New York Times reporter Jennifer Vineyard had a rundown of commentary on the controversial new movie “Joker,” a grittier-than-usual take on how the clown prince of crime came to be. Predictably, Vineyard hit all the liberal panic buttons in “‘Joker’:" Is it incel propaganda? Might it even be dangerous? The film arrived in theaters last week accompanied by F.B.I. warnings about the threat of related gun violence..."



The scuzzy new “supervillain” movie "Joker” has caused a strange moral panic among the left, who are equating the empathetic portrayal of the Joker to sympathy for the circumstance of “incels” – troubled men rejected by potential sexual partners. But New Yorker critic Richard Brody found a novel left-wing angle in his attack. He constructs an edifice of racism, plucking specific notorious attacks from the pages of New York City’s notorious crime history and overlays them on specific, superficially similar violent scenes from the movie -- then nervily called out the filmmakers for not hewing to the truth of the actual events (again, in a fictional movie about a comic-book character).



Mark Hamill, the actor behind legendary childhood sci-fi hero Luke Skywalker, adopted the role of playground bully on Twitter this weekend, making fun of Ivanka Trump, her husband, and their child for the world to see. The man famous for his depiction of resistance to anger and hatred, couldn’t even look at an innocent photo without turning to the dark side. Shame on him.



Todd Phillips, director of the upcoming Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix, is pushing back against critics and protestors who claim that his R-rated comic book adaptation may inspire violence. Both he and Warner Brothers Studios insist that neither the fictional character, “nor the film, is an endorsement of real-world violence of any kind,” with the director calling out the critics as being part of the “far left” outrage culture.



Imagine being so deluded that a hellish, child-eating, serial killer clown is one of your icons because his make-up is fabulous and his theatricality hints at what you hope is a homosexual orientation. Now imagine being disappointed the horrific harlequin isn’t gay.



The “fall’s most hotly-anticipated” movie (according to host Michael Strahan and his Good Morning America co-hosts) is supposedly Hustlers, the new flick about strippers who intoxicate and steal from arrogant, rich Wall Street bros because feminism, baby.



Traditional sexual and gender norms have no relevance in pop culture anymore. We’re past the point where the rebellious phases of youth are seen as just that, and now they’re lauded as some sort of standard that older folks need to adhere to, lest they be called fascists. Though is it really that convincing that since Miley Cyrus and Kristin Stewart can’t stay with a man, “heterosexuality is just not working?”



Trouble in paradise? We all know lefty Hollywood types hate Trump, and Trump’s supporters. And conservatives. And religious people. And rural America -- okay, so they hate a lot of folks. But one group could always count on Tinsel Town’s love and money: Democrats. Bill, Hillary, Barack -- even Al Gore -- were rock stars among the power-worshipping lefties.



Did you hear about The Hunt and assume the worst from elitist lefty Hollywood? Did you watch the trailer, raise an eyebrow and say, “Wait, deplorables are the good guys!” Well, either way, you were wrong, according to the director. Craig Zobel has spoken publicly about the film for the first time since Universal shelved it in the wake of the El Paso and Dayton mass shootings, telling Variety he had intended to satirize right and left in our ongoing culture wars and use the critique as the launch point “to make a fun, action thriller.”



Sometimes, reading about stuff lefties find controversial is like observing two people argue over what the proverbial tree that fell in the forest would have sounded like if anybody had been around. It’s all rather obscure and meaningless.



The New York Times’s Cara Buckley (“a culture reporter who covers bias and equity in Hollywood”), complained Hollywood wasn’t embedding enough climate change messaging in their blockbuster movies in Saturday’s “Hollywood Sells Doom, Not Hope On Climate -- Critics say villains and dystopias obscure crisis-alleviating actions.” One suspects that the complaint that in some films “environmentalist are criminals” is the true concern: Perhaps Buckley and company are just annoyed that left-wing environmentalists sometimes feature as movie villains, as opposed to the usual villain of corporate raider or military madman?



The stand-up comic Jim Gaffigan’s new film caught him by surprise, but not for anything in the movie itself. He noticed how professional film critics treated the tale of a man fronting not one but two families. Gaffigan shared his dismay at the film’s critical reaction on the latest episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience.”
