In this corner, Clint Eastwood, Dirty Harry himself. And in that corner, the self appointed guardian of America's black population, Spike Lee. It's shaping up to be a battle royale, folks, with Lee rabbit punching the aging action star while Eastwood uses his smarts and experience to deliver a knock out blow.
In round one, Lee came out swinging at Director Clint Eastwood's WWII films, "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima," claiming that Eastwood "erased the role of black GIs from history." Lee tried on his self-righteous air of moral certitude and labeled Eastwood a racist. "Many black veterans who fought in Iwo Jima were hurt that there was no representation of them in both of those films," Lee said in an interview in Rome last year.
But not to fear for Eastwood losing the bout, as he is about to show us all that Spike Lee doesn't have what it takes to go toe to toe with a master.
Round two began as the blow fell upon Eastwood in an interview with Focus magazine. Why was Eastwood such a racist, they wondered? Eastwood, momentarily rocked on his heels, came back with a knock out blow showing the world that, aging or not, he was still faster and smarter than the bespeckled, racemongering Lee.
"Does he know anything about American history?" Eastwood told Focus when asked about Lee's criticism. "The U.S. military was segregated til the Korean War, and the blacks in World War Two were totally segregated. The only black battalion on Iwo Jima was a small munitions supply unit that came to the beach.
"The story was about the men who raised the flag and we can't make them black if they were not there. So tell him: Why don't you go back and study your history and stop mouthing off!"
Looks like Lee is on the ropes and being shown for the palooka he really is. The decision goes to Eastwood for showing us all that Spike Lee has no idea what he is talking about. Not that anyone suspected otherwise, mind you.
Dontcha just hate all this actor on actor violence?

May 25, 2008 - 11:11 ET by BDWHat Spike Lee doesn't either understand or wish to understand is Scale.
During the Battle of Iwo Jima, as far as I can tell approximately 900 black Marines were on island. Compare this to 26,000 Marene Corps casulties including 6,800 deaths. The black Marines were in a single segregated unit and not scattered throughout the force.
Therefore, if one were to depict hisotry in scale, the battle would be almost universally white. Just history and logic interfering with another race hustler.
I remember back in 2001, the race hustlers also complaiend because there was only one black soldier depicted as a Ranger during the smash "Blackhawk Down." Much wailing and gnashing of teeth, which largely died down when the demographics came out that showed the Ranger Company involved only had one or two soldiers at the time of the battle of Mogadishu.
But historical truth comes up short when measured against Political correctness in Spike Lee's mind.

May 25, 2008 - 08:20 ET by political mavenDoctors, scientists, computer geeks are portrayed as blacks or women, or black women. The black guy is the insightful one & the white men are idiots.
In commercials the black has to be the well balanced one or the banker giving sagely advice to the stupid white guy.
So, Clinton was accurate...how dare he! Let Spike Lee complain about the racism of the NBA!
What an idiot, he puts on glasses & thinks he's a genius.
Pure jealousy is all
May 25, 2008 - 08:36 ET by badger.Bow wow, I mean Spike is just envious of Clint's success is all. Clint is right on target with Spike's history lesson. Hey Spike, didn't all those schools you went to teach you any history? That college education doesn't mean a thing, right? Ever hear of the Jackie Robinson Story, surely you heard of that movie in NY Film School of Arts, or black history at Morehouse College? Let me guess you were sleeping in class.
Comparing Clint to Shelton is like comparing an elephant to a mouse. I don't think Spike has ever made the 100 mil. movie mark at the box office. A Clint movie is money in the bank, and Hollywood knows it. Clint has plenty of hit movies to his credit, and a shelf full of awards. What does Spike have?, an Emmy, oh boy, a shoebox full. Spike demands the awards be given to him like Kenye West, doesn't want to earn them by creating a good movie, like "Million Dollar Baby." I watched for the first time last weekend, great movie. Clint Eastwwod might not be a great actor, going on 78 yoa, but, he sure knows how to direct and produce a good blockbuster movie, unlike Mr. Lowbrow Spike dog.
Spike is as good a director as he is an actor. I personally cannot name one film I would place in my DVD collection, not a one. Spike has about as much business making a movie a Jethro Bodine. This guy absolutely stinks at acting/directing/producing/writing movies. I wouldn't take one of his movies if you gave it to me free of charge. I wouldn't use it for a doorstop/gun practice at a skeet shoot.
Most of Spike's movies have bigoted/racist content, context, and undertones. "White Men Can't Jump", "Bamboozled", "Malcolm X", "40 Acres and a Mule" production company, come on. I could go on and on with this guy. Spike was all over Senator Lott, insinuating he had ties with the KKK, nothing about Senator Byrd.
People like Spike, Kenye West, Ice-T, Flavor Flav, always talking trash about all American patriots like Clint Eastwood, Elvis Presley, John Wayne. I say the heck with these idiots, you don't mean nothing to me. 50 years from now, millions of people will still know the names of Clint, Elvis, and the Duke. Unlike Spike, T, Flav, Kenye.
Ask yourself this question. Have you ever heard Clint say something bigoted/controversial/racist about anyone? Now ask yourself the same question about Spike and friends. Opie, let Clint use the names "Buckwheat or "Stymie" in one of his flicks, and see what happens. "White Men Can't Jump." How about if a white man names his movie title say, Black Men Can't Swim or Black Men Can't Drive, (NASCAR) all hell would break out, and people know it. And no, I am not white.
As you can probably tell by my rant thus far, I can't stand this dog. Spike Lee is a real/true definition of a racist, with a Big chip on his shoulder. Behold, a beam in your own eye Shelton. I could rant all day about this bigoted/racist, ferret face/weasel looking rat.

May 25, 2008 - 10:38 ET by NL207Clint has one on me. I did not think that a single black fought on Iwo Jima. The munitions battalion was one I did not think of. They probably did not engage in any combat, but their ammo delivery service was as valuable to the success of the assault as anyone else's contributions on the Island.
Spike Lee is a colossal ignoramus.
They probably couldn't shoot back
May 25, 2008 - 12:57 ET by sarcasmoBut I suspect these segregated black guys got "engaged" quite frequently. The enemy, after all, had the high ground. I wonder if Eastwood deliberately chose not to show that aspect of the Iwo Jima fight in an attempt to avoid this very race-controversy? If so, that would be interesting. I'm not sure Spike Lee understands the extent many white people go to in order to avoid these controversial issues.
But obviously, I think we have other, more modern, racial issues to consider even as the news media focuses obsessively on Spike's ancient racial irrelevancies, while dutifully ignoring a certain 400lb gorilla I keep telling them is in the room...

May 26, 2008 - 00:38 ET by NL207These blacks on Iwo were unloading munitions. These are things that have a habit of exploding when shot at. They are also something not unloaded en-masse into places the enemy can shoot. Munitions are only handled by supply battalions in rear areas. You can bet the black munitions battalion was not exposed to combat for this very reason.
The enemy had the high ground
May 26, 2008 - 01:05 ET by sarcasmoAnd many machineguns or larger on that high ground. There's no way the black munitions guys would have been safe anywhere on that island for the first few days at least, because there wasn't any "rear area" unless you count the coral reefs (nasty) or US Navy landing craft (targets). They were moving around and exposed in order to deliver their ammunition, so I say the Japanese probably shot at them quite a bit. That's exposure to combat, at least by my definition.

May 25, 2008 - 23:47 ET by JerSpielberg was likewise criticized for the lack of black representation in Saving Private Ryan. That and other instances in which demands are made to essentially fictionalize history for the sake of political correctness and racial sensitivity are tiresome and absurd.
As BD pointed out, however, there were a significant number of blacks on Iwo, albeit in a segregated munitions unit. But, each and every Marine on that island was in harm's way, and I believe that at least a few blacks would have been directly engaged in combat. [That is my opinion...I haven't researched the issue.] As such, if Eastwood could have--even very briefly--depicted this [while maintaining historical and plot integrity], it probably would have been wise--if for no other reason than to avoid this type of controversy. However, it should never be done simply to placate racial card sharks like Spike Lee.

Hey, I know. FDR as portrayed by Star Trek's Sulu, George Takei.
Maybe we can make Malcolm X a white guy from New Jersey?
Why not have King Arthur as a Pacific Islander?
Hey, General Lee as a black guy. THAT would be cool and fair and stuff. Heck, let's make the entire lot of the Founding Fathers comprised of Indians, blacks and Mexicans??

May 26, 2008 - 10:25 ET by NL207"there were a significant number of blacks on Iwo"
According to who? Certainly not the military. According to the Marine Corps, the black marine units assigned to Iwo Jima were : 8th Marine Ammunition Company and the 33d, 34th, and 36th Marine Depot Companies, all part of the V Amphibious Corps' support tail. That's 4 companies. A Company at full strength is about 200 men. It's quite likely no more than 800 blacks served on Iwo Jima. Their casualties amounted to some 2 killed and 9 wounded. One of their white officers was also killed.
Total US casualties on Iwo Jima were some 8,720 killed outright, died later of wounds or went missing. Another 19,189 were wounded. 4th Marine Division, about whom Eastwood made "Flags of Our Fathers", suffered 9,098 missing, killed and wounded. A full strength Marine Division had about 18,000 men then.
"Significant" was my term, NL.
May 26, 2008 - 19:49 ET by Jer"Significant" was my term, NL. I used it after noting BD's comment that about 900 blacks served on Iwo. Just curious...where would your line of demarcation lie between "significant" and "insignificant" in this case? What adjective would you find more appropriate? I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks for the additional details you provided about the battle.

May 26, 2008 - 11:39 ET by BDFlags of our Fathers is the story of the unit that raised the US Flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. THat particular unit did not have African Americans in it.
THerefore, to willy nilly put an African American contingent in the movie, would have been to solely kowtow to the race hustlers.
In Spike Lees upcoming movie about the African American "Buffalo Soldiers" of the Tenth Cavalry, I wonder if he will also show participation of the Nisei 442nd RCT made up of Japanese Americans. Or perhaps he will show heavy participation by the Eskimo Scouts of the Alaska National Guard. Or how about the Heavily Norwegian american 164th Infantry Regiment?
If not, why not? Historical accuracy seems to not play a key role in Sike Lees movie making, why NOT?

May 26, 2008 - 03:14 ET by tracheostomyI read it Jer. It appears to match Eastwood's statement. Now my curiosity is up. Where was this black battalion located, and where was the focus of the film?
One movie covering an event where 100,000 Americans were involved would have a real hard time focusing on less than 2000 black men (at best, only 2% of the total number of Americans involved in the entire battle).
The last paragraph of your link was particularly thought-provoking. Was this last battle on Iwo Jima a mop-up of suicide troops after the island was already confirmed taken?
I don't think WTH was fair either. You were clearly asking for extras, not some PC radical revisionist shakeup.
I myself believe that that Eastwood cannot be fairly labled "racist" by Lee, because a minority was in fact represented in the film. I see someone simply complaining that his personal race wasn't favored in the mix. Quite selfish, IMO.
But then, who pays any attention to the Native Americans?

Somewhat late tp the conversaion as usual but
May 26, 2008 - 12:52 ET by Wilbur747this atricle may answer your question. The black company was the 8th Ammunition Company.
Good first hand account of events leading to to and including the invasion from a black soldiers prospective.
http://www.mpma28.com/page/page/2271596.htm
Since blacks were segregated, this excerpt more or less tromps on Spike Lee's idea of what happened on Iwo.
"On D-Day plus three, climbed down the Cargo Nets into the LST’s ... in minutes we were headed toward Red Beach Two. Others among the Black Marines would be landing just north of us on Yellow Beach One. As we headed toward the beach, I glanced up and pointed my field glasses toward Suribachi, and there she went. They were raising the flag ... God, what a beautiful sight, I thought."
