Outrage? Obama Campaigned In Church, Congregation 'Prayed For Him to Become President'

Last month, Los Angeles Times columnist George Skelton likened the Catholic Church in Los Angeles to "an ugly old political attack dog" and suggested that the state legislature reexamine its tax-exempt status for property. Why? Because Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles spoke out during a Mass against a proposed bill in California that would legalize physician-assisted suicide. He also singled out Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez, who calls himself a Catholic, for supporting the bill. Skelton hyperventilated over the episode and claimed it was a "collision of church and state." He also clamored that Mahony's comments regarding Nuñez "cross[ed] the line."

Meanwhile, presidential candidate Barack Obama made an appearance at South-Central Los Angeles' First AME Church last Sunday (4/29/07). According to the Times, Obama addressed the congregation and "drew a sustained ovation when he rebuked the Bush administration." The paper covered the event with over 1,100 words and a very generous photo. (See an image of the article here.)

In addition, KTLA5 television in Los Angeles reported, "[Obama] said times are changing and a brighter day is ahead -- especially if he is elected president ... Obama danced and sang with the choir and the congregation prayed for him to become president."

KTLA5 also reported (emphasis mine):

[Obama said:] "We are going to usher in a new America ... Not only by providing health care for every American in this country, not only for every child to have a decent education, not only by ending the senseless war in Iraq, but also by electing as president, Barack Obama."

He also called on the community to help ... "This campaign may be a vehicle for your hopes and your dreams, but ultimately it is going to be because of you." ...

[Stevie] Wonder was ushered onto the stage next to Obama, where he sang a song saying in part "Barack Obama is going to be the next president," as the congregation amened.

So ... Where are the cries over a "collision of church and state" now? Will First AME Church be tagged as "an ugly old political attack dog," too? (I hope it won't. I'm just asking.)

In a November 8, 2005, article, the Times reported that a "public relations and political consultant" from First AME Church "tells candidates they can worship at First AME but cannot speak from the pulpit about their candidacy." Hmmm. Is that so? Judging from Obama's speech, it looks like someone broke the rules. Who was it?

(By the way, this article from ABC7 in Los Angeles also reported, "[Obama] told parishioners that he would need their support in his campaign for the presidency." ... View images from the event at ViewImages.com.)

On Monday (4/30/07), the Catholic League weighed in on the episode with a statement. It hit the nail on the head with this (emphasis mine):

[Sunday], Obama blasted the Bush administration’s handling on the war in Iraq while preaching at a Christian church. Now imagine a pro-life Republican candidate speaking at a Catholic Church denouncing the Democrats for supporting partial-birth abortions. And imagine the reaction he would receive if there were a color photo of him on the front page of the New York Times speaking at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The double standard is nauseous, and it smacks of religious and racial prejudice.”

Are we missing something here? Double standard? Anyone?

Can I file this under, "What if a Republican Had Done It?"

No "dissin' on the Messiah" here!

The political party of slaver

The political party of slavery continues to oppress it's victims and the liberal, white press plays right along. This charade is going to end some day: the sooner the better. Amen.

This isn't the first time Dem

This isn't the first time Demoncrats visit churches and no one raises an eyebrow. There is indeed a double standard.

The Republicans are ALWAYS involved in scandal and the Demoncrats are always "squeaky-clean", the MSM said so!

Now you've done it. Saying &q

Now you've done it. Saying "clean" in a blog about Obama.

A church is in serious error

A church is in serious error when it brings in a radical pro-abortionist and prays for his election.

There is a double standard and we should either see the church prosecuted (to lose tax exampt status) or strip the law so anyone can politic to an assembly.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

Over the last several months

Over the last several months has any newspaper written a word about Obama's caucasian heritage or spoke about his mother?

And where is Barry Lynn...t

And where is Barry Lynn...the President of Americans United for Separation of Church and State? Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot, that only means separation of Church and Republicans.

During the 06 election cycle, a pastor in DC, sermonizing for Ben Cardin talked about the "Jesuscrats" and the "Barabblicans" to distinguish the good guys. One guy in the congregation actually said to the Washington Times "The pastor brought the point home for those of us who are on the fence."

We need a new template: WIARHDI? What if a Republican Had Done It? Maybe we could just call the whole thing SOTOF....Shoe on the Other Foot...

Motherbelt, Thanks for

Motherbelt, Thanks for the complement on my tag line. I was raised by my Grandfather who landed on the beaches of Normandy. His time in the war was just like the Band of Brothers; he ended up in a German villa in Austria, by a lake. He did not talk about the bad things too much. His friend was killed right next to him. How upset he got when he told me about a young German soldier he killed that was about my age (17) at the time. Mostly about how cold it was. He was so humble that when he was invited to the launching of the USS Normandy. He asked me, why would they invite me? How lucky was I to be raised by such a man? So every time I think about that speech, I think about my Grandfather (Dad).
I agree I would love to see that speech every day. Ronald Regan will be missed. I drove all the way from the New York area (where I was working at the time) to pay my respects. When someone asked me why, I told him or her because it was the right thing to do. Good parenting.

Interesting...

Another piece of left-coast, bleeding-heart, 'do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do' hypocrisy! They vilify conservatives when evangelical leaders throw their support behind their candidates but it's OK for them to not only campaign in churches but get those congregations to pray they'll be elected?

Never dance on an empty stomach unless it's a liberal.

OBAMA

LA Times columnist said Obama is the "Magic Negro".  I guess Obama is just working that old black magic again.  He can campaign in a church and the media is silent .  I agree Dave, how is it that Democrates take their campaigns to chuches on a regular basis yet the media is silent.  The pastors can encourage their flock to support a particular candidate and the media is silent.  But if a Republican were to be in your face to this level the media would cook them.  How do churches keep their tax-exempt status that take part in these actions and we all know it goes on.

Actually

I likely agree with about everything that has been said regarding this subject.

Having said that, we probably ought to let this one go. My church of about 3,000 members is probably about 95% Republicans. We are very careful about presenting anything that could be directly labeled as Republican.

What we do although, around any elections, is to encourage people to vote and to vote for those that we feel espouse our Conservative, Christian values. It is a no-brainer. 99% of the time, or more, that would be a Republican.

Christians are only secure in the protection of Conservatism. What the liberals, democrats, socialists, communists and the main stream media (excuse my reduncancy) PROFESS to embody, is only truly embodied in Christianity: Love, Forgiveness, Redemption, Charity, Brotherhood, Fellowship, Guidance, Acceptance of ALL Peoples, Hate for the sin but Love of the Sinner. And all of this is based uopn Confession of Sins, Repentance, Sanctification and Glorification. Faith is the basis with acceptance of the limited reasoning power of mankind.

Let them go. We can only win in this arena.

No one on the left is remotel

No one on the left is remotely interested in "separation of church and state" As usual, what they say and what they mean are 2 different things. By espousing "separation of church and state"  they actually mean "No tenets of the Christian faith may be referred to, mentioned, publicly displayed, or talked about".  Other "faiths" are not so scary to them, (therefore acceptable) not even the ones that are teaching and encouraging the murder of non-participants. Liberals especially hate the verse from Ecclesiastes 10:2 that says: "A wise man's heart inclines him to the right, but the heart of a FOOL inclines him to the left." (That explains a lot, don't you think?) The first place a campaigning DimRat visits when he goes to a major city is the biggest "black church"  in the area, and the pulpit is turned over to them. I saw a picture of John Kerry, Jesse Jackass, and Rev. Sharpton "praying" together in '04. I had to laugh. I would walk out if any candidate was campaigning in my church.

"Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end"

The left

"No one on the left is remotely interested in "sepation of church and state"." Right on, Dad. Those on the left aren't intelligent enough to understand the concept. Moreover, they don't care. Ignorance is bliss for all liberal haters.

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

So the Bible addresses mode

So the Bible addresses modern-day political affiliations? Wow, that IS a great book.
