Soon after President Barack Obama announced on Tuesday morning that the government of Iran signed a nuclear arms treaty with the United States and a coalition of allies, Richard Engel -- NBC's chief foreign correspondent – stated on MSNBC's Morning Joe program that the deal was “a gamble” for the U.S. that “very possibly” could lead to a new arms buildup in the Middle East.

MSNBC released two new "Lean Forward" ads last week, the latest examples of the network's echo chamber thinking. In the spots, Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow, respectively, cheered the Supreme Court's liberal decisions from the last term. The commercials brand the network as the official cheerleader of liberal causes. In one, Matthews lauded, "This is, let's joyously agree, a time of triumph. The Supreme Court has validated the President's Affordable Care Act... and it's a time for equality of marriage for gay and lesbian people."

Back in the 2012 Republican presidential primary race, Chris Matthews slammed former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) as a "theocrat" and a "Cro-Magnon" man. On tonight's Hardball program, however, the MSNBC host was actually cordial and low-key. In fact, at no point did he rudely interrupt Santorum mid-sentence or badger his guest by trying to talk him into a corner with a gotcha question.
That said, as you can see from the agenda of questions transcribed below, Matthews by no means abandoned his liberal conventional wisdom nor his left-wing bias. What's more, for his part, Santorum gently but firmly pushed back against some of Matthew's talking points about immigration and the liberal media's fascination with the Confederate flag issue

During a Wednesday Hardball discussion with former Democratic senator and presidential candidate Gary Hart, Matthews asked about “the ideological direction of the party right now” and added that Bernie Sanders is bringing a kind of 1960s message to Democratic politics. The Hardball host then moved on to discuss Hillary Clinton, making a very dubious observation: “Hillary Clinton [is] more of a conservative in a sense of more of a traditional politician from the center, center.”

Of all the pundits out there that could make this comparison, it seems somewhat fitting and all the more amusing that on Wednesday’s Hardball, host Chris Matthews credited 2016 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s success in polls to the idea that he’s a “comic book hero” and “Sinatra kinda guy” that connects with Republican primary voters. At the top of his MSNBC show, Matthews wondered if “there’s an outside chance” that “this comic book hero could actually take off” seeing as how he “talks to the Republican gut on ISIS, on illegal immigrants, on Obama, and politicians period.”
