Following President Barack Obama’s angry reaction Thursday night to the deadly community college shooting in Oregon and pleas to “politicize” mass shootings, the CBS Evening News did just that with a full story lamenting the lack of gun control by laying blame at the feet of the GOP-led Senate and the National Rifle Association (NRA) for their support of candidates in favor of gun rights.

It took only 12 minutes into their live coverage on Thursday night of the deadly movie theater shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana before CNN Tonight invoked gun control and President Obama with panelists lamenting the lack of “sufficient common sense” on guns, the need for a “more realistic in a interpretation of the Second Amendment” and that the issue will go down in history as President Obama’s “biggest defeat.”

As surely as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, whenever a gun-related mass murder occurs anywhere in the United States, former Cable News Network host and current editor-in-charge for the DailyMall.com website Piers Morgan comes out swinging while demanding more stringent gun control.

Due to the tragic murder of nine people when a young, white gunman opened fire inside the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., on Wednesday, Morgan declared: “Such a sickening outrage. Wake up, America. Your gun culture is disgusting."

The National Rifle Association annual meeting in Nashville drew nasty coverage from Anita Wadhwani, who reports for the Tennessean and for USA Today. On Saturday, the local paper reported “At NRA, little love for media turnout.” The NRA’s not used to fair and balanced coverage.

Wadwhani dramatically underscored their hostility on Monday with a story headlined “Big conventions, like NRA, can draw sex trafficking.” Commenters quickly jumped on the argument that the Tennessean wasn’t using that crooks-from-outside-town tactic for the home games of the Titans or the Country Music Association Awards.

A class action suit filed by families of Sandy Hook shooting victims could “go nowhere” because of a 2005 law protecting gun makers, but that crucial point was ignored in most network stories about the lawsuit.

A lawyer representing the families of ten victims of the horrible school shooting that took place in Newtown, Conn., two years ago announced a lawsuit on December 15 against Bushmaster. Bushmaster was the company that produced a gun Adam Lanza used in the shooting.

With less than a week to go before the midterm elections arrive, David Firestone -- a member of the New York Times Editorial Board -- vented his anger in an attempt to diminish the influence the National Rifle Association has on the political process.

In an article entitled “The NRA's Instant Classic Attack Ads,” Firestone accused the national organization of producing false advertisements as part of its role as the “grand master” of fear, “which thrives on putting guns in nervous hands.”

A blogger says the organization is just a bunch of ‘proto-survivalist’ hard-right loonies that won’t lift a finger for Democrats even if they vote its way.

In a Thursday column for The Daily Beast, former CNN contributor Roland Martin attacked the supposed "cowardly bullies" at the National Rifle Association for opposing President Obama's surgeon general nominee. Martin's op-ed follows in the footsteps of MSNBC's Krystal Ball and NBC's Anne Thompson, who politicized the Ebola crisis nearly a week earlier when they bemoaned that due to "Senate dysfunction and NRA opposition, we don't have a surgeon general right now."

Chris Matthews devoted a segment during his MSNBC show Hardball on Wednesday evening to the tragic shooting death of a firearms instructor at a Arizona gun range after a nine-year-old girl accidently shot him with an Uzi submachine gun. Instead of discussing how tragic this incident was or possible safety measures to take in the future, Matthews and his guests chose to rail against the National Rifle Association (NRA) for somehow being connected to this terrible incident.

At the conclusion of the six-and-a-half-minute segment, Matthews shamefully declared: “This is the slippery slope, what we're watching. This is where you get when you go all the way with gun rights. All the way is what it looks like – take a look at that girl. That's a slippery slope to hell.” [MP3 audio here; Video below]

Ripping the National Rifle Association has been a common theme coming from Daily Beast contributing writer Cliff Schecter.  (Try his rants that they protect "homicidal maniacs" or are "treasonous and murderous.") This time, however, Schecter took a new angle, criticizing the gun-rights organization for their silence regarding the ongoing protests and riots in Ferguson, Missouri. (Silence? Somehow, he leaves out NRANews.com, which is actively talking about it.)

Schecter barely hid his suggestion that the NRA is nothing more than a bunch of gun-toting racists. He argued that “the NRA professes no kinship for those being crushed beneath the jackboots [in Ferguson]. It seems the NRA is only worried about the civil rights of white people.”

During Wayne LaPierre's appearance on the Sunday morning edition of NBC's Meet the Press, the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association told host David Gregory that the tragic shooting at the Navy Yards on Monday, September 16, actually reinforced his pro-gun stance. He stated: “When the good guys with guns got there, [the shooting] stopped.”

On Monday morning, Carol Costello -- anchor of the weekday CNN Newsroom program -- referred to the NRA representative's remarks by asserting: “We’ve seen this sad movie before, with Mr. LaPierre;” and grumbled: “At the end of the day, nothing will change.”

Prominently displayed on the BuzzFeed front page as I write this (3:00 p.m. Eastern) is a headline blaring "How The NRA Twitter Handles A Mass Shooting: Silence." The accompanying thumbnail shows the NRA's initials overlaid on an American flag, with the word "fail" in a yellow dot on the upper left-hand corner. "The model is to go silent for at least a day, depending on the scope of the tragedy," notes the subheadline.

The article itself, written by Andrew Kaczynski, is from December 16, 2012,  two days after the Newtown shooting. It was updated this morning to note the following, "Sept. 16, 2013, Washington D.C. Navy Yard Shooting: One Day (And Counting) Without Tweeting." Kaczynski followed that with an embed featuring the last tweet from the NRA's account, from September 15.
