Piers Morgan on Charleston Shooting: ‘Your Gun Culture Is Disgusting'

As surely as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, whenever a gun-related mass murder occurs anywhere in the United States, former Cable News Network host and current editor-in-charge for the DailyMall.com website Piers Morgan comes out swinging while demanding more stringent gun control.

Due to the tragic murder of nine people when a young, white gunman opened fire inside the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., on Wednesday, Morgan declared: “Such a sickening outrage. Wake up, America. Your gun culture is disgusting."

During a radio commentary for the Black America Web site on Thursday, CNN Tonight host Don Lemon startled many of his listeners when he declared that the culture of “political correctness” in America has become “dangerous.”

He also claimed that after 25 years in the news business, he believes “liberals are the least tolerant people.”

As NewsBusters has often reported, MSNBC's line-up has led the cable news channel to a freefall in the ratings, with Baltimore Sun media critic David Zurawik blasting the schedule as “unwatchable” and “24 hours a day of mess.”

In an article posted on Thursday, Politico columnist Dylan Byers reported that the channel's daytime year-to-date viewership “is down 21 percent overall and 41 percent in the coveted 25- to 54-year-old demographic.”

Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly used Wednesday evening's edition of The O'Reilly Factor to hammer “haters on both sides” of the political divide during a segment entitled “Hating President Obama.”

He began by stating: “At the height of the Iraq War, the vilification of President Bush the younger was off the chart,” with “the left in America accusing him and Vice President Dick Cheney of lying to get us into the war.”

CNN's Full-page NYT Ad Boasts 'New Day' Ratings Top MSNBC's 'Morning Joe'

The perpetual battle for last place in the cable “news” channels took an interesting turn on Thursday, when the Cable News Network took out a full-page advertisement in the New York Times claiming that while MSNBC's Morning Joe program was “leaning forward” -- a reference to that channel's motto -- CNN's New Day show was “moving ahead!”

“SORRY, JOE,” the title glared before the text below bragged: “In January, CNN's New Day beat MSNBC's Morning Joe for the 4th month in a row in total viewers and the 7th month in a row” among adults in the critical demographic of viewers from 25 to 54 years of age.

For more than three decades, international correspondent Jim Clancy reported the news and anchored several programs for the Cable News Network.

That long-time record came to an abrupt end on Friday, when he left CNN more than a week after he got into an angry Twitter argument in which he claimed that people who disagree with him regarding Mohammed cartoons are “agents for Israel” and used a derogatory term for disabled individuals.

 

CNN Ends 2014 With All-time Low Ratings, MSNBC Falls to Third Place Among News Channels

Just when it seemed that things couldn't get any worse for the liberal Cable News Network and MSNBC channels, the Deadline website released a year-end review by reporter Lisa de Morales on ratings for CNN in prime time, which hit an all-time low of 516,000, and viewers in the vital 25- to 54-year-old demographic fell dramatically to 126,000, the second lowest number ever.

Meanwhile, the “Lean Forward” network lost 17 percent of its prime-time demographic audience to end 2014 with a viewership of 169,000 in the demographic and a total audience of 590,000. While these numbers outpaced CNN's ratings in this category, MSNBC fell far below its competitor in several other statistics.

Even though It's only been a few days since the grand jury in Ferguson, Mo., decided not to charge police officer Darren Wilson with any crimes connected to his shooting of black 18-year-old Michael Brown on August 9, racism has become a hot topic for columnists and commentators.

One extensive discussion on the subject was “The New Threat: Racism Without Racists,” which was written by John Blake, a blogger for the Cable News Network who quoted Duke University social expert Eduardo Bonilla-Silva on Friday as stating: “The main problem nowadays is not the folks with the hoods, but the folks dressed in suits.”

Poll: MSNBC Least Trusted TV News Source, Fox News Most Trusted

Most surveys regarding cable news channels focus on ratings and the opinions of their viewers. However, a recent poll conducted by the Brookings and Public Religion Research Institute sought the views of all Americans toward all news sources in the nation.

A mere 5 percent of the respondents called the left-wing MSNBC cable channel their “most trusted” TV news outlet. On the other end of the spectrum, the Fox News Channel was named by 25 percent of the people surveyed, surprisingly more than the 23 percent who pointed to the “mainstream media” broadcast networks and the 21 percent who said they trust the Cable News Network.

Joe Klein Now Watches Bret Baier at Fox News Since CNN Has 'Gone in the Toilet'

While a guest on the 92Y American Conversation program on Sunday, TIME magazine political analyst Joe Klein vented to host Jeff Greenfield of the Public Broadcasting System: “I miss being able to turn on a straight newscast” after returning home at 6 o'clock on weekdays.

He added that the only place he can find such a program in that format and at that time is the Fox News series Special Report With Bret Baier before declaring: “It is such an embarrassment to our profession" that the Cable News Network “has gone in the toilet the way it has.”

'Ragin' Cajun' James Carville Joins Fox News Channel as Liberal Commentator

The people at Fox News are apparently serious about being “fair and balanced” as proved on Thursday, when the network hired veteran Democratic activist James Carville to serve as a contributor of political commentary on the channel.

The “Ragin' Cajun,” who led Bill Clinton's successful presidential campaign in 1992 and spent most of the past decade as a political commentator for the Cable News Network, joins such outspoken liberals as Juan Williams, Kirsten Powers and Bob Beckel on the channel's roster.

Phil Griffin Claims MSNBC 'Has Never Had an Ideology,' But Fox News Does

During an interview with Lloyd Grove of the Daily Beast website, MSNBC president Phil Griffin strained at gnats when he stated that his network “has never had an ideology” but insisted that the dominant Fox News Channel does.

 “An ideology is a single thought across all programs,” he said. “We’ve never had that.” However, Griffin asserted, MSNBC instead has “a progressive sensibility,” which he claimed is not the same as an ideology. “Obviously, I hire people who fit the sensibility” because “we do stay true to facts. You have to build your argument. That's why I call it a sensibility.”
