It took only 12 minutes into their live coverage on Thursday night of the deadly movie theater shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana before CNN Tonight invoked gun control and President Obama with panelists lamenting the lack of “sufficient common sense” on guns, the need for a “more realistic in a interpretation of the Second Amendment” and that the issue will go down in history as President Obama’s “biggest defeat.”

The National Rifle Association annual meeting in Nashville drew nasty coverage from Anita Wadhwani, who reports for the Tennessean and for USA Today. On Saturday, the local paper reported “At NRA, little love for media turnout.” The NRA’s not used to fair and balanced coverage.

Wadwhani dramatically underscored their hostility on Monday with a story headlined “Big conventions, like NRA, can draw sex trafficking.” Commenters quickly jumped on the argument that the Tennessean wasn’t using that crooks-from-outside-town tactic for the home games of the Titans or the Country Music Association Awards.

With less than a week to go before the midterm elections arrive, David Firestone -- a member of the New York Times Editorial Board -- vented his anger in an attempt to diminish the influence the National Rifle Association has on the political process.

In an article entitled “The NRA's Instant Classic Attack Ads,” Firestone accused the national organization of producing false advertisements as part of its role as the “grand master” of fear, “which thrives on putting guns in nervous hands.”

In a Thursday column for The Daily Beast, former CNN contributor Roland Martin attacked the supposed "cowardly bullies" at the National Rifle Association for opposing President Obama's surgeon general nominee. Martin's op-ed follows in the footsteps of MSNBC's Krystal Ball and NBC's Anne Thompson, who politicized the Ebola crisis nearly a week earlier when they bemoaned that due to "Senate dysfunction and NRA opposition, we don't have a surgeon general right now."

Ripping the National Rifle Association has been a common theme coming from Daily Beast contributing writer Cliff Schecter.  (Try his rants that they protect "homicidal maniacs" or are "treasonous and murderous.") This time, however, Schecter took a new angle, criticizing the gun-rights organization for their silence regarding the ongoing protests and riots in Ferguson, Missouri. (Silence? Somehow, he leaves out NRANews.com, which is actively talking about it.)

Schecter barely hid his suggestion that the NRA is nothing more than a bunch of gun-toting racists. He argued that “the NRA professes no kinship for those being crushed beneath the jackboots [in Ferguson]. It seems the NRA is only worried about the civil rights of white people.”
