethical practitioners of journalism learned anything from last week's MAGA-bashing Covington Catholic High School hoax, I have three words for you: Ha, ha, ha. On Tuesday morning, uncorroborated claims by actor Jussie Smollett that he was the victim of a “brutal” hate crime by Trump supporters in Chicago went viral across social media.
Hey, Tom Brady, while you and your coaches and teammates are preparing to take on the Los Angeles Rams in Sunday's Super Bowl, you would do well to trash that MAGA hat sitting in your locker. That's the advice you're getting from Daniel Radcliffe, star of the Harry Potter movies, who tells Brady he's terrific and he's behind him, but the hat must go. President Donald Trump is, after all, as bad or worse than Potter's disgusting antagonist, Voldemort.
As Tom Petty once sang, even the losers get lucky sometimes. The anti-Trump media has done a horrible job trying to convince Americans we shouldn’t have a wall at the southern border. But lo and behold, they’ve received a little gift from the gods -- a bit of serendipity to grasp at in the absence of an argument. A few days ago, writers for both CBS online and Variety uncovered an old 1950s TV episode in which a manipulative “con man” named Trump convinces a fear-stricken town to buy his wall. When you’re a partisan hack, that’s more than a whacky coincidence. It’s a fateful lesson from the past because the show’s plot twists “closely mirror what is happening today.”
2018 was declared the “Year of the Woman” by the Hollywood feminist horde, yet once again studies have shown that such progressive grandstanding amounted to, well, grandstanding. On January 3, Variety took another look under Hollywood’s diversity hood and found that women suffered “Radical Underrepresentation” in the industry during 2018
It’s beginning to look like the Motion Picture Academy can’t find anyone virtuous enough to spend three hours stroking celebrity egos. After Kevin Hart caved to public pressure against gay-joke Tweets made almost a decade ago, it’s hard to imagine who is so unspotted as to deserve the job.
If you didn’t get what was significant about Thursday, November 15th, then maybe you just don’t understand that everyday of the calendar year is a solemnity celebrating diversity for diversity’s sake. Thursday’s festivities included Latina (ahem LatinX) actress Eva Longoria trashing President Trump and the white patriarchy for “attacking” her as both a Latino and as a woman.
Michael Moore’s anti-American polemics and bomb-throwing “journalism” are usually taken with a grain of salt. But in the era of Trump, the salt shaker is nowhere to be found. And his new movie, Fahrenheit 11/9, has a Rotten Tomato score that indicates that the conspiracy-peddling director has hit the sweet spot in terms of what the media wants.
Comedian Bill Maher donated $1 million to Senate Democrats to try to help them retake a majority as a result of the midterm elections this November.
The New York Times estimates transgender people make up, “0.6 percent of the adult population.” This doesn’t stop activists from bashing Hollywood for not catering to them. GLAAD and 5050by2020, led by Jill Soloway, creator of Transparent, an Amazon series starring a man playing a transgender woman, got “four dozen production companies, talent agencies, film studios, and advocacy groups” to show their “support for expanded LGBTQ representation."
Variety magazine covers show business but it also a liberal publication. Sometimes the two areas conflict such as their July 9 article about Democrat senate candidate from Texas, Beto O'Rourke, making treks to Hollywood to raise campaign money. Not something you really want known in Texas.
Actor and director Tim Robbins recently made sure to remind audiences of how much of a non-racist, anti-Trump saint he is. On Saturday, Tim Robbins attended the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Screening two of his own films at the event, Robbins was a guest of honor who used his time behind the mic to wax political. This time, the actor took aim at Trump and the recent Supreme Court approval of the president’s travel ban.
