Cradle Catholic Chris Matthews spent the first segment of his September 23 Hardball program effusively praising Pope Francis, particularly for raising immigration and climate change in his brief remarks at a welcome ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House. But in a later segment, Matthews and guests Joan Walsh and Sister Simone Campbell lamented how even the liberal-leaning Francis is closed to the idea of women serving as priests in the Catholic Church.

At one point, Matthews offered up his theory for why the opposition was so long-standing, and it boiled down to, wait for it, a celibate Catholic clergy.

Joining Brian Williams for his second day back anchoring MSNBC’s coverage of Pope Francis’s visit to the United States on Wednesday afternoon, Catholic and Hardball host Chris Matthews blasted Francis’s predecessor Pope Benedict XVI for being “so fragile and removed” and possessing a “weakness” and “coldness” that Francis does not have. The disgraced former NBC Nightly News anchor gushed over Matthews’s “patriotism” for the U.S. that’s “matched only by his exuberance.”

During an appearance on Monday’s Hardball, Washington Post columnist and MSNBC contributor Eugene Robinson took great joy in tying Donald Trump’s views about President Obama’s religious beliefs to the entire Republican Party: “if you have an irrational hatred of President Obama and you think he’s an illegal immigrant or whatever, if you are an Islamophobe...the Republican Party makes a home for you.”

It is a devastating, indisputable fact of history -- George W. Bush was president when jihadists murdered 3,000 people in the United States on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

For the liberals who loathed Bush during the 2000 campaign, and who then succumbed during the Florida recount to a chronic condition later diagnosed as Bush Derangement Syndrome, Bush's presence at the helm that horrific day is not damning enough. They vilify him by embellishing the truth of what came before it.

Last night on Hardball, MSNBC host Chris Matthews insisted, "I'm not a hater" even though there are "a couple that really get to me though," such as Dick Cheney.

Carly Fiorina is "either a liar, or she's delusional" regarding the Planned Parenthood sting videos, Salon editor-at-large Joan Walsh snarled on tonight's edition of Hardball.

An unhappy Chris Matthews on Wednesday slammed Marco Rubio’s foreign policy comments at the Republican debate, suggesting that the Senator was trying to “prove himself the strongest, best informed, most articulate hawk. He clearly made Sheldon Adelson happy tonight.” Later, the Hardball host again singled out the long-time supporter of Israel, saying, in effect, that Rubio was sucking up to “the darling of the hawks, Sheldon Adelson and every other Daddy Warbucks out there.”

In the late hours of Wednesday night after the Republican debate, MSNBC’s Hardball host Chris Matthews was in his element as he whined about the 2016 GOP candidates being “very ideological tonight” and targeted the Cuban-American heritage of Senators Marco Rubio (Fl.) and Ted Cruz (Tex.) for thinking that “they still are fighting a Cold War” and “treat[ing] Obama like he’s Castro.”

A half hour prior to Wednesday's Republican presidential debate on CNN, Chris Matthews over on MSNBC's Hardball tag-teamed with California Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer to trash Republican candidate Carly Fiorina, who unsuccessfully challenged Boxer in a 2010 Senate race. "Senator, I'm a big fan of yours," Matthews began, "So tell me what you think about tonight. I mean, you beat her, and here she is back going for president. Doesn't make sense. Your thoughts?"

In an exchange with former Rep. J.C. Watts (R-Okla.) on Wednesday night's Hardball prior to the CNN debate, host Chris Matthews blasted the Republican Party writ large for not rebuking Donald Trump several years ago when he publicly questioned whether President Obama was constitutionally eligible for the office.

Here's a pro-tip for Chris Matthews. If you're going to blow a dog whistle on your national program about how a neo-conservative Jewish guy is a political puppet master, you might want to not add insult to injury by doing so as Jews the world 'round celebrate the new year.

On Monday’s Hardball, Stephanie Schriock, president of the pro-choice organization EMILY’s List, lamented that Hillary Clinton’s ongoing problems with her use of a private e-mail server have dominated the coverage of her campaign. The outspoken supporter of Clinton complained that the e-mails were “the only story that has gotten any significant coverage about Hillary Clinton for the last three months, despite the fact that she has rolled out some incredible policies.”
