Appearing on NBC’s Late Night on Monday – aired early Tuesday morning – Today co-host Matt Lauer assessed the state of the Republican presidential race: “Donald Trump is getting all the attention right now on the Republican side....This guy is great. He's a showman. He’s got a lot of P.T. Barnum in him and he knows how to promote things....it's hard for the other candidates to get any attention whatsoever, because Donald is, I think some would say, sucking the oxygen out of the room.”
Savannah Guthrie
In an interview with Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus on Monday’s NBC Today, co-host Savannah Guthrie predicted “long-term damage” for Republicans and a “free pass” for Hillary Clinton.
On Friday’s NBC Today, co-host Savannah Guthrie touted Donald Trump leading in recent polls as a problem for the 2016 Republican field: “He is having a bigger impact than a lot of people expected and that is leading to a growing war of words between the real estate mogul and his political rivals.”
At the top of Thursday’s NBC Today, co-host Savannah Guthrie hailed President Obama’s Wednesday press conference: “Unfiltered. President Obama launches a vigorous defense of his controversial deal with Iran.” Introducing a report on the topics minutes later, Guthrie proclaimed: “...a news conference some are calling unplugged. During a more than hour-long session with the reporters, the President was as emotional as we’ve seen him...”
Citing Obama administration talking points word for word on Wednesday’s Today, co-hosts Willie Geist and Savannah Guthrie grilled Republican Senator and presidential candidate Lindsey Graham on GOP opposition to the Iran nuclear deal. Geist, filling in for Matt Lauer, began: “Secretary Kerry...said yesterday opponents of this deal have proposed no viable alternative....What makes you think that a President Lindsey Graham would have any more luck than President Obama with Iran?”
During live breaking news coverage of President Obama announcing a nuclear arms agreement with Iran Tuesday morning, all three broadcast networks labeled the deal “historic” and cheered the development as a “major victory” for the commander in chief, who made the deal a “top diplomatic priority.”
As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, Thursday’s NBC Today devoted a minute-long segment to discussing newly-released Hillary Clinton e-mails. However, rather than focus on the former Secretary of State seeking advice from political hatchet man Sidney Blumenthal or top Obama administration officials knowing she was using private e-mail, the morning show instead speculated on Clinton’s reference to “Santa” in a couple messages.
In an interview with Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz on Monday’s NBC Today, co-host Savannah Guthrie grilled the Texas Senator on his opposition to the Supreme Court’s gay marriage ruling, equating his stance with being against interracial marriage: “...one thing you also said was that you would support a Texas state clerk who refused to issue a license to a gay couple on religious grounds. Let me ask you this, if a state clerk refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple, would you agree with that, too?”
On Friday morning, all three of the major broadcast networks surprisingly covered the latest in the Hillary Clinton e-mail scandal as 15 e-mails between Clinton and former confidante Sidney Blumenthal were discovered missing from her time at the State Department. Despite the over five and half minutes of coverage, CBS and NBC expressed concern that “the revelation” could create “a new distraction” for Clinton’s presidential campaign.

On June 26, following the Supreme Court’s decision to grant a constitutional right to marry for gay couples, NBC News broke in to cheer on the ruling. Pete Williams labeled it a historic ruling and fought back tears while reporting the 5-4 decision to Savannah Guthrie.
In an interview with National Security Advisor Susan Rice aired on Friday’s NBC Today, co-host Savannah Guthrie challenged the White House effort to reach a nuclear deal with Iran: “Anyone watching this closely, they all say basically the same thing – that the optics are that the administration wants this deal too much.”
NBC's Savannah Guthrie on Friday echoed Barack Obama's call for more gun control in the wake of the Charleston shooting. The Today host talked to South Carolina's Governor Nikki Haley and highlighted the President "venting" about gun violence. Guthrie quizzed, "I know you are a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Is there anything about this situation that makes you think, okay, should we rethink? Is it time for some kind of change?"
