NewsBusters is, of course, a site dedicated to exposing liberal bias in the press. But, once in a while the liberal press gets something right and this is one of those cases. On Spetember 20, Newsweek hosted an article by FactCheck.org that exposed the outright lies contained in the claims Barack Obama made against John McCain's record on Social Security in order to scare as many elder citizens as he can. Obama may have expected every Old Media outlet out there to cover for him, but Newsweek didn't oblige this time. So, I thought I'd highlight this piece and give Newsweek the thumbs up for hosting the FactCheck.org article.
Over the weekend, Barack Obama appeared in the battleground state of Florida and made to scare citizens over McCain's votes on Social Security. Obama claimed that McCain voted for a plan that would have seen the Social Security benefits of "elderly women" at risk in the stock market during the recent wildly fluctuating market. Telling his audience, "if my opponent had his way, the millions of Floridians who rely on it would've had their Social Security tied up in the stock market this week," Obama tried to claim that the elderly would have lost their money because of John McCain. FactCheck.org called these claims "not true."
That's not true. The plan proposed by President Bush and supported by McCain in 2005 would not have allowed anyone born before 1950 to invest any part of their Social Security taxes in private accounts. All current retirees would be covered by the same benefits they are now.
In other words, Obama's attempt to scare old women that their benefits would have been at risk if McCain had his way is an outright lie. The truth is, McCain voted for a plan that would have allowed anyone under the age of 58 to opt to have their benefits invested in the stock market, but only if they wanted them to be invested.
As FactCheck.org notes on September 19, they explained an Obama lie that held that McCain would have cut Social Security benefits by 50%. In this one they also correct the lies Obama told on the 20th.
FactCheck.org notes Obama's words in Daytona Beach, Florida:
And I'll protect Social Security, while John McCain wants to privatize it. Without Social Security half of elderly women would be living in poverty - half. But if my opponent had his way, the millions of Floridians who rely on it would've had their Social Security tied up in the stock market this week. Millions would've watched as the market tumbled and their nest egg disappeared before their eyes. Millions of families would've been scrambling to figure out how to give their mothers and fathers, their grandmothers and grandfathers, the secure retirement that every American deserves. So I know Senator McCain is talking about a "casino culture" on Wall Street - but the fact is, he's the one who wants to gamble with your life savings.
But the truth is something else entirely.
That's untrue. All current retirees would be covered by exactly the same Social Security benefits they are now under what the Obama campaign likes to call the "Bush-McCain privatization plan," which Bush pushed for unsuccessfully in 2005.
Is this the way Obama is making his "new era" in politics by using lies to scare old people?
FactCheck.org's Newsweek piece goes on to clear up exactly what it was that the Bush plan that McCain supported would have done and none of it put the benefits of "elderly women" at risk in any way whatever.
In any case, kudos to Newsweek once again for hosting the truth. But one wonders if the rest of the Old Media will follow this example and highlight Barack Obama's blatant lies on the campaign trail?

September 21, 2008 - 09:20 ET by JoelCTThere's more, too. If this "privatization plan" had been enacted in 2003, the DOW is still up over 200 points from then.
Oh, and their nest egg would not have disappeared before their eyes. The massive gains they had earned over the last five years wouldn't be as massive, but the nest egg would still be there.
Oh, and the DOW only lost 38 points this week. It wasn't a wipeout.
Oh, and the DOW is up about 1,000 points since September 10, 2001.
Idiot liar.
Not only that, let's think
September 21, 2008 - 10:07 ET by dscottNot only that, let's think about what Obama implied IF SS was privatized. Obama's incompetent idea is that a person who is RETIRED would have their nest egg fully vested in stocks! Anyone who would have advised a retired person to do so would have immediately lost their securities license. That's how grossly incompetent such an idea is. Only people SAVING for retirement would have a significant proportion of their investments in a STOCK INDEX FUND, thus spreading their risk, it's called diversification. The closer you get to your retirement date, the greater proportion you should have in CDs and Bond (high grade).
So in order to be in the situation Obama claims, you would have to be a total idiot and grossly misled. Hmmmm, why does that sound like Projection on Obama's/Dems part to me???

September 21, 2008 - 09:27 ET by ThisnThatYou ask: "But one wonders if the rest of the Old Media will follow this example and highlight Barack Obama's blatant lies on the campaign trail?"
Here's the answer, from today's Boston Globe -- no. They simply reported on what Obama said. It fits the Globe's template, so no need to search for actual facts from the Globe. Oh -- except for the Headline: In Fla., Obama hits McCain on Social Security. And, to point out that McCain "has been vague on what he would do to strengthen the Social Security system". And to interpret Obama's words for him by stating: "Senator Barack Obama delivered a warning to Florida voters yesterday". But other than that, the Globe is as non-partisan as it could possibly be, and only reports the truth to us peasants.

September 21, 2008 - 10:25 ET by motherbeltThat's true, TnT, but they did actually get a quote from McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds, who blew it, bigtime.
Instead of just using the boilerplate "scare tactics" charge and reiterating McCain's "commitment" to preserving Social Security, he should have pointed out how Obama's charge was inaccurate and dishonest.
That's generally the problem with Republicans...instead of hitting back hard, they do a version of "I'm a good guy too! I do SO want to save SS!!"

Factcheck.org is really "Annenburg Factcheck.org"
September 21, 2008 - 09:40 ET by geoksterBefore we go getting all ga-ga about this site's objectivity because they actually got one right for our team, we must remember that the Annenburg Foundation which owns it is also the same one that gave $49 million dollars to William Ayers to fund the "Chicago Annenburg Challenge" (CAC), with the goal of reforming Chicago's schools.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annenberg_Foundation
Ayer's and his wife were founders of the notorious Weather Underground, probably the most radical and violent anti-Viet Nam war group, which was avowedly communistic. She lovingly praised the Manson family slaughter of a pregnant Sharon Tate, among others, thusly:
"Dig it! First they killed those pigs and then they put a fork in their bellies. Wild!"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernardine_Dohrn
Now this lovely piece of work was employed at a small leftwing law firm in Chicago in the early 1990's, where there was also a young, inexperienced junior associate named Barrack Obama. Ayers then personally picked Obama to head the CAC, a very controversial choice, since he passed over two former university presidents on the group's board to appoint this young lawyer.
Thus the legend of The One was born.
This group under Obama and Ayers managed to p*ss away $110 million dollars, much of it to cronies of Ayers, before the CAC was declared an utter failure, with absolutely no positive impact on the Chicago schools.
Does anyone really know that Annenburg FactCheck.org is unbiased? I think that until we know for sure, we always make sure to call it "Annenburg FactCheck", just in case we find out differently, especially since this now seems to be a favorite "source" for the media.
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. But a few big obvious sops to the right is also a great cover for potentially a lot of disingenuous concerning the left.

I wonder what their feelings
September 21, 2008 - 10:16 ET by dscottI wonder what their feelings are toward Obama since he helped waste at least $50 million of their money in Chicago school system? Embarrassment or Passive-Aggressive resentment? If they were embarrassed they would say nothing and do nothing so as not to draw attention to their poor judgement in trusting Obama to make choices for them. On the other hand, a passive-aggressive would use this opportunity to undermine Obama to get revenge in a manner that is commensurate to their loss. My vote is the latter. This little expose' cost Obama dearly.

September 21, 2008 - 11:15 ET by Gary HallMy gut observation tells me that they are doing a bit better this year, than in the past. Does that suggest that the Obama side, has gone so far overboard that it is difficult to ignore it?
Also, I'd note that in past years, the story line presented by Obama here - that gross misrepresentation of what President Bush's actual SS reform proposals entailed - is exactly what past Democratic candidates, sitting Democrat politicians, AARP, numerous liberal orgs, and our MSM presented to the voting public time and time again. This view was so solidly presented, and accepted as a mantra by the left, that any chance of SS reform was lost.
Even my dear mother, who had trusted President Bush to the core, found herself unable to trust my rebuttals to her sudden awakening that Bush was going to privatize here SS while reducing her benefits and doing away with her medicare. She repeatedly said to me, "What, can't you read? Don't you watch the news?" Tens of millions of seniors believe this - as does most of the far left voting block.
This represents the the success story of the MSM's rad leftist and dishonest agenda. Even Obama believed it. This documents the need for WTH's blog post today. (;~> gary
Without Social
September 21, 2008 - 10:20 ET by dmntd1And I fail to see how those half AREN'T living in poverty WITH Social Security!!!
Now, I'm not retired, but my mom is. Were it not for fastidious (sp?) savings, her pension AND social security add up to a whopping $1500 per month. That's reasonable for her, as her savings allowed her to buy her car outright, her house is paid for, and she's essentially debt free. She's got great health insurance from my late father's employer, too.
Take a 'typical old person' though, and you'd see that $1100 eaten half-up by rent. Now, I don't think it's the government's job to provide for the old, other than the fact that they've made it their job, and promised the aid. As such, many elderly have let their savings slide, assuming they ever had any.
PS. My mom still works part time. She's got this killer addiction to quilting, so works one day a week at a quilt store to pay for fabric. I can't complain, I'm the recipient of three of her quilts *grin*

Liar
September 21, 2008 - 10:57 ET by iveseenitallBarry is a cheap Chicago political thug. He's a liar. He is a Socialist/Communist. He's backed by crimminals, terrorists, and George Soros, an avowd hater of America. He's not smart; he's rather dull, in fact. His upbringing evinces that he and his wife have been indoctrinated in an ultra left-wing ideology. The recipients of Affirmative Action, they show no gratitude, but rather thumb their ugly noses at the country which has given them so much. His mother was not a "hippie", as O'Rielly put it. She was a commie. His friends and associates demonstrate a vile hatred of America, including having actually bombed at least one American government building. The American press has refused to meet its responsibility concerning vetting the guy. They actually act as his surrogates. He has no experience and no credentials for the presidency. At best, he will raise taxes, cower from the defense of the nation, and support the welfare state. At worst, he is an enemy of the American people. So why should any American vote for this man-child? It will come to no good. Sad.

Patriot
September 21, 2008 - 11:36 ET by iveseenitallBarry's opponent, John McCain, sufferred mightily in the service of his country. He's a patriot. He's not perfect, who is? But contrasted with Barry Obama, he's a saint. He has said that he does not want to raise taxes and he wants to fight the enemies who want us wiped from the face of the earth. He is experienced in a government that he admits is corrupt and in need of real change. And he knows what rocks to look under. Unlike Barry, he comes from an America-loving military family whose members have served the nation with honor. He is not associated with a corrupt inner-city political machine. Though many on one side or the other will disagree with him, even dislike him for it, he tries to make compromises for the good of all as he see it. Overall, he can be trusted while Obama cannot be trusted. As we see here with Social Securtiy,Obama is an outright liar who will twist anything in order to be elected. Moreover, America does not know who Barry Obama really is or who are his puppet masters. Obama could be a grave danger to the nation. Can we take the chance? I don't think so.

September 21, 2008 - 11:08 ET by KevpotObama is a kneejerk reactionary. The market rebounded big-time at the end of the week, finishing only 40 points down from the previous week. That could hardly be interpreted as 'wiping out' investors accounts.

This just confirms the fact
September 21, 2008 - 11:40 ET by SmartypantsThis just confirms the fact that Dems rely on empty emotional appeals for votes. There is no basis to Obama's claim whatsoever, but I'm sure it plays well to an elderly audience. The Dems are, unfortunately, masters at manipulating specific groups for their own political cause.
Bush's plan provided for citizens an OPTION to invest only a portion of their SS funds in private accounts. Dems like to look at the world as if there is no history and no tomorrow (at least when it suits their interests). So the stock market has been shaky lately; it's still up since 2001 and will undoubtedly provide a better return over the long haul than the 2% given by SS (assuming it doesn't go broke). This manipulation is why I became turned off with Democrats decades ago. Obama's strategy is nothing new.

Perhaps they see the eroding of free speech under Premier and Party Chairman Nikita Obama coming down the pike? Maybe they realize that their own fortunes will be at risk with this newcommer. September 22, 2008 - 14:01 ET by dscottObama is still sticking with his characterization of McCain's plan: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/22/social.security.candidates/index.html?iref=topnews This goes to prove Democrats are the Party of the Status Quo not the Party of Change. The truth be told, Democrats are terrified of real change such as what McCain advocates. These are the same people who said nothing was wrong with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac when reform was advocated by W and McCain back in 2003 and 2004. Listen to the Dems again and we will be playing crisis management all over again come 2017, less than 9 years, tick, tick, tick. Time is running out and this should have been done years ago when Bush brought it up, every year we wait the worse the situation will get.
