Bob Schieffer Tilted Strongly Left in the Final 2004 Debate

This year’s final debate moderator, CBS’s Bob Schieffer, clearly did not take pains to appear objective before the debate. He opened fire on the October 5 Face the Nation by denouncing "the Palin factor... a campaign that's turned down and dirty. Down in the polls, the McCain campaign has found a new attack dog." After the opening music, he returned to the hatchet-woman line: "She took after Barack Obama in a style reminiscent of Spiro Agnew when he was Richard Nixon's running mate." He asked if the Republicans were going to get "nastier and nastier."

Schieffer also failed the fair-and-balanced test in a review of the debate he moderated in 2004. Six questions came from the left. Another three dared Bush to disagree with the liberal media’s definitions of acceptable views. Only three questions to Kerry came from a more conservative direction. Here are some examples of questions to Bush:

No to Social Security privatizing: "You have proposed to fix it by letting people put some of the money collected to pay benefits into private saving accounts, but the critics are saying that's going to mean finding a trillion dollars over the next ten years to continue paying benefits as those accounts are being set up. So where do you get the money? Are you going to have to increase the deficit by that much over ten years?"

Ban those assault weapons: "Mr. President, new question, two minutes. You said that if Congress would vote to extend the ban on assault weapons, that you'd sign the legislation. But you did nothing to encourage the Congress to extend it. Why not?"

Parroting Kerry: "He said, and this will be a new question to you, he said that you had never said whether you would like to overturn Roe v. Wade, so I'd ask you directly: Would you like to?"

Are you a religious nut? "You were asked before the invasion or after the invasion of Iraq if you'd checked with your dad, and I believe, I don't remember the quote exactly, but I believe you said you had checked with a higher authority. I would like to ask you: What part does your faith play on your policy decisions?"

By contrast, here are some questions to Kerry:

Tax hikes are essential: "You pledged during the last debate that you would not raise taxes on those making less than $200,000 a year....How can you or any President, whoever is elected next time, keep that pledge without running this country deeper into debt and passing on more of the bills that we're running up to our children?"

Hike the minimum wage: "The gap between rich and poor is growing wider. More people are dropping into poverty. Yet the minimum wage has been stuck at...$5.15 an hour now for about seven years. Is it time to raise it?"

Kerry vs. his church: "The New York Times reports that some Catholic archbishops are telling their church members that it would be a sin to vote for a candidate like you because you support a woman's right to choose an abortion and unlimited stem cell research. What is your reaction to that?"

Is Bush to blame for lost jobs? "You know, many experts say that a President really doesn't have much control over jobs. For example, if someone invents a machine that does the work of five people, that's progress. That's not the President's fault. So I ask you: Is it fair to blame the administration entirely for this loss of jobs?"

It’s easier for a pundit to call the Democrat the winner when the moderator’s questions lean strongly to the left.

If Schieffer's performance in 2008 is anything like the tilt of 2004, the Obama campaign will feel like they're whipping down another media-greased Slip and Slide toy.

Let's see now it was PBS's

Let's see now it was PBS's Ifil (Obama advocate) for the Palin - Biden debate.  And it's Brokaw and Scheifer and, was it Lehrer(?) for the Obama/McCain debates?

I wonder if the Libs would sit still for having debates moderated by, say Hannity, O'Reilly, Limbaugh and Coulter?

And why does the GOP allow this obvious travesty?

I will avoid the telecast.

Why is that old goat moderating anything?

Bob Schieffer is just another liberal tool in the woodshed.  BrokeJaw, that black woman and Schiefer?  Why does McCain agree to those moderators?  Oh...yeah...that's right...because he is running to lose!

Why doesn't Fox put on a debate?  If the Dims don't show up, who cares?  They are a broken record anyway.

I do not like McCain.  Never have and never will.  I have decided to vote for him because of the danger of Obama but other than Palin, he has given me nearly nothing.  I am so sick of this current crop of "Republicans" and cannot wait for the day that they are gone!

Schieffer is only a few

Schieffer is only a few months younger than McCain.

How can we be sure he won't drop dead during the debate, or get, you know, befuddled?

This clown's objective

This clown's objective tonight is to keep it as benign and Messiah friendly as possible so The One can sit on the ball and run out the clock.  If McCain was not such a bumbling fool, he would ignore all pathetic questioning and talk to the camera and Obama directly about what he wants to and needs to.......but he won't and to save my blood pressure, I refuse to watch this nightmare.

When your team is down by 2 touchdowns with 5 minutes to go, is dealing with a clearly partial ref, and has a coach that does not get aggressive enough to win, you flip off the TV and do something constructive.

That's why I say Sen.

That's why I say Sen. McCain should ignore the moderator, (or should I say enabler?), and pound on Obama on his own. What does he have to lose?

Sen. McCain, I want you to FIGHT for this election.

The time for reaching across the aisle is not during the campaign but for after you win the election.

FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FOR YOUR COUNTRY!!!!!

enabler!  That is a word I

enabler!  That is a word I use to describe all the white liberals voting for this guy and making sure the world knows about it!!  But that is a different topic.

Here is the problem Scuba...you are 100% on gameplan but McCain will not do it......game over!  I also think for his closing statements, he should repeat the end of his convention speech.  i think in a quiet, serious tone it would have impact

Also, why the hell have they not made a commercial out of the conversation between the Plumber and Messiah??!  They don't have to add anything except "I am John McCain and I approve this message" at the end!!

worst.campaign.ever!

Yeah, I know, Sen. McCain

Yeah, I know, Sen. McCain is to nice.

As the song goes, "Nice guys finish last, your running out of gas, your sympathy will get you left behind".

Debate Moderators

Mattm: I'm not watching the debate either. I do not need another minute or hour of Senator Hussein worship. There are reports that some have already emailed the media claiming BHO won the debate! I just hope that McCain does not get suckered into the face to face confrontation that BHO is asking for regarding Ayers.  This is an important issue but McCain has to do it on his terms. BTW there are many others capable of conducting theses debates in addition to those you mentioned. Thomas Sowell would be great in this roll.

The BHO alliance with radicals, crooks and terrorists is very important and relevant.  We can not see into the heart or mind of him so all we have to rely on are his associations and the rhetoric that he spouts.

 Does anyone find it

Does anyone find it interesting that CBS, the host for tonight's debate, also put out a poll this week showing Obama has a 15 point lead? Maybe it's just coincidence.

Obama's Economic plan: more taxes, more spending, more regulation. Prosperity here we come.

who was/were the idiot(s)

in the GOP that agreed to these three commies being the "moderators" of the debates?  The grand finale: Bob Schieffer of all people.  The most disgusting and vile "news"person I have ever seen.  This is the same jerk that seems giddy when bad things happen for Bush (like any troops deaths in Iraq) and then absolutely sneers when mentioning the name of any Republican, but salivates when talking about democrats or communist dicatators like Chavez.  Un-freaking-believable!
