AP Skeptical: 'McCain Volunteer Claims Attacker Cut 'B' Into Face'

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

UPDATE AT END OF POST: Todd admits to making this all up.

Not surprisingly, some skepticism is being expressed concerning Ashley Todd's assertion that she was mugged by an Obama supporter who cut a "B" into her face Wednesday night when he discovered that the Republican volunteer had a McCain-Palin bumper sticker on her car.

Most prominently, the Associated Press seemed less than convinced with the veracity of the gruesome story NewsBusters shared with readers Thursday about a McCain campaign worker's fateful encounter with a mugger at an ATM in a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, suburb.

The AP made its skepticism clear with the headline, "McCain Volunteer Claims Attacker Cut 'B' Into Face," (photo courtesy Ace):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

A campaign volunteer for John McCain told police she was robbed at knifepoint at an ATM and knocked down by a man who then carved a "B" in her face after noticing a sticker for the presidential candidate on her car.

Police said the woman, 20-year-old Ashley Todd of College Station, Texas, refused medical attention. An officer saw the injury, but the police report did not describe its size or severity, a police spokeswoman said.

Readers should note that nowhere in the AP piece were the following details reported by the websites of the ABC and CBS television affiliates in Pittsburgh (WTAE and KDKA respectively):

  • The assailant was black.
  • After seeing her McCain-Palin bumper sticker, the assailant said, "Oh you're with McCain, you're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson."
  • According to the police report, the officer confirmed that he "observed the wound on the right side of [her] face."

One has to wonder why the AP chose not to report these details.

Moving forward, the AP isn't the only outlet showing skepticism concerning Todd's story. The following was reported by TMZ Thursday:

Pittsburgh law enforcement sources tell TMZ they have serious questions about the authenticity of the alleged victim who says she had her face cut by a politically-motivated attacker.

We're told there are several things about the alleged attack that don't add up. A Pittsburgh PD official says they are conducting a "thorough investigation" and have not determined if the alleged attack is real or a hoax. But we're told there is definitely a level of skepticism.

Michelle Malkin is also questioning Todd's veracity:

She refused medical treatment after reporting the incident to police. Why on earth would she do that?

Some are finding the backwards "B" on her face suspect. Our friend Ace offered a few possible explanations:

For one thing, the image could be flipped.

For another thing, she could have taken a picture of herself in a mirror.

For a third -- if she were on her back, her head held by the attacker's left arm below her chin, her head between his legs as he scratched -- she'd be upside down as oriented to him.

In the end, this mystery is very easily solved. As most of you know, I was a bank manager for two different financial institutions in the early '90s. Both of them -- and likely almost all in our nation -- had cameras taking pictures from their ATMs as part of their security systems.

I'd be quite surprised to find out that the bank branch Todd was at didn't have such a camera inside its ATM. As such, it should be very easy to confirm whether what she claims did or did not happen.

That said, the little skepticism media are throwing at this story does indeed make it less likely that it will get much attention if Todd's assertions are validated. After all, by then, this will be old news.

Isn't skepticism a great thing? Think media outlets would be this skeptical if Todd was a black Obama volunteer and her alleged assailant was a white McCain supporter?

*****Update: Todd has now admitted to making this all up:

Police sources tell KDKA that a campaign worker has now confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter "B" in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker. [...]

This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.

The commander added that Todd will face charges; but police have not commented on what those charges will be.

According to Megyn Kelly speaking on BOR, Todd claims the attack happened away from the security camera. Guess we'll have to wait to see what happens.

Change is what you're left with when you've spent all your dollars.

Got it.

McCain supporters widely reported to have shouted "kill him".  Turns out only one reporter "witnessed" this so-called story,  FBI debunks.  Check.

But a twenty year old gets mugged, tells the police it was a Barack supporter, and all kinds of skepticism, and openly questioning headlines about said event.  Check.

Where's mb?  I need about a carton of duct tape until the silly season is over.

In his own words (19 seconds):  This man is qualified to be VP?

Sorry...

But I fall into the skeptic column on this story.  I would definitely like to wait until the ATM video (which I assume is available) is looked at.

Now, that being said, there is still the double standard.  There were certainly no stories doubting the "Kill him!" BS.  And if someone claimed a McCain supporter did something like this, there would be no press skepticism either.

me too

I would probably wait a bit on this one too.   It reminds me a little of Morton Downey's backwards swastika that he did to himself.   You have to give the girl the benefit of the doubt though.

Though if it were to turn out to be a hoax, you can bet that the media will jump all over it calling the McCain camp racist even though they ignored the original attack.

I'm in the same camp.  One way or another, there's an unstable person with strong political conviction as the culprit.  It does follow along with other buried stories involving Obama-supporting extremists.  It does come at a time and in such a way that it's a little difficult to believe.  If this is a hoax, she earns the ire of many.  If she is the victim here, she has my sympathy and apologies for doubting the circumstances.

Jerry,

This is indeed the issue. When it comes to Democrat scandals, the Obama-loving/Bush hating media are always willing to give the accused the benefit of the doubt and the accuser a dose of healthy skepticism. However, when a Republican is on the other side of the pointed finger, it's always "Shoot first and ask questions later."

With this in mind, these folks are likely thinking that if they can drag this out, maybe they won't have to address it until either after the election or after it's become such old news that they needn't bother.  ns

not just accusations involving politicians

Let's not forget the press reaction to Crystal Magnum's accusation against the Duke students - immediately taking the side of the accuser (though I doubt the MSM will be rushing to Ms. Todd's behalf).

Likewise, I would like to wait for the investigation in this case as well before jumping to conclusions. The press needs to take the case seriously and let the investigators do their job.

The Obama Attacker Spin

Oh I can hear the liberals blaming this attack on Sarah Palin as Terry Moran on ABC was touting that Palin was endangering Obama, so liberals will state this attack was justified.

OK for the reality.

How does one little girl get two black eyes in the skeptical Pittsburgh Obama liberal Democrat police force?

I guess she is allot like Donald Young, Barack Obama's gay sex partner who accidentally had a full clip shot into him and the Chicago Democrat police force can't find that murderer either.

Of course the liberals are going to smear this little girl, but it really is beyond reprehensible the Michelle Malkins being so uninformed that they parrot the liberals almost like they are being paid out of the same money pool that pays liberals to write books.

People here are far too trusting in the Pittsburgh police. It won't matter if there is a recording at the ATM, because this was a local ATM crime and the police already know who this criminal is.
If he gets caught, it will be as likely as Obama being indicted for all his money crimes.

A person who is assaulted in a strange city who originates from Texas is going to feel just like women who are raped in being humiliated.
Put yourself in this woman's position in she is out campaigning in a new world and has a knife put to her throat, is beat, knocked down and then someone carves a B in your cheek.

What are we going to do Michelle Malkin make Kobe Bryant excuses for rape in this one too that the white girl deserved to get knocked around.

Once again it really doesn't matter now what the event was in this girl, who will be believed as the other side has more than enough reason to lie and cover this up.
I have experienced Obama terrorism and I know the kooks who are floating around him and those paid to work for his campaign as stooges.

What is most disgusting in this is once again America is facing a high tech rape of a woman.

Way to go Michelle Malkin, perhaps you should compare notes with Peggy Noonan so you can do a critique on woman beating etiquette if Ms. Todd's hair is mussed correctly or perhaps she should have tears.

God help you people who have to face a day when you aren't believed. Come on Michelle Malkin did Ms. Todd punch herself in the face?
Come on Pittsburgh police, maybe Ms. Todd robbed herself knowing 70 bucks would be an easy loss to deal with for being humiliated like Joe the Plummer all across the world.

Gee Pittsburgh keystone cops in all your Obama love I don't suppose you checked Ms. Todd's belongings and the surroundings to find out what happened to the money???
Great police work there Pittsburgh cops. The reason the money wasn't there is someone stole it.

Nobody knows except the people this happened to, but it is reprehensible for anyone to pick at this young girl. Assault and rape are the violation to a woman psychologically and unless you have been humiliated to your core, you have no idea how much you just want to crawl away and hide, even from doctors, especially when we now konw the Pittsburgh police were treating this woman like she made this up.

That is the story and it matches the entire story the way the FBI has been not doing a thing in Obama crimes by his kooks for months and Obama told his followers to go confront all McCain people.

But then Michelle Malkin it must have been Sarah Palin has deserved people hacking her mail and all the political rape she has been through.........because why on earth did Sarah Palin go on Saturday Night Live?

Brainless questions and the worst of it is once again coming from the supposed right.

Young

Thats the first I've heard of the Donald Young story. You want to talk about some suppressed news information -- reports on this story are next to non-existent. Very odd considering the proximity to a presidential nom, even in the wake of outstanding news suppression.

i know you probaly will not

i know you probaly will not be concernerd by this, but the young lady admitted she made the whole thing up.by why bother letting facts get in the way of a good rant

Me Skeptical

I am calling bulls&*t on this one.  There is no way this story is true and it will only hurt Mac's chances if it goes further.  I would like to be wrong, but I don't see that happening.   I do agree that this would be breaking news if it was a McCain supporter attacking a messiah supporter, everyone would know about it, but my smellonometer says garbage through and through.

Matt, you're echoing my sentiments exactly!

For the sake of the campaign, this story had better be true! When I first read it I had sympathy for this young lady. But as I began to think about it, it reminded me of the "Morten Downey" episode where he claimed to have had the swastika written on his forehead during an assault - and it turned out to be nothing but a cock-and-bull story.

If this account does turn out that this was staged, we will never hear the end of it from the MSM - and Osama Bama will be laughing all the way to the White House.

Pre Vote Violence just the beginning

Great article Noel.

with all the hype of violent McCain supporters agaist Barack suuporters (of which there are not one actual report just rumors), it seems the only ones geting violent are Barak Obama supporters after all. In the last week I have read of 6 McCain supporters being harrased, beaten, and now physically violated with the mark of the "B"east.

This is just the beggining.  If Barak loses his supporters will riot in the streets and kill many including white Obama supporters.  If he wins we will see the turn of racism(what we tern reverse racism) and all races but black races will be treated as scum of the earth by the new socialist black majority.  not only that we will see a collapse of the free market enterprise and the socialization of our Nation completed in the first 24 months of his presidency.

No matter who wins it is a lose lose situation

Hmm...

I'm not sure either about this story.  But, if a woman can accuse a few college guys of rape and basically screw their lives up without so much as a single word of doubt then after finding she was obviously lying not a word of digust is heard, then, I think we should give this girl the benefit of the doubt.  I might be eating my words later but that's how I was raised.

On the other hand if it turns out to be false, sorry, but I find it quite funny because it would seem that Repbulicans are learning their dirty tricks from the masters of dirty tricks the Democrats.

So...

News organizations show the proper restraint over a dubious story, and yet somehow they're still doing something wrong?

That had been my point

That had been my point since I had heard about this happening...if this was reversed, in every aspect...whether proven or not...the msm and all the Big Three would of had this on as the lead in their nightly news, and cable 24/7 ...this would of been Breaking News...but heck...this is related to The ONE after all...we cannot go there if this relates to the opposition.

Besides that...the msm wouldn't care one wit if this story after they carried it live was proved false, twisted whatever... if this was a democrat and this was proven false behind the scenes...why, the msm would just move on..like they have basically been for the most part been of my life.

Your object "New voter.

Your object "New voter. seeking truth through a jungle of matter of fact and matter of opinion" is funny.  There is no truth in any politician, just pick the one who you think lies the least.  Or in my case the one who I think has more of my morals and values.  Possibly the second one is better than the former but in picking the latter you must deal with the those pesky lies.

The truth lies in the record of facts, like voting records or statements made off the cuff.  A statement made when teh politician's guard is down or when he thinks no one is watching is valuable indeed.  Like Obama telling Joe the Plumberhe wants to spread Joe's money around to those who are less fortunate.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

I dont disagree

I dont disagree. Like you, I just don't think I can trust anything reported. This site does report some stories you don't hear anywhere else -- and not in the weird Alex Jones way.  I think it's important to keep all options open. I'm not sure how I fall in the morality issue. I've long thought issues of morality shouldn't be governed, or at least left up to the states. My main issue is that it's hard to see the way McCain has handled this election and think about how he'll act in the office. No doubt he'll be better with Foreign Relations, but I wonder what he'll do about immigration and jobs going overseas. I support drilling, but I don't know if he'll make alternative energy a priority. For that matter I don't know a thing about Obama.

As far as the off the cuff and record of facts, I don't think you can trust any candidate. Palin has over emphasized everything, Obama has underemphasized it back and then they have a big symantics war and leave me confused. Biden reminds me of an info-mercial salesman who can't stop talking even after he's made the sale, and McCain seems to be one step behind the momentum.

But all of those assumptons came from my watching what? The MSM, so when I started second guessing it I found this place as one of my rescources to see what real people think.

How many Aggies does it

How many Aggies does it take to fake an attack?  3, 1 to be the victim and 2 more to beat the crap otta the first one.  The backwards B may because she is an Aggie. We realkly need to sit this one out and check the story out

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Maybe the attacker was

Maybe the attacker was dyslexic(sp?) maybe he was looking dwon on her from the opposite direction. at any case the police will fiquire it out if it is a fake the Obama camp will expose it.

I think Obama is a dictator

I think Obama is a dictator in the making, the MSM his acolytes -- and I also think this story is fishy. Violent assailants tend to escalate. Her story is the guy was already beating her up, then was further enraged by the McCain bumper sticker. I just don't see an adrenaline-crazed assailant just scratching a neat B into the victim's face.

It doesn't add up, given what I know of criminal behavior.

scar

I have to admit I'm skeptical too. I haven't met an Obama supporter yet who can spell.

I too am skeptical.  Why

I too am skeptical.  Why would he do such a thing and yet restrain his hand?  I would imagine that if a mugger used a knife to carve an initial in someone's face it would require stitches to close it up.  And why a "B"?  Isn't Barack more commonly referred to as the big "O"?  Which, by the way is the bird's eye view of an a$$hole.

“But maybe you obviously have a better memory about that."- Wolf Blitzer

I'll give the woman the benefit of the doubt, but I'm leaning towards not believing that this happened. Was she knocked out cold while the letter was carved into her face? Who would sit still for a perfectly-formed letter "B" to be etched into one's face?

If it's a lie it's going to hurt McCain. He's already facing an uphill battle.

Riots in the Streets!

You all know damn well that  Barack Obama supporters would be rioting in the streets if this happened to an Obama supporter!

True or not would not matter!  Just like the Duke lacrosse "Rape" allegation it doesn't matter what the TRUTH is, it's the opportunity to riot and continue their Racial Hatred for Whitey!

Mr. Shepphard:

Why would AP report the race of the person Ms. Todd says attacked her?  What would the point be - other than to feed into bigotry and prejudice?  Not only does it serve no useful purpose, it is very destructive.

Responsible journalists know that race is only an appropriate item to include if it is part of a detailed description.  The height and weight of a violent attacker estimated by a victim do not qualify as a detailed description - period.

You seem to be saying

You seem to be saying that white people will read that and assume that the assailant is representative of his race.  That's a pretty bigoted and prejudiced assumption to make.

J. Frank, I'll tell you a story of a revealing event that happened when I was around 17 or 18.

I was standing on a downtown streetcorner waiting for the lights to change.  In front of me stood a young black woman with her 4 or 5 year old son.  As the light was about to change, a white guy in a van came speeding around the corner in obvious disregard for pedestrians.

So, the woman turns to her son as says, "See that?  White people don't wait for nobody!"

I have seen that kind of thing over and over again.  When Obama claims that his opponents are going to attack him because he's black, he's feeding the bigotry.  When Louis Farrakhan calls me a blue-eyed devil, he's feeding the bigotry.

Obviously feeding the bigotry goes both ways, only we're not supposed to talk about it unless the white guy is the bigot.

Fascinating to see...

j.frank,

Mr. Sheppard claiming this story of a young WHITE McCain supporter claiming to be savagely beaten by a large BLACK "Obama supporting" mugger NOT being reported by the liberal media. After a few comments on this site by those who have jumped onto the bandwagon of supporting this young woman's claim, we see how quickly the ones who question the story are called "TROLLS".

As being reported by the liberal MSM and many right leaning websites, the story is beginning to unfold into an attention seeking young woman craving the spotlight with a possible hoax and possible false police report. I wouldn't hold our breath for an apology from those who have accused us as being trolls for having our doubts and questioning the report. It's about the truth anyway and it seems the "trolls" are correct no matter the type of spin from the accusers as they try to cover their asses.

Mr. Sheppard you are getting your wish...the reports are beginning to circulate on questioning why this young woman, supporting McCain, would do such a thing to herself and the story she told.Is it to foment the hideous undercurrent of racism and incite hatred towards Obama? We will soon have our questions answered.

After seeing the picture, I have become very skeptical of this story. Looks like someone took great care not to break the skin while carving a "B" in her face. I doubt an assailant would take such care while pressed for time.

Score one for the Associated Press and Michelle Malkin's measured skepticism. (I never thought I would see those two line up on the same side of a story.)

Now, what does this really matter for the election? The exec VP of Fox News, John Moody, said that Todd's claim, if disproven, would sink the McCain campaign ( http://foxforum.blog... ), which I don't really buy. In the long run, your supporters may reflect your values, but you don't control them.

Mostly I think this story is important because I think we need to collectively chill out, and take a moment before we go off into fantasy-lands where we see that fantasmatic people are threatening or perpetrating violence. Even though you and I basically despise each other :-) I also expressed suspicion last night and was disappointed in my fellow NBers for jumping on the bandwagon.

I'm not here to say "nah nah I told you so" but it behooves conservatives to be honest and consistent.

candance...no hate...

candance,

It's okay to have distinctly different philosophies and views on the world we live. Please do not misinterpret my discussions, disagreements and anything else as being evil and hateful. It's a waste of time to carry hate and anger towards others who disagree with your point of view. Presenting a differing opinion entices one to think of the foundation to which one subscribes. Sure, arguments will get heated and feelings may get hurt, at least, having a say creates an opportunity for communication and an understanding of another poster's position. I do not despise you or anyone. The incessant name calling of posters as "trolls" ends most discussions for me. Like you said being honest and consistent behooves everyone...I would like to add at least a layer of humor if the opportunity presents itself.

I didn't see your post, so I don't know what you said

Matt,

None of us had any more information than any others, so anyone who judged quickly might have judged too soon, whether they came down on one side or the other--

--except that the evidence was, from the first, highly questionable.

(The reversed-B? People who saw that picture and thought the attack was 100% certainly real are probably seeing too much with their hearts--seeing what they want/expect to see.)

So, if you jumped too soon to a conclusion, you at least have the benefit of jumping to the correct conclusion; though you might take a lesson here from Michelle Malkin: if something smells funny, investigate first before publishing your thoughts.

What's with the hate?

BT,

Now, now, now...stop the hate. This thread has exposed a number of posters to what is to be described as race-baiting. Look at how the incident was described by Mr. Sheppard, read the comments, read the supporters and the skeptics. Those who were supporting this story were duped and made to look foolish. It happens all the time whether your right or left leaning. It's better to take a breath and chill out and let the story unfold...instead of trying to "scoop" the story. One of the reasons why the MSM didn't run it like Mr. Sheppard wanted was the lack of facts at first and then the evidence showing the victim's story as false. The best tactic after being exposed would have been to say, "Wow, I was wrong in my initial assumption." But, no, you want to lash out and attack those who were proven correct. Hypocrisy in full bloom.

are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they

And that, Mr. Sheppard

is the point.

I guess this is more newsworthy as a hoax than when CBS and ABC TV
affiliates in Pittsburgh reported it as fact. I wonder why. :-)  ns

The manufactured opinion outlets have proven time an again to be taken in by hoaxes. Susan Smith, Jennifer Wilbanks just to name a few of the "stories"that the MOO threw their weight behind at the drop of a hat. The major difference with those stories and the one here, is that those stories totally played upon the if it bleeds it leads motive that fuels so much of the MOO's coverage, while at the same time lacked ONE HUGE element that this story had.  This story had the "bleed it leads" angle, BUT and it's a huge BUT, it had negative implications for the MOO's "Chosen One". Why else would they not jump on the bandwagon and cover it?

I suppose since the sun shines on a dogs ass every once in a while I could believe that this was the once in a long while that the MOO actually checked a stories credibility and found it lacking, ummmmm NOT.  As so many have pointed out, if this had been an M carved in a black Barry supporting womans face by a 6'4' white dude the MOO's would have been screaming for blood from the first moment.

The hypocrisy and bias of the media knows no bounds.

"Believe it, scc.  The

"Believe it, scc.  The Obamites are out in full force threatening and
intimidating those speaking out against his policies; I should know
because I have been harassed, threatened and intimidated--at work, no
less."

I do believe it. Just had doubts about this one. I don't know what this woman was thinking. This is as stupid as the engaged woman who faked her own kidnapping years ago.

However, the man who attacked the McCain supporter with her own sign is TRUE.

I called this one correctly yesterday.

So shoot me.

I was critical of this girl from the start....her wounds didn't look violently inflicted.  A dead giveaway.

What to do with this idiot?

She's clearly misguided, and has issues.

Note to cops:  Throw the book at her.

Big time.

This kind of irresponsible behavior hurts everyone--it hurts the McCain campaign, it hurts Republicans generally, and it gives fodder to the Democrats to scream that Republicans are so desperate that they will stoop to lying about vicious attacks.

So, this idiot child needs to be locked up.

And I'll say it again:  Obama is a socialist.  Vote McCain.

And one more thing....

Couldn't help from borrowing a line from Steve Jobs.....

(I'm the one who called the pumpkin girl correctly yesterday--that she was a liar.)

As long as we are on the subject of political speech.

But I'm on my second yard sign this election season.  In our neighborhood (very nice), Republican campaign signs are notoriously and consistently stolen from our yard each and every four years.  So we just buy several signs, and replace them.  I'm hoping my McCain/Palin yard signs last through November 4, 2008.

After all these years of stolen Republican yard signs, I've concluded that Democrats don't respect my right to free speech, and that they don't respect my property rights.  It's really sad.  But that's the way it is.

I've accepted that my smalll yard sign thefts exemplify the larger philosophy of the Democrat Party--that free speech is on the way out, and there are no property rights any longer. (I refer to the soon-to-be enacted "fairness" doctrine and the recent Supreme Court case of Kelo v. City of New London (545 U.S. 469 (2005)) involving the use of eminent domain to transfer land from one private owner to another to further economic development.)

Folks, it's a slippery slope that we are on and it's not looking good for free speech and property rights. And with an out-of-control Congress and a liberal Democrat President, we're in for it.

Go McCain/Palin.

just one more thing AG

I'm the one who called the pumpkin girl correctly yesterday--that she was a liar

Lots of people were suspicious and said as much on the thread.

Can we just call this girl "Pumpkin Girl?"

Since it's Halloween and all--and since this girl carved her own face--can't we just call her "Pumpkin Girl?"

I know it's sick, but so too was her crime.

ag

ag,

I'm not sure I like the Pumpkin Girl moniker. This ends up being a sadder story than it was yesterday. I'm not sure we should make fun of this poor soul.

As I wrote here yesterday, the ATM security cameras would tell the real story. Now, this kid is likely going to be berated more by the so-called tolerant left than Joe the Plumber and Sarah Palin combined. The feeding frenzy on this will be more gruesome than Robert Shaw getting eaten by a great white.  ns

sorry noel

I respectfully disagree. Making up a story like that doesn't make you a victim. Lots of people on NB were harsh on the Duke Lacrosse accuser and IMO we shouldn't go easy on this girl because she worked for McCain.

okay

Point taken about the Lacrosse boys, but all and still this chick lied about an assault and directly linked it to an Obama supporter. If the news comes out that she has a history of mental unbalance or was on medication then I'll concede it's pitiful. But if the news comes out that she knew she was lying I won't feel bad.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. :)

Change is what you're left with when you've spent all your dollars.

can

Yep. She lied. And, she's going to be charged with falsifying a crime. I'm not sure what that will lead to. If she has no priors, I'd be surprised to see this go anywhere. We'll see.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to absolve her of responsibility. As a parent of a 20-year-old, I just feel badly for her. That's all. And, I would feel less sympathetic if she had actually accused a real person rather than a phantom. ns

i would have more sorry for

i would have more sorry for the girl i she just reported a false assault, but is is a pparent she said it was a black man obviously to cast a bad light on obama ..not much sympathy here..by the way,i pegged the duke case as a hoax almost as fast as i pegged this one...

"If
your answer is "No," with respects to John Grisham, imagine for a

The reporting of this incident has developed into an embarrassment for McCain.

UB

UB,

In your victory lap, you seem to be missing a very important fact: this story wasn't concocted by some conservative blogger in pajamas. It was independently reported by ABC and CBS TV affiliates in Pittsburgh both on television AND at their respective websites. Furthermore, the original AP piece -- Woman: Robber cut face over McCain sticker on car -- was by no means skeptical.

As such, before this matter was reported here, it was confirmed at multiple, reputable sources. And, once skepticism began to surface, I immediately created a separate article to address it. Finally, as soon as it was confirmed that Todd made this up, updates were added to this effect at the top of both articles.

With this in mind, you should do us all a favor and stop your dancing...it's almost as embarrassing as Todd's pathetic story.  ns

UB

UB,

Crickets? Ah, I'm not surprised. Your kind are very good at dishing it out, and run when you can't take it.

BTW: You can't hide behind "I went to sleep," or "I was doing something else," because you logged on to NB at 19:29 ET, checked new comments at this thread at 19:30 -- obviously including mine to you!!! -- and rather than respond to me chose to pat G-Man on the back for his insults towards NB and myself at another thread: http://newsbusters.o...

Then, at 20:17, and again at 22:06, you checked back in here to see what new comments had been posted. Ditto 22:08 and 22:09. Yet, you chose not to respond to me.

Therein is the reason why I typically ignore folks like yourself, and will continue to do so.

Adios.  ns

Why that's just full blown creepy...

Mr. Sheppard,

Sorry, I didn't know I was being tracked. Wow, how can I get those same tools to track you? I think you missed your calling for working at the NSA and tracking American citizens. How many posters on this site would find your actions over the line?

So, I have a few questions for you, Mr. Sheppard...oh, by the way I will be checking back, responding  and possibily ignoring some of your foolish comments...

Explain to me the sources to the reporters. Did the reporters receive the information from the Police or the McCain/Palin Campaign?

If the reporters received the report from the McCain/Palin Campaign, would you agree the Campaign was race-baiting?

You were too quick to jump on this story about the MSM not covering it. Michelle Malkin was quick to say "Hold up, this smells."

So, you updated as you went along, tried to spin it and cover yourself by trying to use a hypothetical situation by switching the roles of the characters, and also tried to use the Duke Lacrosse Trial as a shield...I got what you were trying to do in the first place. No rationale hides the fact of what you did.

It's time to stop shoveling, Mr. Sheppard. Look at the comments of both articles and determine the posters who are bigots and the ones who are not. You created this mess and exposed yourself.

At least some of the posters had the common decency to say they were wrong. I do not dance and celebrate on what you call my victory lap...there are no winners just losers. For we all lose when bigotry rears its ugly head.

coco,

Members here aren't "tracked." However, as you might imagine, every website does have a track function available to administrators for a variety of reasons. One is to track referrers. This is how we know who's linked to our articles. We can also track member comments to identify trolls.

In this case, the poster in question had been very active yesterday, especially in his accusations towards me. But, once I responded and heard crickets, I chose to identify if he was still logged on or if his weekend had begun. When I saw him logged on AND having read this thread multiple times, I challenged his silence.

As you suggested, there's nothing nefarious here. ns

Gosh, stop drinking so much...

Swizzlestick,

Any good conservative knows the party line...do not answer hypotheticals...Here's a few...

Q Let me ask you about some of the congressional reaction. You
have Senator Reid saying that President Bush must pledge not to pardon
Libby for his criminal conduct. What's the reaction to that?

MS. PERINO: Well, I'm aware of no such request for a pardon. And
as is afforded to all Americans, there is a process that is followed in
which to apply for a pardon. And I don't think that speculating on a
wildly hypothetical situation at this time is appropriate.

Q You're not closing the door to it, you're leaving the door
open to a pardon?

MS. PERINO: I'm not commenting on a hypothetical situation. I
think that that is the best way to respond to that. I think that there
is a process in place for all Americans, if they want to receive a
pardon from a President, be that any President that is in office, and
I'm aware of no such request.

Q Would the President be receptive to that?

MS. PERINO: It is a hypothetical situation. I'm never even
brought it up with him.

Bush at a news conference said that "that kind of question, a wise
question by a seasoned reporter, is the kind of thing that causes one
to either inject major military decisions at the end of a campaign, or
not. And I have made the decision that I wasn't going to be talking

sorry ubercon

Here I shall have to disagree with you. It's not a hypothetical question. We saw it with the dook case. Fishy story, contradictory details, airtight alibis from the boys, and zero interest from the MSM to sniff around.

The NY Times wrote a front page article in support of the accuser nearly six months after the case broke. Even after the charges were dropped rags like the Boston Globe reported that the "louts" found a way to "use their rescources" to move on and the Jim Rome radio show said that the boys were "guilty of everything but rape." A columnist for USA Today called the boys "hooligans" and said they did not deserve an apology regardless.

Being suspicious of Ashley Todd's story does not excuse the dook Lacrosse embarrassment.

Hi Cd!!!

Yeah, the Duke case was an obvious case of a Democrat prosecutor that didn't care who's lives he destroyed just to get power.

UberTroll,

So, when the infamous Tawana Brawley incident occurred, and it was later determined that she was full of BS, did you send a letter to Fat Al castigating him?

Of course, how could you have, as you most likely weren't downloaded into this world until 1996, judging by your childish rantings here.

As for Noel's two articles on this subject, where do you get off accusing him of employing "bigotry" in either of them. Is it because the alleged perpetrator in this made-up incident just happened to be black?

So, next time a crime is reported by the MSM that involves a black person as the criminal, no one should be able to write about it here at NB? After all, that would be promoting bigotry, at least as you define it, wouldn't it?

Why don't you just say that any crimes committed by a black person should just not be reported, period.

BTW-Your childish gloating is impressing no one here.

As my very good friend Blonde is fond of saying, "We need a better class of troll here."

Looks like he did!!!  JOY!!!!!

We are not DONE.

Not sure how I feel about all this

Hi Noel,

I'm happy that this is a hoax, not because it looks bad for McCain (as I've said before, I don't think the hoax looks bad for McCain--his supporters may reflect his values but he is not in control of them), but because I feel violence between people may be more common than hoaxes, and that, if this attack were true, it might have been a bad precedent. (Whereas, as a discovered hoax, I have some hope that it might actually be an object lesson for people to, as I've said before, chill the **** out. We're all Americans, whether we're voting Red, Blue, Green, or whatever color the Libertarians are.)

That said, I'm a little confused by the reasoning here. The stated goal of NB is to expose liberal bias--for example, to show how certain stories don't get reported in the MSM. And yet, here, to defend your posting of this story, you cite the fact that certain MSM-affiliates actually did cover this story. What gives?

I mean, here's a story that doesn't look kosher once you see a picture of Ashley Todd's face (and like you--maybe it's just low blood-sugar or something--but I can't really laugh about this. I mean, if it wasn't politics, she would probably have pulled a different sort of attention-getting stunt, but the attention she would get may not be the (medical, psychological) attention she needs. Others can laugh at her and call her pumpkin girl if they have the stomach to, but I feel bad for her).

So, it doesn't smell right, it is being reported in some news outlets--and you still decide to write a post about it? I'm just not sure I get the reason for that. (At the same time, writing up posts on questionable materials might be just what the internet is for.)

Now, as for some of other comments getting made about this--you asked elsewhere if this story will have legs now that it's negative for McCain (again, I don't really see the hoax as negative--the fact that McCain's Pennsylvania communications director was pushing this fishy story may be negative, but not the hoax itself). I'm sure we'll hear more about this story now, not because the MSM likes to make McCain look bad, but because now the story makes sense. (For instance, the backwards-B that flagged the story as suspicious from the start? Now it makes sense as a news-story.) I guess I don't see anything wrong with investigating before reporting.

(For an example on the other side, I understand that there's a lot of news out there right now, but I don't know why we haven't heard more about Mahoney's sex scandal--there's a case where it looks like you have enough info to run the story now--even if more comes out later, it would mostly be details: the skeleton of the story about a sex-scandal is there now, ready to run. But this story--I think CNN was right to hold off on it.)

(Also, I agree with your statement elsewhere about her accusation against a phantom--and wonder if her description was actually crafted so as to avoid hurting anyone (or anyone but Obama). I mean, how many 6'4" black guys are there in Pittsburgh?)

Okay, this post is long, as is this thread. What's new?

What if...

The left is usually pretty good at conspiracy theories and I have seen alot of them...I want to try my hand at it:

What if possibly this really DID happen because of a McCain/Palin sticker on her bumper but the Obama "truth squad" had to "fight the smear" and pressured her into a confession? Why else would she willingly give herself up to be a nimrod?

That was kinda fun. I should try that more often...

paleeeeeze....you are being funny right...a vast majority of people who delved into this story were smelling hoax right of the bat..only the people who wanted to be true ran with it and then proved wrong lash out at anybody who happens to mention they were wrong

pm

pm,

"a vast majority of people who delved into this story were smelling hoax right of [sic] the bat"

Oh, really? Hmmm. That's not what a Google News search of the first articles on this subject shows:

Pittsburgh Police: McCain Worker Robbed, Attacked   McCain supporter robbed, assaulted   Robber Carves ‘B’ In McCain Supporter’s Face   Woman: Robber cut face over McCain sticker on car   Police: McCain Worker Mugged, Attacked   John McCain supporter has letter 'B' scratched into face by attacker   McCain Volunteer Attacked, Mutilated in Pittsburgh   McCain Supporter Robbed and Beaten   McCain Volunteer Ashley Todd Attacked, Mutilated In Pittsburgh   McCain Volunteer Assaulted; Attacker Carves Letter on Her Face   Ashley Todd Photo: McCain Volunteer Attacked and Mutilated In ...   McCain Volunteer Viciously Beaten, Mutilated in Pittsburgh

Now, add in the original AP piece -- Woman: Robber cut face over McCain sticker on car -- and the first reports logged on air and electronically by the ABC and CBS TV affiliates in Pittsburgh, and your assertion is absolute nonsense. Seems your track record that you've been throwing at everyone about how right you are all the time is about to get a blemish on it...unless you can prove me wrong, of course.  ns

pm

pm,

More crickets. Color me amazingly unsurprised!  ns

first of all ,as far as the

first of all ,as far as the crickets are concerned,i am only on this site on weekdays and not all of them...i do have quite an exciting life away from my computer so i am never on on the weekends..second,i am not in the business of proving you wrong..i posted early on to wait for the police to preform their investigation ..silly of me i know but i always felt that a case like this should be completly investigated before everyone jumps because there was a case around like it and it turned out to be a hoax..AND QUITE A FEW PEOPLE HERE WANTED THIS TO BE TRUE...  sad...

pm

pm,

Excuse me, but didn't you scold me because "a vast majority of people who delved into this story were smelling hoax right of [sic] the bat"?

Now that I presented to you ALL of the original articles written on this subject with NONE of them expressing skepticism, you respond, "i am not in the business of proving you wrong"?

Wasn't that EXACTLY the point of your "a vast majority of people who delved into this story were smelling hoax right of [sic] the bat" admonishment?  ns

i stand corrected..my

i stand corrected..my statement was not right ,as you pointed out..and my original reply was not attempt to scold you,as i have no business scolding anyone except my children..and actually, that particular post was not directed to you as you are an obviously intelligent person, but rather to some inane dribble  i saw earlier..and it does not change my opinion that too many people wanted this to be true to deamonize obama and i still find that sad.

pm

pm,

Fair enough, and thank you for your decency. Very rare these days. :-)

As for how quickly this was jumped on, let me add a little something that might shed some light. When I first saw this story, I was shocked and angered by it. It practically took the air out of my lungs...honestly.

I did what I felt was the proper due diligence before I posted, and largely did so to question whether the story would get much attention from Obama-loving media. Please understand that the restraint you're requesting would NOT have been exercised by most of the mainstream media if this had been a black, female Obama volunteer having been "assaulted" by a white, male McCain supporter.

This would have been a prominent story on all three evening news programs, and front-page news Saturday.

In the end, despite this all being a hoax, and this girl clearly having psychological problems, the media double standard is still a big story in my view. Make sense?  ns

yes..it does make sense

yes..it does make sense ..again ,i was referring to a few postings i saw earlies, and your columns do show upmost professionalism and none of my replies were referring your report..

just so you know...i would

just so you know...i would have shown restraint..i do not care much for most of the media, whether they are "in the tank" for obama ,and you do know who i mean ,or those who just parrot the republican talking points like fox news...i think in this day and age,it is important for voters to educate themselves..just takes research
