Joe the Plumber Calls Obama's Tax Plan Socialist, Sawyer Defends It

Joe the Plumber, aka Joe Wurzelbacher the Ohio man that has suddenly become the face of the presidential campaign, told ABC's Diane Sawyer Thursday that Barack Obama's tax plan to spread the wealth is "a very socialist view, and it's incredibly wrong."

Predictably, Sawyer defended Obama's position by saying it's only a three percent tax increase that people making over $250,000 would be required to pay.

Deliciously, the "Good Morning America" guest wasn't backing down (partial video embedded right):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓
DIANE SAWYER, HOST: If people making $250,000 should not be taxed additionally -- it's, by the way, three percent, from 36 percent to 39 percent under Sen. Obama's plan -- if those people should not be taxed additionally, even though they're in the top five percent of America, what about people who make a million dollars or five million dollars?
JOE WURZELBACHER, PLUMBER: Well, I mean, quite honestly, why should they be penalized for being successful? That's what you're telling me, that's what it sounds like you're saying. It's wrong. I mean, because you're successful, you have to pay more than everybody else. I mean, we all live in this country, you know, I mean it's a basic right. And Obama wants to take that basic right and penalize me for it is what it comes down to. I mean, that's a very socialist view, and it's incredibly wrong. I mean, if it's $250,000 now, what if he decides, "Well, $150,000 you're pretty rich, too. Let's go ahead and lower it again." You know, it's a slippery slope. When's it going to stop?

Great question, Joe?

For those interested, the entire GMA segment is available here. Also, this is the complete discussion between Wurzelbacher and Obama that started all this:

And, this is an interview Neil Cavuto did with Joe on Tuesday wherein the now-famous plumber said he was even less comfortable with Obama's plan after speaking with him:

Somehow I get the feeling we're going to be hearing much more from Joe...how 'bout you?

Post facto exit question: is Joe the Plumber this election's October surprise? Could he single-handedly change this entire campaign?

Think about it: regular guy wanting to advance himself without the shackles of a socialist tax plan.

Could this be a game-changer?

If McCain wins, he should

If McCain wins, he should give Joe the Plumber twice as big of a tax cut that he would have been getting under McCain's plan. :-)

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

Yes, the man speaks with

Yes, the man speaks with clarity and from the moral highground.  My wife said last night that if Obama wants to give all his money to the "less fortunate" then why is he living in a multimillion dollar house.  I replied that it is not Obama's money that Obama wants to give to the less fortunate, its ours.

Now I am all in favor of helping people, but this is government stealing.  Taking what someone worked their whole life to achieve to give to someone who has done nothing for it is stealing, plain and simple.  Why is that so hard to understand?

“But maybe you obviously have a better memory about that."- Wolf Blitzer

well...

I think it's hard to say that someone who makes less than $250,000 a year just isn't trying hard enough. If all you had to do to be in the top 5% of earners in this country is work hard... well, it would be a lot higher than 5%.

You're missing the point

I think it's hard to say that someone who makes less than $250,000 a
year just isn't trying hard enough. If all you had to do to be in the
top 5% of earners in this country is work hard... well, it would be a
lot higher than 5%.

It's not just hard work, but risk.  When you buy or open a new business, it's risky.  You could lose everything.  But, you're not going to get rich working for someone else.  But let's look at that $250,000 number.

First, we're talking about a "small business".  How far does $250,000 go for a small business?  Let's say you hire just 10 employees at minimum wage.  10 employees is still a "small" business, right?  Well, you've already surpassed that $250,000 limit just in payroll and Social Security taxes alone, and we haven't even started with rent, insurance, materials, utilites and so on.  Oh, and poor Joe still hasn't taken home a dime, but because he is the owner of this little fictional business, his taxes are going to go UP!  So, what's he to do?  He can't cut back on rent or other expenses.  All he can do is either raise his prices, lay people off, or move his company overseas.

If he raises prices, as most companies will do, WE ALL END UP PAYING FOR THE HIGHER TAXES!!!  So even though Obama claims to be cutting taxes for the "poor and middle class", those same people are the ones paying for the higher taxes.

If he lays people off, how is that good for the economy?

If he moves overseas... well, see above!

Human Nature Is...

...to be risk-averse. Call it survival instinct, fear of failure, or lack of confidence, the point is that we tend to not take risks.

Starting one's own business, seeking a new job or changing career path is a risky undertaking. To that end, when we do take that new risk, we do so with the underlying desire to gain the rewards of the risk we are taking.

Our current tax system is, in reality, designed to punish success as well as provide many forms of political opportunities. The most obvious political opportunity is to spout class warfare rhetoric and offer entitlements to gain votes from the less-well-off.

As I have stated elsewhere, government's role should be to promote the welfare of all. This should be accomplished by removing as much as possible impediments to success, business or otherwise. That means lowering if not removing taxes and other mandates that increase the cost of doing business and thus increases the level at which a business can turn the necessary profit to remain a viable business.
In other words, government should concentrate on providing equality of opportunity rather than equality of outcome.

Amen Wildcatter

I ran my own business for forty years and just keeping your head above water is a major accomplishment when things slow down.

God Complex

BigSpoon65

I agree with you Wildcatter, but our government is full of ambulance chasing lawyers who are completely addicted to the opiate of "POWER".  Their ability to play God and heal all that afflicts us poor common folk is dependant on "our" money to feed this crack addict we call our government.  To expect either party to willingly concede power is like expecting a crack or heroine addict to voluntarily surrender their drugs.  Both parties want our votes and our money, but not our opinions.  This latest bailout is the perfect example of this.  Legislators were receiving calls and emails that were in the neighborhood of 200 to 1 against the bailout.  Yet it passed anyway.  What happened to the will of the people?  Seems that the nanny-state government (that knows what is best for us) trumps the will of the people.

Conservative.....Because we can't all be on welfare!

"...to be risk-averse. Call

"...to be risk-averse. Call it survival instinct, fear of failure, or lack of confidence, the point is that we tend to not take risks."

Bullcrap. If that was the case, why the rise and appeal of extreme sports? Why do so many take drugs? Why so many bad drivers, not to mention those who drink and drive? Heck, driving my niece to school I see teenagers jumping into traffic and driving their cars at 60 miles per hour around sharp turns. People take risks all the time, hell the current ecnomic situtation is based on *risky* loans for chrissakes!!!

People only tend to not take risks when they are 100% sure it will pay off, otherwise my experience is all bets are off.

"I think it's hard to say

"I think it's hard to say that someone who makes less than $250,000 a year just isn't trying hard enough."

Why?  Is it not true in some cases? And even if it's not true, why should should someone over $250,000 pay because someone else is bad off? What's next, we'll kill everyone's parents so orphans won't feel so bad? If you're cut off for poverty is ANY number below $250,000 a year, why should those making $249,000 be exempt than?

"If all you had to do to be in the top 5% of earners in this country is work hard... well, it would be a lot higher than 5%."

How narrow, to focus only on the top 5%. A lot of those not in the top 5% are still quite wealthy. Are you implying those not without million or billion dollar incomes are all either poor or living uncomfortably?  Fortuantely most Americans define success in more realistic terms, not as making millions a year and anything below that is a failure. Because I hate to break it to you, 250,000 is NOT in the top 5%.

Joe's 15 minutes

Joe, don't let the bright lights of the hollymedia get to you. Stay with it my friend, make people think. You're doing a fine job.

Have you noticed the disconect between the MSM and us?

They have degreees from all the "right" universities.  They think they're smarter than us and therefore should take care of us.  Then that attitude is reinforced at their swank cocktail and dinner parties.

Then along comes Mr. Wurzelbacher and takes these clowns (who've never had to make a payroll, i.e. create a job) to school on how the real world works.

Good on ya', Joe.  Good on ya'!

JOE IS RIGHT, ONCE THEY DO NOT GET ENOUGH TAX $$ TO FULFILL ALL THESE HANDOUT PROGRAMS, IT MAY DROP TO 150/75/50/25 TILL THEY GET ENOUGH TO BUY MORE VOTES.

But lets say the $250,000.00 gets smarter and gives his wife a job, his children a job, and he backs his 250 down to whatever is under the mark. where does the tax $$$ come from now. BHO must drop it down lower & lower and lower. Joe is smarter and he adds his brothers and sisters, the mark is lower again- now everyone is paying more taxes.

and now Nancy wants to give us our money they should have never taken in the 1st place. are they nuts?

Joe hasn't been vetted yet...

The next thing you're going to hear about Joe -  from annonomous sources - is that he belongs to a renagade political party trying to get Ohio to secede from the U.S.

ledurchi

No, it will be that he is a member of the KKK and is trying to bring Obama down!

...AND...

...I heard from a reliable source that Joe's family was left at home while he selfishly pursued a career in the plumbing business!

Joe is my HERO!!!

This will resonate BIG TIME with us "little people"!!!

This will hit just like the "clinging to GOD and GUNS" statement by Bambi!!

Ster.

ps. Noel!!! Can you start a fourm on the OHIO Sec. of State appeal to the Supreme Court on voter verification!!!

Only John Stevens- LIBERAL - has to hear Emergency Appeals in his Region of juristiction!!

Ster

This will resonate BIG TIME with us "little people"!!!

I think you might be right Ster.  Alot of people who were unsure who to vote for will identify with him.  "He's one of us."

We can hope anyway!! : )

Regarding the tax

Regarding the tax stimulus:

Now that the Libs like Pelosi and others want ANOTHER "stimulus" package has it occurred to them that what they are doing with this is to essentially say:

"You know what to do with your money better than we do."

This begs the question "Why tax increases when you're admitting with these packages that the American people need more of their money to do with it as they please?"

So, let's ask Obamarx if he is for the stimulus package and follow it up with the above!

Why not just re-authorize

Why not just re-authorize the Bush tax cuts? Leave them in place and operating as intended.

Oh, I forgot, Harry, Barry and Nancy, must be the saviors of the middle Class.

Hmmm, Father, Son and Holy Spirit..........sorry, I let that train of thought go to my fingers. I'll repent!

Obama's just being "fair"

Obama's plan is Trickle Up Welfare.

regarding Barack Obama's tax plan - I never received a job from a poor person.

It's a shame Chris Matthews isn't poor

He could have Tingle Up Welfare.

Michael Savage called it

Michael Savage called it "Trickle Up Poverty" yesterday on his show.

I'll tell you what, Diane

Why don't you people, who get paid millions to ask stupid questions, and your multi-millionaire celebrity limo-lib friends (who love to tell us lowly fly-overites who selfish and ignorant we all are) bear the brunt of an extremely aggressive tax policy and leave small businessmen like Joe alone.  Show us how you can spread the wealth around.  Maybe, if you spread enough wealth around some of those people you're trying to help will move into your exclusive neighborhoods and you can take them for rides on your yachts and in your limos.  You can enthrall them with you wisdom.

C'mon, Diane, step up to the plate; be patriotic; give up some of that wealth for your fellow Americans.

I think Joe is the GOPs

I think Joe is the GOPs October surprise...at least I'm hoping it is. Go get 'em, Joe!!

Joe had better get ready

Because he is going to receive a trashing from the tolerant party of the people that will make us think that he is related to Sarah Palin.

How much you wanna make a

How much you wanna make a bet that the media will try to tie him to the Klan or the Skin-heads; something racial? I'm almost certain he's getting some sort of background "check" by the Libs as we speak. Joe, stay strong! Get ready for the S&&t Storm like the one they delivered to Sarah Palin...

I hope McCain wins. I remember the Carter years, and all BO is is a Carter of a different color.

Over at Politico

They are calling him a Republican plant.

You see????????? It was

You see????????? It was just a matter of time. It took only a couple of hours for the MSM to flush this dude right down the drain...

I'm so sorry for him. I was hoping that the extra exposure would help his new business. Maybe it still will.

The MSM are just a bunch of Jackals, I swear.

»→ Republican plant

Geraldine Ferraro said the same thing on FOX.

She said he was definitely a Republican because of his stand on guns.

Underdog & Pitbull 08

Let us not forget...

That it was Obama who told his own supporters to get in peoples' faces.  When the shoe is on his foot, his supporters have to trash the person in his face.  They cannot stand being challenged.

 "How much you wanna make

"How much you wanna make a bet that the media will try to tie him to the Klan or the Skin-heads; something racial?"

It's even worse, they'll paint him as....gasp....rich and successful.

Obama's Economic plan: more taxes, more spending, more regulation. Prosperity here we come.

Quite true, Paul

Joe (Biden) on Joe the Plumber.

Such a nice and tolerant thing for the VP candidate to say.

In his own words (19 seconds):  This man is qualified to be VP?

In his own words (28 seconds):  Obama's change.....SOCIALISM.

I suspect the "Truth Squad"

I suspect the "Truth Squad" has already landed in Toledo and is currently rooting through this guy's garbage.

The people who know about these things

By a solid majority, the people who are at the front of foreign policy (namely, the military) favor McCain. Or, at least, they prefer McCain to Obama. I suspect it's because they have to pay the penalty for policy, and they have to live with it realistically.

Domestically, the engine of the economy is small businesses, and here we have Joe the Plumber -- a guy who is creating a small business. He knows it's more than just putting up a sign. He has to make payroll, manage insurance, comply with regulations, and so on. This is the guy who drives the economy. If we're going to recover at all, never mind quickly, this is the guy we're counting on. And what do we discover? Obama's plan hits him directly. I don't know how Joe the Plumber feels about McCain, but this guy doesn't like Obama's plan.

  • The media favors Obama. The media can play with these issues, because they really don't feel the effects. Foreign policy is just a pawn. Tax policy is just a puck. They don't have to live day to day with the real life effects.
  • For the people who have to live with the effects day to day, like Joe the Plumber, they favor McCain.

That's got to mean something. Maybe this thing isn't really over yet.

Obama lied to Joe

Hey Noel .. also..

.. right off the top, Obama just out and out lied to Joe. Obama said, "we haven't given a break to folks who make less." He was comparing "them folks" to wealthier folks - like himself, who did receive tax breaks.

For the record, the Bush administration did in fact give poorer folks significant tax breaks -  the 15% lower bracket was cut to 10% (a 50% reduction); child credits were increased significantly; and the marriage penalty tax was fixed - and it helped a ton. Middle class worker's - still those making much less than "rich folks like Obama" received rather a significant reduction in tax liability. Off the top of my head - I'd guess that the average family of 4 with a combined adjusted gross income in the low 100,000's (Obama was talking about these folks here) are paying an easy $3,500 less in federal income taxes today, compared to 2000.

Obama lied to the plumber. We did give breaks to the folks who make less.

Also, I'm a bit curious about the capital gains tax savings that Obama is talking about giving Joe's new business, if it does well? What's the capital gain here? Is he going to sell that business?
(;~> gary

Gary, Wer're squarely in

Gary, Wer're squarely in the middle class and Bush's tax cuts saved us $2,500 a year easy, maybe more if I actually calculated it.  We've been lied to so long with the "tax cuts for the rich" mantra that most people buy this malarky.  Too many of us have lost sight of the fact that we all got tax cuts under the Bush plan, primarily because the media and Democrats want it that way.

Another thing I find frustrating is that Obama is painting the last eight years as some kind of disaster; and the nation appears to be buying this lie, too.  The truth is that most of the last eight years has seen record low unemployment, solid growth and job creation, with low interest rates.  The energy costs increase started hampering the economy and the mortgage crisis meltdown unhinged things.  The thing is both of these fiascos can be directly traced to liberal policies; yet it is Bush's fault.

Smart, smartypants. And. Bush inherited a crash..

yea. Oh, and we forgot. There were the 2001 tax rebates and the 2008 stimulus (rebates). Everyone got them as well.

On your second point. Here's my beef - and only defending Bush up to a point - but it's a big point. Contrary to what the D's all along have been saying, and Obama, Pelosi, and Hillary focused on the lie in recent weeks and days (with the MSM in the cheering section), Bill Clinton did not leave Bush a smoothly running booming economy with some $5 trillion in ever increasing budget surpluses. Period.

When Bush came in:

Broad market had reached it's peak in last 1997. Clinton camp missed it's corporate profit projections for the last 8 quarters - each one getting worse. missed the last one by 44%.  Think here: one can easily start connecting this to how off the surplus projections were going to be.

The dot.com bubble (what the late 90's economy was all about - only about) crashed in March, 2000. Some $8 Trillion of excess valuation was to come out of the markets. Thousands of companies would be de-listed, thousands would go out of business, many more would downsize, millions of Americans would loose their jobs and health insurance and their life savings.

The federal budget would be back in deficit spending by 2002, regardless of whom would have been president. The only economic question for voters to ponder, politically here, is whether Bush did the right things, or not, to bring us out of the recession he inherited.

When Bush came into office, gasoline prices had increased some 56% in 2000 (+/-); new jobless claims were skyrocketing from the low in May, 2000, profits were falling;  manufacturing activity (PMI Composite index) had been falling since late 1999;  GDP growth had gone flat in 2000, incomes rolled over in mid 2000; peak industrial production had fallen vertically since it's peak in Jan. 2000; retail sales of manufacturing and trade was falling since it's peak in Jan, 2000; Consumer price index had been rising since 1998, it's low; household debt burden had been steeply rising since 1995; national trade deficit continued to make new records; housing constructions (starts) had been falling since the beginning of 1999; capital spending was sharply falling off starting the 2nd Q of 2000 - to the end of the year; and holiday retail industrial sales increases fell from 8.1% in 1999 to 1.3% in 2000, a big slowdown.

(;~> Gary

Joe the plumber is going down the drain

If Obama is elected Joe will be found guilty of some trump charge with taxes or other and held up as an example of the evil rich.

He won't have to wait

He already has people looking into his past.  Go read the comments at Politico.com

Jed.. Yea, I hear you..

I'm a bit worried about Joe, also. If he were like most of the little indepenent plumbers, carpenters, contractors, painters, etc., I run into - a lot of them do most of their work on a cash basis and don't report the income. Joe, however, sounds like he's running a legit business - after all, he's looking at buying out another business and expanding.

Oh, I missed lawyers - a lot of lawyers who defend shady folks, like drug dealers, etc., take a lot of their pay in cash also. Actually ran into one in - well, let's just say a very nice area in on Long Island - I'm guessing that he's putting something in the order of a clean $1/2 mil under the mattress each and every year - certainly not paying taxes on it. Naturally, these kind of folks were really pissed off about tax breaks for the rich.  (;~> gary

BHO supporters are going to be so disappointed...

BHO supporters are going to be so disappointed when that even smaller group of people who are supposed to finance the rest of the country decide to move to another country or close their businesses.

They are going to be so disappointed that their supposed "healthcare right" doesn't guarantee that they will get good healthcare. That the government will not be able to hire everyone forever. That the options for services and goods all over the place are going to be reduced because only a few companies will stay here or survive.

There will be no wealth to redistribute because all wealth creation sources will be driven out of the country.

Why can't there be a

Why can't there be a candidate who specifically addresses the concerns of small business? I don't mean the "small businesses" that employ 250 people where you see the candidates make their perfunctory tours in lab coats or hard hats. I mean the small businesses - plumbers, small contractors, mom and pop retailers, people running businesses out of their homes, etc., that employ so many overall. If there was a candidate who addressed their problems, he or she would win a lot of support, as small businesses cut across all kinds of lines - gender, race, political, religious, etc.

This doesn't sound right to

This doesn't sound right to me:

Sawyer: "If people making $250,000 should not be taxed additionally -- it's, by
the way, three percent, from 36 percent to 39 percent under Sen.
Obama's plan -- if those people should not be taxed additionally, even
though they're in the top five percent of America"

Is it accurate to say that people making $250,000 are, in  general, in the top five percent of America? I don't think so.

Don't lose America

Diane Sawyer seemed a bit snobbish didnt she.  She was implying that he shouldn't care because he doesnt make over $250,000 anyway.  Joe, like most Americans who don't make that much get the point.  Obama saying "spread the wealth" is un-American.  Americans do not want money from anyone else except what they have earned themselves.  Most Americans don't view themselves as charity cases like Obama views us.  We don't want handouts, we don't want "rich" people's money. We just want the opportunity to work hard, keep our jobs and make money for ourselves. Obama will make the American dream unattainable.

I'm not going to work and allow my tax money to go to illegal imigrants who don't pay taxes.   There is no way to follow the money trail once he raises taxes. We will never know whether its my income tax money or Trump's tax dollars will go to the 'tax-break' to illegal immigrants who don't pay taxes .  I'm always going to assume its mine and I will never accept that.    If we want to give it to charity, we will. Americans as a nation give more to charity than the government ever will and have helped more people in the private sector than the government does as well.

Joe the plumber speaks for all Americans that just want to succeed by working hard, not by sitting on their asses and waiting for govt handouts.

Joe understands the

Joe understands the American dream. Obama does not!

President Ronald Reagan - 1985

Joe Rocks!  I'm

Joe Rocks!  I'm wondering..  does anybody have links they can share that might shed some truthful light on this magical $250,000 threshhold?  I have a hard time believing, in terms of income distribution, that there are that many families out there that make that much..   on average...  and it seems to me that BHO's whole policy is aimed at striking it rich, in terms of tax revenues, on the backs of the $250,000 and up, the so-called rich, and I just don't think it's there. Which makes his whole premise bogus. What will happen, is just what Joe says, BHO will discover that there isn't such an untapped cache of extra taxable income in this $250,000 and up bracket and so he'll just start bottom fishing...  so to say.

 That's the point everyone

That's the point everyone is missing as they dream of the handouts Obama is promising them. The numbers don't add up. There aren't enough rich people to pay for everything he wants to give people. And when companies take their business offshore, or go underground, there will be even less money to pay for it all.

Obama will be an absolute disaster for this country.

Obama's Economic plan: more taxes, more spending, more regulation. Prosperity here we come.

Sawyer's Voice is like a BUZZ SAW in the night

OMG. Sawyer's voice has never been more annoying than in this interview. I'm so sick of these media types twisting things around for BHO. He's stated it clear and simple that anyone making over 250k is rich. That's a heap of shit. here in this interview, she changes the amount to 1 to 5 million. the only problem Obama didn't say 1 to 5 million he said 250 k.

Mr.L

Detrimental to the American Dream

I remember Obama in the debate said something like most small businesses dont make more than $250,000. So he gives no incentive or reward to be a successful business and break the $250,000 barrier.  He just want to penalize them for it.  I also like he just determines that $250,000 is somehow rich all of a sudden.  I make no where near that and I will still defend the right of my fellow citizens and their businesses to succeed.  Obama and these socialist ideas are just detrimental to the American Dream. We are not 'like' Europe, Cuba or Venezuela and there is a reason for that.

Joe...

better get him a good lawyer to help with that IRS audit if BO wins.

Rolling in Dough

Yeah she tried to throw millions around so he would agree with her but it didnt work.  Good for Joe. The filthy rich millionaires really couldnt care less about taxes because they are just rolling in dough.  The sports players that get 3 million dollar a year contracts couldn't care less about taxes either.

Still, that isnt even what this issue is about and Obama can't squirm their way out of this one. It's $250.000. Clearly Obama wants to prevent people from getting rich while attempting to redistribute the wealth to the 'less fortunate' because its not fair that people make more money??  Maybe those 'less fortunate' don't deserve anything because they are lazy and unambitions. They will leech of other people's American Dream and success courtesy of Obama.

Diane proves again

That liberals just can't do math.

She states that the increase in tax rates at the $250K is only 3%.

Um....no it's not.  An additional 3% in the tax rate equates to an 8.3% increase in the amount of taxes paid, Diane.

Sheesh!

In his own words (19 seconds):  This man is qualified to be VP?

so joe has a brain

I don't jive with the fact checkers after the debate. Thay said that 98% of small business owners make less than 250k. That unfortunately isn't how income tax works. It's gross not net. Net most don't, but with gross that number is 64%. See when you add on the property, assets, and how much you make before your expenses it's eating alot of people. Obama's numbers is for net income after everything is deducted. But unfortunately the IRS doesn't do there math like that. nbc,abc and cnn all got it wrong, and I'm suppose to beleve that when they get a basic tax question wrong, and wrong for every debate. O i forgot there bias so it's ok. like i said either he need a accountant or the news needs to be less bias.
I just had a revelation, how he said it business OWNERS, he's right most small business owners don't, but the businesses themselves do. So he's not lieing. of course he's not telling the whole truth. I get his ways now, owners get a credit, there businesses get 25% increase. it's true joe the plummer is going out of business. but joe is getting a tax break, unfortunately he has no job, so he'll be needing it.

I see, Joe's a Republican plant

but of course those shouting slurs and deaththreats at McC & P rallies were not Liberal plants.

Actually, I believe "Liberal plant" is in Websters next to the word Skunk Weed.

"All generalizations are false, including this one.” Mark Twain

I thought weed was a

I thought weed was a liberal plant, not Joe.

My husband owns a small

My husband owns a small plumbing business in a small town, and even though he only has one employee, the 250k is not an unreasonable amount for a small business to pull in. But that is the business income, out of which comes taxes, materials, payroll, insurance, and all those little necessary incidentals. Our personal income is less that 25% of that, but, alot of the income we have to claim as personal is paid out for taxes...example: because of what the business makes, our quarterly taxes might be $2500. federal, so we have to take an owners draw for that amount just to pay the taxes, above and beyond what we give ourselves in a normal (non-tax month)... do that 4 times a year and it looks like you did pretty well, but really, look how much went to the government...and BO wants to tack more onto that, sorry, but he has never worked as hard in a week as my hard-working hubby does in a day.

Go Joe the Plumber! Speak up every chance you get!

Hello dream

I'm in the same boat. You should have mentioned the long hours. Don't expect all salaried people to understand gross and net, profit and loss, etc. One of my favorite movies was "Back to School".

Yes, the long hours too, 11

Yes, the long hours too, 11 & 12 hour days, 6 days a week.

Materials he had to pay for to do a job, that once in awhile, we get a deadbeat that won't pay...so he eats the costs on that...

Higher cost of gas for the trucks to travel to jobs, and higher cost of materials also because everyone passes their own costs on to the one who needs what they are selling...I could go on....

0bama SAID REVENUE, NOT PROFIT

Dream..   thank you!

Dream..   thank you!  This is a great example of how the terminology can get abused such that nobody is going to understand, except those like you who have deal with the day to day realities of a small biz. Certainly BHO types don't get it.  From his perspective, he doesn't need to understand it.  He's already sold this mythical $250k number to way too many voters.  It's just like that magic $700 billion bailout number..  it was snatched out of thin air.

Dream..  hang in there!

Biz terminology -Revenue

Biz terminology -

Revenue - essentially this is the price customers pay a business for goods and services

Operating expenses - cost to the business of providing goods and services

Profit or Loss  - Difference between the two numbers above. If a business is well managed and they actually have a positive number at this point, it will probably be a single digit % of Revenue.

Oh, and then come the taxes..

Now, exactly which component is BHO talking about when he throws that $250k benchmark out there...  the Revenue component or the P&L component?

When he was talking to Joe

When he was talking to Joe the Plumber, he said revenue. Joe - don't buy the business. It is a money loser if revenues are taxed.

Joe the Hobbit?

Will Joe the Plumber be Joe the Hobbit who tossed the One Ring into the liberal flames of Mt. Doom?

Someone needs to explain

Someone needs to explain

Someone needs to explain free enterprise and running a business  to Obama the H.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

Someone needs to explain to

Someone needs to explain to BaxterJ the T that "progressive" taxation harms the poor and middle class by fraudulently claiming to only affect the "super rich".  No doubt BaxterJ the T will ignore the facts and continue to marinate in his invincible ignorance.

simple math

Someone needs to explain simple math to these libs...

36% of $250,000 = $90,000 in taxes.

36% of say $30,000 = $10,800 in taxes.

Ummm, libs.... same tax rate does not equal same tax amount paid.

Next Up[?

After the successful run of the McCain / Palin administration, (I think he'll only go with one-term) I say we go with the following:

Palin / "Joe The Plumber" 2012!

It's nice to see the

It's nice to see the average American giving an elitist snob like Diane "Mr. Bill" Sawyer a proper education.  Of course, the only substance her head will absorb is more collagen.

wow Diane

Obama's plan is a lie that pretends to be for the "middle class", another term from marx, but it is in fact not. The way of a marxist is to pretend to be for the middle class and then step on them once power is seized and that is what Obama's plan is going to do. Anyone that believes Obama is going to cut taxes for 95% of workers is a brainless idiot.

Because 38% of Americans don't pay income taxes that means most of that 38% is going to get welfare checks in the mail. Now how is it possible for the upper 5% to fund a trillion dollars in new spending and welfare for 38% of our population?

According to the Tax Policy Center, Obama's tax plan alone would increase government spending by 68.4 billion dollars per year and the best part is many taxpayers making $20,000-$50,000 a year would in fact be helping the top 5% pay for the welfare.

His plan would also eliminate income taxes for 15 million households, which means the number of people who pay no income tax would go from 38% to 48%.

From CNSnews.com:

"Obama’s biggest refund, and the one most likely to go to non-taxpayers, is his Making Work Pay credit, which would give $500-$1000 to everyone making under $200-250,000 a year.  This proposal, which the Tax Policy Center says is “intended to offset the regressivity of payroll taxes,” would cost taxpayers $323.4 billion during Obama’s first term, if elected."

Exactly! Taxes on the

Exactly! Taxes on the wealthy trickle down and cost everybody. Not only that, but the baseline for what is considered "poor" and "middle class" has gone up and up, so therefore his taxes are of the sneaky marginal and glass ceiling variety.

It's a good sign the

It's a good sign the "average guy" has some kind of voice in this campaign, and that he has an intelligent challenge to Obama's tax policy.

It's AMAZING how everyone

It's AMAZING how everyone keeps letting Obama get away with that whopper too.

My own tax refunds went up by a useful amount once Bush's tax cuts went into law. Why in the world do we keep letting this guy get away with telling us that we DIDN'T get that money??

Hmm. Diane Sawyer defending socialism.

Color me surprised.

It is really disconcerting how completely disconnected the MSM has become from ordinary Americans.

Sad that so many Americans still haven't figured this out.

Joe the Plumber for President!

I love how liberals trot

I love how liberals trot out the Robin Hood analogy, it's idiotic for two reasons:

1. Just because I don't like what someone is doing does not mean I get to violate their rights. I hate the things Chris Matthews says, this does not mean I get to kill him because I find his statements immoral. This is not the Middle Ages in Feudal England, just because you don't like that someone is rich does not mean their wealth is up for grabs because you think someone else deserves it more. That is nothing more than forcing morality on people.

2. For the most part, Robin Hood was fighting mainly against *government* greed and high taxes. In the legends he stole from despots like Prince John and the tax-happy Sherieff of Nottingham and those who got rich off of their largesse namely nobles and others with entitlements, NOT large business owners and people with private wealth.
