Imagine for a moment the race card had been used during the Republican presidential nomination process, and the United Nations was sending an envoy to investigate racism in America. Do you think the media would report it?
Probably 24 hours a day, seven days a week until every person in the country had heard about it, right?
Well, the U.N. announced on Friday that it is sending its "Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance" to visit our country from May 19 until June 6.
Although Reuters reported this at 2:48 PM EDT Friday, and strongly suggested the investigation is due to racism in the Democrat presidential campaign, LexisNexis and Google searches identified no other American news outlet covering this story. Not one!
Here was the official U.N. announcement:
GENEVA-- The United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, Mr. Doudou Diène, will undertake a country visit to the United States of America from 19 May to 6 June 2008 at the invitation of the U.S. Government.
The Special Rapporteur will visit the cities of Washington, New York, Chicago, Omaha, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico to gather first-hand information on issues related to racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance. He is scheduled to hold meetings with representatives of the Government, both at national and local levels, and with members of the legislative and judiciary branches. Discussions will also be held with non-governmental organizations, community members, representatives of political parties, academics and other organizations and individuals working in the field of racism and discrimination.
The Special Rapporteur will submit a final report on the visit for consideration at a forthcoming session of the Human Rights Council in 2009.
Here's how Reuters saw it (emphasis added):
A special U.N. human rights investigator will visit the United States this month to probe racism, an issue that has forced its way into the race to secure the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. [...]
Race has become a central issue in the U.S. election cycle because Sen. Barack Obama, the frontrunner in the battle for the Democratic nomination battle, stands to become the country's first African American president.
His campaign has increased turnout among black voters but has also turned off some white voters in a country with a history of slavery and racial segregation.
Seems newsworthy, wouldn't you agree? Yet, besides Reuters, from what I can tell, not one American press outlet reported this annoucement.
Would media have boycotted this if a black candidate had run for the Republican nomination, and race had been so prominent in the campaign?
Yes, that was a rhetorical question.
*****Update: Drudge linked to the Reuters article at 11:11 AM EDT on Friday. I don't know how it did that, as Reuters claims the piece was published 3 1/2 hours later, but there it is.

May 17, 2008 - 18:04 ET by jdhawkThe first thing that strikes me about this news item is who the hell does the UN think it is? This is an organization of 190 countries of which over 100, on a daily basis, don't just committ contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance. They torture and murder their citizens.
Given the above, I don't see the UN having the time to even visit the US. Unless, of course, they have a small army that is dedicated to this function that we somehow have not heard about.
The second thing that strikes me about this news item is - UN, go f**k yourself. Of all the worthless, good for nothing (except bilking the US tax payer of their hard earned cash) organizations on the face of the planet this has got to be it.

These daily "Democrats Are Racists"
May 17, 2008 - 20:08 ET by JerThese daily "Democrats Are Racists" reminders are really becoming tedius.
I think everyone here is well aware that the "party of Lincoln" was once the political preference for the overwhelming majority of blacks. That was one of the reasons--indeed a significant one--why the South remained monolithically Democratic for generations. Well, brace yourself for a startling revelation: Things change!
Here's a quick and admittedly simplistic overview:
During the 1930's and thereafter, FDR's New Deal policies, along with his wife's active and emphatic support for civil rights, generated a positive reaction among blacks. Truman's push for anti-discrimination legislation and integration of the armed forces resulted in a splintering of the Democrats in 1948 and the formation of Strom Thurmond's Dixiecrat party. Consequently, many blacks began viewing the national Democrats in one manner [favorably] and the southern Democrats in another [generally unfavorably]. Still, in the 1960 election, Nixon received a substantial per centage of the black vote [I think close to half]. But, during the ensuing years--with Kennedy saying the things they wanted to hear, and Johnson getting those things done, huge numbers of the remaining black Republicans switched their party allegiance. And there was a corresponding shift within the ranks of conservative southern whites Democrats who were disenchanted with the perceived "liberal" takeover of their party. This disaffection was successfully exploited by Nixon's "southern strategy" in 1968. These events permanently fractured the old Democratic New Deal coalition, sent millions of conservative southerners, e.g. Strom Thurmond, stampeding to the Republican party, and assured that the Democratic party would be the new "home" for blacks for the forseeable future.
Today, neither the Republican party, nor the Democratic party is "racist". And it is a noxious slander to say so.

May 17, 2008 - 20:27 ET by ThisnThatLook at these code words:
Xenophobia and related intolerance - The UN wants to know why we don't want illegal aliens in this country. Look for interviews of Mexican support groups and poor farm hand afraid to identify themselves because of Mean America.
Turned off some white voters in a country with a history of slavery and racial segregation - This will be a condemnation of America. They will probably ask black voters why 90% of them are forced to vote for Obama.
The UN is looking at this as an opportunity to stick it to the US, and then to try to enact sanctions against us.

Lol with your Vatican invasion.
And, wonder - how would Benny and the Jets feel abut illegal immigration if the one mile square Papal Estate was in El Paso?
Or Matomoros?
All depends on who's ox is getting gored.

Why the heck is the UN coming to my country to investigate anything?????
Why aren't we kicking them out of this great country and no longer funding their socialist/communist ways?????
Screw this thing all the way around...
I smell loads of BS...

But I feel the way you do.
We should kick them to another planet or at the very least to the other side of the world,
AND we should get the hell out.
Delsa... I have always

May 17, 2008 - 23:15 ET by Clear thinkerThis is not news to me. For those of you that have read my tirades, you know how I feel about the racists in the Democrat Party. I would give this even more credence if it was an agency other than a UN sponsored one.
I have said over and over and over.... the racists in this country are mostly on the left.

May 18, 2008 - 09:23 ET by motherbeltIf he concludes with an unfavorable report and the UN starts discussing "sanctions" I hope President Bush gives them 6 months to completely vacate the UN building before the Marines move and confiscate everything.
