The secular-left group Americans United for Separation for Church and State is rolling out a series of “Voices United” concert events this fall to raise funds. “In these times of increasing fanaticism and heated rhetoric, Americans United needs your support more than ever,” they declare.
So it’s a bit surprising that their most famous opponent of “heated rhetoric” and “fanaticism” is comedienne Sarah Silverman, the infamous one who filmed a skit where she had a one-night stand with God and sent him packing. She's appearing in Los Angeles, and she also offered her “talent” at a similar AU event last fall.
In Tuesday’s Washington Post Express tabloid, there’s an ad for a September 27 concert at the Episcopalian Church of the Epiphany in the District of Columbia. The featured performers are lesbian “womyn’s music festival" artists Melissa Ferrick and Catie Curtis, who loved performing at a gay-left event celebrating the first Obama inauguration in 2009:
Walking among the crowds on Inaugural Day was like a zen parade. We were marching, but not protesting. We were just there to "be here now." There was singing, chanting O-BAM-A, dancing, drumming, smiling and friendliness among stangers. Then the party at the HRC Equality Ball was completely over the top. After my own set, on which I was joined by the fabulous Ingrid Graudins, I got to sing Girls Just Wanna Have Fun with Cyndi Lauper, Rufus Wainwright and Thelma Houston.
On the next day, Curtis is peforming at another "Voices United" benefit at the First Unitarian Church in Cincinnati.
