Hollywood: G.I. Joe no Longer American Soldier But an 'International' Operative?

Photo of Warner Todd Huston.

Outrageously, a new live-action movie based on the G.I. Joe toy line might see Joe's American soldier identity scrubbed to be replaced by membership in an "international force based in Brussels." The news site, IGN Entertainment, a site that reports on the gaming, comics and movie industries, has the scoop on the upcoming live-action G.I. Joe movie that Paramount is launching and it is looking like the G.I. Joe that we all loved, that "real American hero," is going to be replaced with "Action Man," a member of an "international operations team." It appears that the American soldier, a liberator and protector, isn't a good enough role model for the execs at Paramount!

Paramount is even turning Joe's name into an acronym adding insult to injury. Instead of just being the main character's name, it will become G.I.J.O.E., meaning "Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity."

In a follow-up to their confirmation that Stephen Sommers will direct G.I. Joe, Variety offers this new description of the team: "G.I. Joe is now a Brussels-based outfit that stands for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, an international co-ed force of operatives who use hi-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil organization headed by a double-crossing Scottish arms dealer. The property is closer in tone to X-Men and James Bond than a war film."

According to various reports in Variety, Ad Age, and IGN, the producers of G.I. Joe the movie are claiming that marketing will be too difficult on the international market for a movie about a heroic U.S. soldier. So they are thinking of eliminating Joe's connection to the U.S. military.

Deciding whether to make "GI Joe" at all, let alone how to market it, is nettlesome thanks in large measure to an unpopular American president defending an unpopular war: In a July USA Today/Gallup poll, a record high of 62% respondents had called the invasion of Iraq "a mistake." A month later, that view is 57%, more or less where it's been for over a year.

Yet with the announcement that Steven Sommers will direct the movie, though, there is no confirmation that the standard G.I. Joe we all loved as the expression of American heroism will be replaced by the international mercenary man concept. Paramount is refusing to say officially which way they will go, but reports of their vacillation toward an anti-U.S. military point of view are many throughout the industry.

Some rumors claim that the title "G.I. Joe" will even be dropped in the international release to be replaced by "Action Man" (the original name of the Joe series' British soldier) so that the name won't offend anyone outside the USA.

Whatever the case, we have another U.S. based entertainment giant ashamed to be Americans. This is par for the course for Hollywood, sadly. It should be recalled that the last Superman movie dropped the American part of Superman's tag line, "truth, justice, and the American way" because it had American in it, not to mention that every Iraq war movie coming out has an anti-American point of view. So, with that in mind, it is hardly surprising that G.I. Joe is doomed to be denuded of his American identity by a weak-kneed and unpatriotic Hollywood.

United Planet Earth

People with a bit of a memory might remember a Desilu production for Paramount intitiated by a rather nobody at the time called Gene Roddenberry called Star Trek in being the modern Hollywood push for the ending of national states like America in an United Planet Earth.

Everyone can see the postive of a Superman to John Ford propaganda for a united American mindset of good, but somehow the idea of literal forces controlling Hollywood in bankrolling movies with "new identity" films in taking American icons to make them into a basic New World Order patsy is just too much for Americans to deal with "as they are too sophisticated" they think to fall prey to an idea.

For the children here who never grew up in a world where divorce was a stigma, that a pregnant unwed woman was shameful, not honoring God, being a virgin when married was normal and being queer was something most people never heard of and when explained to them they in disbelief said "ish"............those Americans who grew up in that world can tell you it was shocking in someone disgracing the flag, using foul language in public and a kiss was all the sex they ever saw in a movie.

Just look at the above now in people who actually think that way in the above paragraphs are now called crazy, homophobes, a threat to America and hateful.

That is a combined effort from globalists to rot America slowly for a generation until morality disappeared and we have what we have now. The last of it will be international allies like Norwegian jets patrolling America after 9 11, Mexican truckers running over American on the I 35 Mexican interstate into Canada and new heroes for kids to look up to in Brussels...........

Gee Brussels, like so much of that New World Order rot promoted by the International Narco Bankers of international soldiers enforcing international law laid down by a group of communist simps who know how Americans should live their lives.

I will bet Euros I will never dirty my hands with that this movie will have GI Joe going after those most evil of all people, AMERICANS, and murdering them.........oh I mean sanctioning them with mandates from the World Court.

None of this happens by accident no more than John Ford did.

Star Trek may have had a

Star Trek may have had a unified planetary government for Earth, but to argue that the show was somehow a liberal arguement against nation states is a stretch in my opinion.

Earth was the nation state. A nation state that belonged to a Federation. The Federation always fought for its ideals against other nation states that were deemed enemies such as the Klingons and Romulans just to name a few.

Later versions of the show may have been a little slower to pick up the phaser than Kirk, but they were all heavily invested in defending the Federation and their own respective nation states.

Apparently, you don't know

Apparently, you don't know how big a liberal Roddenberry was. Do you know about "IDIC"? Infinite diversity in infinite combinations? Multi-culti bullshit was rampant throughout Star Trek then and today. TV's first interracial kiss: Star Trek. The PRIME DIRECTIVE, a liberal mantra, non-interference: Star Trek. The episode "A Private Little War", was a clearly made to mock Vietnam. All these were Roddenberry's ideas. Hey Star Trek was great sci-fi, but piss poor on the values and morality.

"TV's first interracial

"TV's first interracial kiss: Star Trek. "

The horror! The horror!

Jump to conclusions

Jump to conclusions much???? Did I post that it was wrong??? Schmuck.

Ah, so the kiss wasn't to

Ah, so the kiss wasn't to be included as part of the "Multi-culti bullshit" that you don't like about Star Trek? Schmendrik?

Do you think an interracial

Do you think an interracial kiss on prime time television in the mid-60s was a conservative idea or liberal idea, based on what you know about liberals and conservatives back then?

That doesn't answer my

That doesn't answer my question.

Having a multi-racial crew

Having a multi-racial crew is not multi-cultural. All members of that crew, and all crews to follow it were rather unified in their belief system and the values of Star Fleet.

The Prime Directive applied mostly to pre-warp civilizations and civilizations that didn't belong to the Federation. On several instanes the PD was broken by Picard, Janeway, and Sisko. I don't recall the PD used that much in TOS, and it didn't apply to the NX-01 as Archer's crew was around before the PD and the Federation.

As for IDIC, that was primarily a belief held by the people of another nation state that belonged to the Federation, the Vulcans.

As for the episode you mentioned, I cannot comment on it as I don't recall it.

Live Long and Prosper.

<insert something clever>

Look, if you don't believe

Look, if you don't believe Roddenberry was a lefty, that's fine. I'm not going to argue about it. But:

Having a multi-racial crew is not multi-cultural. All members of that crew, and all crews to follow it were rather unified in their belief system and the values of Star Fleet.

No, it was multi-culti. There was a "quota" of sorts. The bridge personnel had to be from different backgrounds. Read Nichols book for crying out loud. Geez.

The Prime Directive applied mostly to pre-warp civilizations and civilizations that didn't belong to the Federation.

So what? The point is that it was applied.

As for the Federation, it was the liberals answer to the U.N. The Federation rules trumped local laws. Pathetically leftist.

As for IDIC, I don't recall that explanation. You may be right but I read something else. I'll have to look it up again.

Wasn't aware Nichols had a

Wasn't aware Nichols had a book. Grew up with TNG and only caught a few of the TOS on reruns. I was always under the impression that Rodenberry wanted a multi-racial/ethnic crew to show that humanity overcame racism.

Whether or not that is true or revisionistic history, I don't know.

I think exposing pre-warp civilizations to people with warp technology would be a bad thing. Just imagine if a few Ferengi's popped down and visited the Egyptians. They would more than likely be worshipped as gods and could have ruled as such, enslaving humanity with very little resistance.

I can see and am willing to concede the point of the Federation as analogous to the UN to a point. The Klingon Empire never made it into the Federation, eventhough they became allies by Picard's time, because there were too many cultural differences. Technology sharing was possible with the Klingons, but not without expressed consent from Star Fleet Command.

As for the IDIC, if you go by chronology, an IDIC pendant was given to T'Pal around 2153 from her mother (who was in hiding because she was a Sirreck) via her fiance. The IDIC pendant had been implanted with a map to cross the forge to where her mother was hiding, etc.

They just killed the

They just killed the franchise. I hope the few extra international dollars was worth it. It will need to last.

To me, this is another

To me, this is another example of how they don't support the troops.  Clearly,  Hollywood can't separate the war from the brave men and women fighting it.  The GI Joe tradition was established long before this war; hell, have the story take place during WWII.

And: They're going to tackle the "double-crossing Scottish arms dealer" enemy.  But won't the Scottish Council for the Anti-Defamation of Scottish People protest and demand the script be changed (like an Iranian group successed in doing re: a Harrison Ford movie)?

Of course not. Pick the easy targets you ball-less wonders.

Hollywood

The movie industry has to be one of the most conceited industries in the history of, um well, industry.

For years the MPAA has been arguing that movies are making less money beause of piracy. This may be true to some extent, but I believe it has more to due with the fact that there is less talent in the writing pool and too much input from the higher-ups.

Superman, horribly written, had to change a tag-line, was a major departure in character memes (hello Lois Lane is supposed to be neurotic, not well together) and poorly cast.

Star Wars Ep 1-3, are proof that George Lucas has alzheimers disease and should never be allowed with in 100 meters of any script, anywhere.

Obi Wan (ep 5): "There goes our only hope." (Paraphrasing)

Yoda (ep 5): "No, there is another."

Obi Wan, should have said, "Oh yea, I held them both when they were born. Silly me, just forgot."

Luke: "Do you remember our mother, what was she like?"

Leah: "I barely remember her. She died when I was little."

That would be okay except Padme died right after giving birth. I'm also curious how the adopted daughter of a former Senator becomes a Princess.

Transformers...well, you don't want to get me started on that piece of excrement.

Now this. What is next Hollywood, a remake of Citizen Kane where Rosebud is a skateboard? I know, how about a remake of Mr. Smith Goest to Washington but he fights to defend partial-birth abortions.

<insert something clever>

Firstly, when Obi-Wan

Firstly, when Obi-Wan "forgets" Leia, it could also be that he didn't consider her to be an option since she hadn't been trained as a Jedi.

Secondly, Leia's remark about barely remembering her mother could have been made in the sense of, "My adoptive parents told me a little bit about her, but I barely remember any of it."

Thirdly, Leia became a princess because her adoptive father, Bail Organa, in addition to being a senator was also head of the Royal Family of Alderaan.

Finally, this entire post proves conclusively that I have far too much time on my hands...

If you don't stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them!

Better to shut one's trap

Better to shut one's trap and have others wonder than to open wide and scream, "I'm a Star Wars geek!"

Ok, I paraphrased a little...but, I can still kick Lucas' ass in the dialogue department. Hey, for fun, watch Episode II on DVD and skip the Anakin/Padme storyline. That movie is MUCH better.

Why is it that lefties believe that 'the people' noted in the 2nd are different than the 'the people' mentioned elsewhere in the Bill of Rights?

Sorry Tom, those first two

Sorry Tom, those first two comments are dogs that won't hunt.

Granted, I've never been involved of the delivery of twins that my former apprenice (who turned evil, btw) but, I doubt that would be a moment that I ever forget. Afterall, he did remember Luke being born, why wouldn't he remember Leia?

As for the second one, Leia specifically stated that she remembered her mother was beautiful. A very aesthetic thing, would you think not?

As for the Senator, I was not aware of his Royal lineage.

<insert something clever>

This shouldn't come as a

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.  Tell me one devoted news event, a serial, or a movie that honors the fighting servicemen and women as heroes.

This media, whether it is Hollyweird or New York, is shameful.  They should be shunned, ridiculed, and held up to scorn.

By the way, it is not that we don't have heroes during this time, or for that matter at any other time.  It is this drive by media cabal that refuses to recongize them as such.

We are coming up on the sixth anniversary of 9/11.  And, still at home, we live in peace. We haven't had a single successful attack on our shores since 9/11.  This is in no small part because of the dedicated men and women that make up our armed forces and the leadership of our president, George Bush.

Vote Republican in '08!

That's exactly what I was thinking.

You can blame this on

You can blame this on lorenzo di bonaventura, the producer. apparently an american joe will "alienate" foreign audiences.

I lived in Europe for 8

I lived in Europe for 8 years. Over there, Joe is called "Action Man".

Gene Autry. Mel Brooks.

Gene Autry. Mel Brooks. Henry Fonda. Clark Gable. Benny Hill. Burt Lancaster. Steve McQueen. Andy Rooney. Charles Schultz.

And that's just some of the names from World War II. Bite it, Paramount.

Quo usque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra? Quam diu etiam furor iste tuus nos eludet?

Ummmm...

Some rumors claim that the title "G.I. Joe" will even be dropped in the international release to be replaced by "Action Man" (the original name of the Joe series' British soldier) so that the name won't offend anyone outside the USA.

I wouldn't read too much into that.  "Action Man" vs. "G.I. Joe" is a simple marketing thing.  If the franchise has been known overseas as "Action Man," then it makes sense to market a movie under that name.

Really, the international title for the movie doesn't even bother me.  Movies are renamed for overseas markets all the time.  Don't ask me for an exhaustive list of examples, but at the very least movie titles are changed so that they translate more easily into other languages.

As for the transformation of G.I. Joe into an international co-ed counter-terrorist organization based in Brussels, well, that sort of thing has already been done:  La Femme Nikita (okay, they were based in Paris).  Talk about watching something with a new perspective in the post-9/11 & -Abu Ghraib world.  That show would never get made today.

Finally, as for Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry was a secular humanist who thought that man needed to evolve out of the need for "silly" things like nation-states, pursuit of wealth, religion, and other such nonsense.  See "The Omega Glory" for Star Trek's take on nationalism and any number of episodes for "religion is evil."  It's entertaining and I've been a lifelong fan, but I wouldn't want to live in the Federation, especially on earth (a "socialist utopia" as a friend of mine called it).

Just imagine the how they

Just imagine the how they could improve on "To Kill a Mockingbird"

Liberalism

Modern liberalism is the cancer which killed the American dream. All we can do now is wait another generation or two to wipe this once great nation from our memories altogether.

Vote for Hillary, vote for "change"--you'll get it.

Everyone's jumping to condemn this way too quickly.  The screenplay hasn't even been written yet.  As a matter of fact, this is the third proposed re-write.

I disagree. Sitting around

I disagree. Sitting around and doing NOTHING is why these sorts of things get done in the FIRST place! Unless, of course, you don't mind seeing things you love destroyed because you didn't have time enough to stop it because you were sitting around waiting to be "officially" told things? If so, you probably don't belong on this site.

And even in your own link, it proves my point that they intend to eliminate the U.S. Army connection for Joe:

"Story is set at Brussels-based G.I.J.O.E., an acronym for the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, and revolves around an international co-ed force of operatives who use high-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil org headed by a double-crossing Scottish arms dealer."

So, it looks like I am right, after all... unless our attacking them changes their minds!

Hence the REASON for this post!

G.I. Joe

Will James Brolin play GI Joe?

Seems he was soooo realistic with Reagan.

Of COURSE he will. G.I. Joe

Of COURSE he will. G.I. Joe is a plastic, immovable, stiff faced toy, after all! Brolin is the PERFECT casting!

No Warner, I'm saying that

No Warner, I'm saying that all franchise-driven movies have had their share of rumors, and this is no exception.  It's too soon to tell.  Besides, if posting a blog is your idea of really "doing something" then thousands of geeks already have this one covered. >;D

The Brussels/GIJoe acronym quote is simply a holdover from the previous articles on the subject.  And Lorenzo is acutely aware of the negative fan reaction to this "not yet news" that's floating around.

In Geekland, the poop has been hitting the fan since the very first announcement of this.  The majority of Joe fans are highly patriotic and supportive of the troops*.  Many Joe fans are serving as we speak.

Furthermore, to remove the American in "Real American Hero" as well as cutting out the main villain (a terrorist according to the comics and toon) would provoke fans far more than the Transformers movie ever did.  The fans argue that at least Michael Bay's Transformers had most of the main villains.  So it's obvious that messing with GIJoe can only serve to hurt it.

Finally, the GIJoe convention is being held in Altanta Georgia this year (the weekend of the 28th in fact).  If the producers haven't heard the backlash to this by now, they will soon have the opportunity to deal with the fans face-to-face.

But thanks for the help anyway Warner, it's all very much appreciated.  I'm really on your side with this.  You are more than welcome to rub my nose in it if it doesn't pan out, but all I'm doing is waiting for the script to get written.  Is that asking so much?

I guess it is. . . >:^\

Like I said, you are willing to sit around and do nothing, they will write the script, and then all your little complaints will be for nothing because all is done and said as far as they are concerned.Script is done, everything is finished.

Nice going.

On the other hand, complain ahead of time and they may change their plans because they find their fans upset.

But certainly if they hear NOTHING they won't have any reason to make any changes.

Warnerwarnerwarner. . .

Like I said, you are willing to sit around and do nothing,

I didn't say that.  Read the post as written.  I'm saying more individuals than you were doing the exact same thing you were (blogging; complaining).  I did my share as well.

they will write the script, and then all your little complaints will be for nothing because all is done and said as far as they are concerned.Script is done, everything is finished.

Nice going.

You're not being very fair minded here.  They already had money invested in this to begin with.  The script could be completely different from the ones leaked out already.  And maybe it won't.

I'm saying you can't complain about something this soon in the game, or they'll think you're trying to second guess.  That's an indication that your bias is showing.

On the other hand, complain ahead of time and they may change their plans because they find their fans upset.

I guess you're not reading my posts and only summarizing/skimming them just to get the "chore" out of the way so you can sound off.

The fans were already upset weeks and weeks before you even heard about it.

But certainly if they hear NOTHING they won't have any reason to make any changes.

Don't forget, the Hollywood agenda only occasionally listens to the fans.  If they care about the toy license as they claim, it'll get made to the satisfaction of fans and become a big hit.  If they want another political soapbox, they'll simply have another box office bomb.

Either way, we win.  The people are voting w/their pocketbook in theaters already.  So no matter what happens with GIJoe in the next. . .two years (???), they will have done it with eyes wide open and will absolutely reap what they sow.

Trust me on this.  I promise.

Nebraskans for War: Peace through Strength

Submitting my nerd credentials....

Boy, am I about to step in it.  G.I.Joe actually has a very long and strange history that most people aren't aware of.  The reason the story seems so unusual is that film makers are once again capitalizing on comic books.

The Scottish arms dealer is a silver masked character from the 1980's named Destro(he also appeared in the cartoon series, but was decidedly NOT Scottish).  As messed up as the movie plotline might seem, it sticks pretty close to some of the comic book elements that the cartoon series abandoned.  The multi-national force was also introduced to both the cartoon and toy series(not sure about the comic books) and had a lot of characters with names like "Big Ben"(English obviously), "Red Star", and "Big Bear"(both Russian).

So I guess you guys are late to the party.  G.I.Joe has been in the process of being gutted for more than 20 years.  Most of the enemies fought were Scottish(the Iron Grenadiers), Australian(the Dreadnoks), or unspecified-never-unmasked-Asians(ninjas up the hoo-ha).  Oh, and robots.  They also took up environmentalism in the early 90's with a range of color change toys that were saving the planet from toxic waste and ozone depletion.

But up until now they at least retained the "Real American Hero" tagline....

Sounds familiar

I think that the folks behind this better watch out for Tom Clancy, because this sounds a lot like the premise of "Rainbow Six", just based in a different city (Brussels instead of London).

I thought about that earlier....Rainbow Six.

Sounds better than whatever this new acronym for GI Joe is supposed to stand for.

Great book BTW.  And figures into Clancy's later stuff, too.
