Is the Glass City becoming the Berkeley of the Midwest?
In today's Toledo Blade (HT Maggie Thurber; bolds are mine):
VACATE THE PREMISES
Mayor to Marines: Leave downtown
He says urban exercises scare peopleA company of Marine Corps Reservists received a cold send-off from downtown Toledo yesterday by order of Mayor Carty Finkbeiner.
The 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., planned to spend their weekend engaged in urban patrol exercises on the streets of downtown as well as inside the mostly vacant Madison Building, 607 Madison Ave.
Toledo police knew days in advance about their plans for a three-day exercise. Yet somehow the memo never made it to Mayor Finkbeiner, who ordered the Marines out yesterday afternoon just minutes before their buses were to arrive.
"The mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people," said Brian Schwartz, the mayor's spokesman.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓"He did not want them practicing and drilling in a highly visible area."
..... Members of the 1st Battalion, 24th Marines have trained periodically in downtown Toledo since at least 2004 and most recently in May, 2006.
..... The Reservists' visit was no surprise to Toledo police, who Tuesday issued a news release to media outlets on behalf of the Marines that asked Toledoans not to be startled by the sight of camouflaged soldiers toting M16 rifles.
..... A pair of Marines spent the better part of yesterday setting up the Madison Building with generators, heaters, radios, and food to become the unit's overnight headquarters.
..... (Marine) Sergeant (Andrew) Davis and other company leaders estimated the total cost of the aborted training exercise, including travel, at roughly $10,000.
It's clear that Marine visits for training exercises have become a routine thing. At least one of these exercises had to previously have taken place since Finkbeiner was re-elected mayor in November 2005 after a term-limited break in service. If he didn't like what the Marines did in 2006, he could have told them not to come back after-the-fact in 2006. But noooooo.
"Somehow," the Blade's coverage missed this crucial point.
Maggie adds:
This is the most insane thing I've ever heard of. Marines don't frighten me! They give me comfort and confidence that our nation is so well-protected by such dedicated individuals. Perhaps it's only Carty who is frightened.
What's frightening is how out of touch the mayor is.
This is disgraceful. The Mayor owes the Marines an apology and a re-invite. The City owes them 10 grand.

February 9, 2008 - 15:17 ET by goldenthroatLet's see - first it was San Fran, then Berkeley, now TOLEDO? As a proud resident of Ohio this is an absolute outrage to me!
The next time his idiocy, Mayor Finkelberry, needs national guard assistance called to his fair city, they should just say "Uh, sorry Mayor - you kicked the Marines out last time, remember? And since they are not allowed to come back, we're staying out, too. Guess you're on your own now!"
BTW - this moron used to be a Republican and won the last election as a Demoncrat. Any other questions?

February 9, 2008 - 15:46 ET by Wilbur747after a career as an AF aviator and having worked with not only Marines, but all the services, I can only imagine what these Marines must go through to get where they are only to have an idiot make this proclamation.
I am sickened by the lack of respect for our VOLUNTEER military (they do it out of love for America). OK, so he has a problem with GW Bush and the 'warmongering Republicans', and the war on terror. Fine, but don't take it out on the military. This mayor (read: idiot) should embrace any training the men and women in the military could receive in his city and show his support by stepping up and offering his services instead of cancelling the exercise based on people being "scared". After all, Toledo may need their help someday.
If he was worth his salt he would put out a press release and tell inform people of what was happening and since Toledo has provided many of their sons and daughters to the Armed Forces, he'll be surprised at the out-pouring of support these fine folks would receive from Toledo's residents.
But you can't reason with a liberal, only emote.

February 9, 2008 - 15:06 ET by GForceI suggest that everyone who reads this send and email to the mayor and let him know what a complete jackass he is. Perhaps he could have had a "Meet the Marines" weekend festival.

It seems as if a lot of people are PO'd.
Thank you so much for taking the time to email the
Chamber. We share your concern and
frustration with the actions of Mayor Finkbeiner regarding the Marine training
exercise. We are forwarding your comments to the Mayor's office and to City
Council. Some writers have expressed an intent
to boycott area business, however, by doing this, all of the community
suffers unnecessarily because of the unfortunate action of the Mayor. While we respect and share your frustration - we hope you will reconsider your decision to
boycott our businesses based on the
actions of our Mayor. The business
community welcomes your business and

What Conservatives out there, are too busy raising a Family (indtead of aborting them), too busy working 10 hr days (instead of joining a Union), too busy enjoying life to run for political office ?
It's the motivated activists who run for office, and creep out of the Un-employment ranks into the Political Employment alternative.
Hopefully, an un-employed Conservative will be force by McCain's nomination to pursue the Political Employment alternative.
I can think of nothing better than Iraq Combat Troops returning home to America, Pissed off, motivated, looking for new employment, and suddenly deciding that McCain has set an Excellant Example of what to do with the rest of their Lives.
A new Sheriff is coming to Town via Iraq, and he ain't happy about what happened in Toledo/Congress while he was gone. They're Busy right now, but the new Mayor of Toledo will be home soon.

Rat Fink
February 10, 2008 - 04:06 ET by stratmanWhen I lived in Toledo in the 1990's there was a thriving, entrepreneurial Middle Eastern population in the city which resulted in some excellent Middle Eastern restaurants (like the Lebanese restaurant named Biblo's) and a fantastic bakery.
You may not have been able to get a good corned beef sandwich in Toledo back then but there was plenty of delicious houmas, gyros and chicken shawarma. And I don't recall women covering their heads or issues between Muslims and Christians, though in retrospect I suspect the owners of Biblo's was Christian. Then again, I was pretty busy studying to get involved with local politics and police blotters at that time. It honestly was never discussed or an issue for me or my circle of friends and associates.
Carty RatFink was the mayor then and was viewed as a goof and a Mini Me Boss Tweed by many. His repeated re-elections as mayor are as mystifying to me as Kucinich continually being re-elected in Cleveland. Toledo remained stagnant fiscally and decaying otherwise throughout my time in the city. Downtown was empty at nights, the great Toledo Museum was underemphasized and underutilized (as was the capable Toledo Orchestra), and the Jeep plant was always rumored a step or two from layoffs or closing without much significant new incoming industry to offset losses and to retain/slow the exodus of the tax paying citizens to the suburbs or other states. What a shame for The Glass City to lay fallow while big little-men like Finkbeiner run roughshod over the populace.
As I type this, MASH is on the television. Klinger is dressed in English riding clothes. Klinger was Lebanese and talked of his favorite restaurant Tony Packo's. I have been to the Jamie Farr LPGA Classic golf tournament and it was a class affair. I recommend trying Tony Packo's as well.

The city should be renamed Pelosiville
February 9, 2008 - 18:06 ET by ArchConservativeAs a former soldier, I know how long it takes to plan and execute a complex FTX like what the Marines were planning. It takes months, it takes permits, it takes supplies and coordination with transportation. For the mayor to be so flippant as to dismiss the Marines the way he did was unforgiveable. He destroyed their entire month of training and deprived these men of training that would be as close to real-world scenarios as they can get. I spit on your shoes mayor.
But what else do expect from a cowardly, poll-driven, anti-military official like Carty. As soon as this happened, the City Council should have convened a special meeting and voted "No Confidence" for their mayor.
This is exactly the kind of anti-troop, anti-war on terror, anti-rational thinking that goes on in the minds of Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of the anti-military left. It makes me sick to my stomach that people like this are given any kind of power. Well, to the people of Toldeo I say: you voted for this weasel, you can have him. Give the Marines their 10,000 dollars back and say goodbye to federal funding. Let the mayor back up his words with his convictions. If he truly hate the military the way he's expressing it now, let him do it without my money. Screw Toledo, screw Carty.

I too lived in Toledo for a
February 9, 2008 - 19:54 ET by Clear thinkerI too lived in Toledo for a short time in my youth, and maybe the people of Toledo really are scared, of everything. We lived in TownHouse apartments at the time when there was rioting going on all over the country in the 60's. My Dad heard them on the radio saying something that a huge mob was marching from the Toldedo Airport, rioting the whole way, and they were heading straight for us. He and some of the other men in our complex quickly got together and came up with a plan. Each of the men set up a chair on the small porches we all had out front and sat there with loaded rifles, shotguns, and some pistols. The crowd reached us about dusk. As some broke off of the main group and started to head into our complex all they saw as men on their front porches with guns. They quickly retreated and met up with the main group again. The crowd then headed for a McDonalds that was across the ball fields from us. They were met by the owner and his 2 sons and a few friends all carrying some kind of firearms. The crowd left McDonalds alone that night too. The National Guard showed up later that evening and almost all rioting across the city stopped.
The moral of this story, most people in Toledo are cowards.
I have never in my life been afraid of any of our men and women in uniform. In fact, I always felt pretty darn safe when they were around. Screw Toledo. The next time they have riots, I hope the National Guard stays home.
The Conservative movement is about to be reborn.
