Barack Obama now has his own channel on Dish Network running his ads as well as other biological propaganda.
Think I'm kidding?
It's called "Barack Obama's Plan For America," and is Dish channel 73.
Apparently, this has caught many Dish subscribers -- other than me, that is!!! -- by surprise as just reported by Politico's Ben Smith:
Three readers from different parts of the country email that Channel 073-00 on the Dish Network is now labeled OBAMA. ("What is up with Sen. Obama having his own channel?" asks a St. Louis reader.) The channel plays his two-minute ad laying out his economic plan on a loop, over and over. [...]
The channel's appearance has provoked scorn and alarm on conservative blogs, though, and some discussion on a forum for Satellite TV aficionados, where one user writes that a Dish Network executive emailed to reassure the user that it "is paid advertising by the Obama campaign and is not an endorsement of Senator Obama by DISH Network" and will broadcast through November 4.
A spokeswoman for EchoStar, the Dish Network's parent company, didn't respond immediately to phone and email inquiries abotut the channel.

But, it looks like a paid ad on the channel guide. I agree listing it as OBAMA is pretty odd, but maybe they paid for that, too. I'll grant it's strange, and more than a little egotistical and weird, IMO. Running constantly from now until Nov. 4th? Superweird, even.
But, in the end, it's just another campaign ad, albeit in a new form. Maybe you see it differently, but that's my snapshot opinion.

I find it sad all in all....

October 2, 2008 - 08:07 ET by SpockI called Dish a couple of days ago and asked how I could get Fox added to my current plan (since it shows up as green on the guide saying it is available for instant upgrade) and I was told that the only way I could get Fox News was if I subscribed to their "America's Top 200" package (one of their most expensive).
After arguing a bit more and getting nowhere, I told'em they could shove it and that I would be switching to Direct TV instead.
Now with the Obama channel (already blocked, thanks for the h/t) I think I'll move more quickly in making that "change" =)

It's also for the channel surfers to be constantly reminded that Barrys the "guy".
Don't be surprised if his new campaign ads are constantly featured on the station. Someone said his economic plan was the one one there now, but I bet that they'll be more as we get closer to election day.
It also targets a demographic that he won't reach otherwise. Some bumpkin out here in my neck of the wood(what, didn't everyone know that the state flower of WV is the satelite dish. :-} ) will see Obama on their guide and stop to check it out. They then get the latest campaign ad and it WILL sway some voters. I think the numbers will be small, but we all remember how close the 2000 election was and so will Barrys people.
Also, the regulations governing this sorta thing are vague. So it's a platform that Barrys people have a lot of leeway with.
I think it also shows how much money he has to spend. I mean, renting your own satelite TV station for 5 weeks, that ain't cheap.
I think it's really not that bad of an idea, but talk about Cult of Personality, geez.

I have DISH and there are about 10 channels I watch out of 200+......FoxNews being the one on most of the time, FoodNetwork and HGTV in a tie for 2nd. Besides, it's in such an odd spot on the lineup that I would never have found it had I not caught it on NB.
Plus, who's going to sit and watch the same ad run over and over? I think it a total waste of money on his part.

I forgot who the sponsor was but I answsered the questions and DO remember Obama was placed over Clinton and others whom I KNOW better represented my views. Maybe someone would like to look into this further...I can not presently.
I guess it is legal but it sure doesn't seem right...then again, it's probably not much different than CNN/MSNBC -- I just can't make myself watch it...I tried, I just can't...tonight, at least.
