Newtown Kids Choir to Sing 'Call Me Maybe' at Grammys

In today's "You've Got To Be Kidding Me" segment, a group of kids from Newtown, Connecticut - some are students that attend Sandy Hook Elementary School - will be performing Carly Rae Jepsen's hit song "Call Me Maybe" at Sunday's Grammy Awards.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday evening:

A group of children from Newtown, Conn. who recently recorded a version of "Over the Rainbow" are preparing for a live appearance during the E! Network's Grammy Awards preshow on Sunday.

"American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest will be flying a crew to Connecticut and plans to interview the children via satellite during the E!'s "Live From the Red Carpet" preshow, said Tim Hayes, who co-produced the recording.

The children also will be singing Carly Rae Jepson's hit song, "Call Me Maybe," he said.

For the record, here are some of the the lyrics (with emphasis added to better demonstrate the absurdity):

I threw a wish in the well,
Don't ask me, I'll never tell
I looked to you as it fell,
And now you're in my way

I'd trade my soul for a wish,
Pennies and dimes for a kiss

I wasn't looking for this,
But now you're in my way

Your stare was holdin',
Ripped jeans, skin was showin'
Hot night, wind was blowin'
Where do you think you're going, baby?

Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?

It's hard to look right,
At you baby,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?

Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?

And all the other boys,
Try to chase me
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?

You took your time with the call,
I took no time with the fall
You gave me nothing at all,
But still, you're in my way

I beg, and borrow and steal
Have foresight and it's real
I didn't know I would feel it,
But it's in my way

Nice wholesome song for elementary school kids to sing, don't you think?

Now if you wondering if I'm being a tad too Puritanical, here's the group performing on ABC's Good Morning America last month. Take a look at some of their ages:

Forgive me, but some of these kids look like they could be in kindergarten or first grade.

Maybe that's what led Mediaite's Matt Wilstein to ask, "Will the performance be another sweet, touching musical moment for America to embrace? Or will it cross the line into an exploitative ratings ploy that takes advantage of the Newtown tragedy?"

I say the latter.

How 'bout you?
