Keith Olbermann Coined General ‘Betray Us’ Not MoveOn

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

While right-thinking people across the fruited plain cast their anger at MoveOn for its disgraceful ad placed in Monday's New York Times, "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann should be sharing the dishonor.

As adroitly identified at Olbermann Watch Wednesday: "Long before the moveon [sic] ‘Betray Us' advertisement, back on August 16th, the infamous, deplorable Keith Olbermann began his ‘newscast' in the usual fashion, bellowing the opening spiel."

Taken directly from MSNBC.com's transcript that evening (emphasis added):

Which of these stories will you be talking about tomorrow? The Petraeus report, less Petraeus, more betrayaeus (ph). The definitive assessment of the surge will not only not be written by General Petraeus, it will not be presented by General Petraeus. Secretaries Gates and Rice will be the messengers. The White House insists General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker will be there to testify.

Furthermore, as he began his report, the picture to the above-right was displayed.

Does this make Olbermann the Worst Person in the World?

Betray Us

This is it folks. This is all the Libs can and ever will do. Come up with stupid names for people they hate for no reason. t blows my mind why these people are taken seriously anymore. There USED to be a level that wasn't crossed such as calling a Commander on the ground that was at first praised by the Dems a liar, but times have certainly changed, and election cycles have started much earlier all because the dems need to 'take the country back'. Politics wasn't always a full contact sport, but the Dems don't care anymore. If they don't agree with it it, it's a lie. Period.

This is it folks. This is all the Libs can and ever will do. Come up with stupid names for people they hate for no reason -SSS

True, Spiff. Petraeus=BetrayUs. Isn't that just SO clever??? I guess they've seen too many reruns of "Heartbreak Ridge."

Libs cannot argue without descending into school-yard taunts. Any day now I expect one of them to sing "Nanny-nanny-boo-boo". If it's not the stupid name-calling, it's making fun of someone's weight or manner of dress. Oh, and then they have to tell you how everyone they know agrees with them, and no one really likes you.

What's the Diff?

MoveOn - Olbermann - Matthews - ABC - CBS - NBC - CNN - Al Jazeera - the DNC - OBL -The Communist Party of America - The Oprah Winfrey Show - Sesame Street....they are all the same: Propagators of Anti-American, Anti-Freedom and Anti-Christian propaganda.

Advertisers

mattm: Can you, or maybe someone else, come up with some kind of a national advertisers list that are supporting Olbemann's (don't know the name of the show) or Chris Matthew's Hardball?

Don't you think that it is time to start a wave of Boycotting accross the nation? I think that these two idiots would be a good place to start.

Now, I understand that, with them being on cable, that a lot of the advertisers are local but they can be affected right along with the big national boys.

Don't you think that we should start voting with our pocketbooks?

I don't know

But these guys might be able to do it.

Exactly what branch of the

Exactly what branch of the armed services did Keith Olbermann serve in that he has the right to  defame a highly decorated and accomplished General? He is a prep school punk who was not even good in sports broadcasting.

Not Just Olbie, But...

...what are the (military) qualifications of any of the Democrats (Reid, Pelosi, et al)  who have been critical of or questioning the integrity of the General and Ambassador?

Just my $0.02

Bravo!

Bravo to both of you above for hitting that point!  The Democrats love to bring up other people's lack of military experience when it suits them.  But right now, that's not necessary; they are eminently qualified to criticize Gen. Petraeus and the current military plans.

As an aside: I got a kick out of Biden's "I love you, I love you" remark.  You just know he was thinking "I'm still going to cut your $%^&'s off."

I figured it this way motherbelt

If the libs rule is no comment on the war unless you're signed up and over there, they cannot comment on politics unless they're a politician.

Or they can't be a war protester until they've been a human shield for Saddam.

Newscasters don't have to be

Newscasters don't have to be military experts to criticize the war, just like politicians who start it don't have to be experts either.

Correction

And the politicians who start the war listen to the military experts, newscasters refuse to.

Wildcatter1980

If they're not a human shield they can shut up because they don't know what they're talking about.

(it's naptime and magic wand is coming around I've got to go)

Helen the Bully

When not in Washington, I hear Helen Thomas walks all the way to the MSNBC studios every day to kick Olbermann's ass and take his lunch money.

Poor sap. You'd think he'd just use a debit card.

Windbag Express

It really irritates me that this windbag has been added to the NBC lineup of commentators for the NFL.  he has no place on the halftime show, and as long as he is part of it, I refuse to watch Sunday Night Football.  I love Madden and Michaels, but I can (and will) do without.

I have been trying to find a way to Email the NFL, Madden, Michaels, anyone, to express my disgust, but no luck.

Yep

Yep, mentalrush; you make my case from a previous post. Lets start getting to these people in a financial way.

I just knew it would take

I just knew it would take the sheer genius of Olbermann to come up with a name that clever (mature, too)...

Remember Neal, it's news host or news anchor Keith Olbermann.

He's a straight shooting journalist who leaves his own political views outside of the newsroom.

As he and Phil Griffin and MSNBC and NBC repeatedly tell us.

Well, I guess Moveon and Keith Olbermann are a little more relevant than most people thought. Glad they are using "swift-boat" tactics; makes things even :0)

Glad they are using "swift-boat" tactics; makes things even :0)

So, "swift-boat tactics" (as you call them) are okay when your side does it?

And exactly what side is Olbermann on? He's a news anchor and not a member of an advocacy organization or political group.

Do you also think it's appropriate for news anchors to "swift-boat" people they disagree with?

mb,

For us, "swift boat tactics" was revealing the truth about a presidential candidate, who pumped up his own war record for political gain -when it suited him. For these liberal punks, in this case, "swift boat tactics" mean immaturily coming up with a innappropriate, totally disconnected phrase, because it rhymes with an honorable general's name - then clumsily trying to use it to discredit him.

Ubermann

Ubermann could not handle being in the military. Socialist views are not welcomed to myself and my fellow soldiers. Bottom line... the General deserves our respect for his service to his country and the drive by's should step up and if they have proof that he is "cooking the books" then prove it. If the MSM and the Democratic party would put just half of the effort into supporting and trying to win this war as they do trying to defeat Bush, we would have no problem. Ubermann used the backdrop of Ground Zero, on the ann. of that terrible day, to bark on the war in Iraq, have his dumbass journalists of Newsweek bellow their insane outlook on the war, and accuse Rudy of playing politics with Sept 11. Keith, have someone one to debate you and prove your theories. Also, on his show yesterday he had his worst person bit and it was Repulicans, Leibermann and fellow journalists who received the snub. While Bin Laden praised one of the murderous bastards that helped kill almost 3,000 innocent people. Yet Uber thought that he should not make the list. Sick. "This the 1,583 day of stupidity of Keith Olbermann".

Good Lord! Please let this

Good Lord! Please let this be a short fuse to self-destruct for these people ...

Beet Tray!

The word "betray", though cleaver when used in place of Petraeus, does not fit the honorable General.

However, "betray" does fit nearly every member of the 109th congress and those who took their place in the current congress. The betrayal comes from their lack of leadership and the objectification of mother courage for failing to act on what is right for our great nation; instead of for their floundering affiliations.

The Democrats promised to move our nation in a "Nude Errection." But, the closest they've come to that has been from their attempt to strip us of our sovoureignty by offering our property over to foreign nationals. Their mantra is, "But we were all once immigrants." True. But we were willing to play and die for the same team. That's why we are different. My ancesters didn't expect anything, but, a chance to prove their allegiance.

Now, when a confederacy of dunces stand on the Senate floor and tell me not to believe a single word that a decorated man is about to say. I feel an even deeper betrayal. 9/11 has created numerous heros ... it's a shame that the 110th congress has garnered so few.

With saddened heart,

Mrs. William Jefferson Rodham Clinton has joined the dunce list with this gem, “I think that the reports you provide to us really require the willing suspension of disbelief.”

Were she a revolutionary, she would have asked, "what do you mean the British are coming ... I can't see them. Therefor the information must be wrong." Yet, she wants the chief responsibility of leading our armies; hence The Commander in Chief(?).

Betray us

Soldiers have been calling him that for years.  I'm just saying....

I'd like to see some convincing proof of that, CathG

"Soldiers?" "For years?"   Sounds like a liberal-promoted myth, because I've heard soldiers like him.

It's true that all military units have their complainers, so I'd like to see evidence of more than the occasional disgruntled soldier with a grudge.

soldier

My husband is an Army soldier.  I first heard Petraeus called "Betrayus" literally years ago.  You would like some convincing proof -- what are you 9?  Why so hostile toward me?  Do you honestly think Wesley Clark was liked by soldiers familiar with him?  -- before he ran on the Democrat ticket for President?  You can't be that naive.  My point was/is that Olbermann did not come up with that, clever "Joe" did long before Petraeus was front and center.

By the way, I couldn't be further from a liberal.  Although clearly since you have "heard" soldiers like him you are the authority and I must be a liberal.   Catherine

Sorry CathyG

I didn't intend it to be "hostile"....even if I AM only nine.   ;^>

My (probably clumsy) intent was to say that your post sounded to me as if you meant to say that it was how soldiers commonly saw the general.  I mentioned what I had heard only as a balance, not as the final authority.

Also, I did look up your profile yesterday, so I had a pretty good idea of where you're coming from....and I didn't intend to imply that you're a liberal.   But I come from a military family, too, and I know how "barracks scuttlebutt" can go.

I know the editors at NBs have to watch KO in order to report misrepresentations and bias, but for the love of god, how do you do it? I literally cannot stomach the sight of this man... do you guys get extra pay for covering him or do you draw straws to see who's next?

bobtheman,

LOL-I'm guessing they draw straws.

Let's face it, no one in their right mind would volunteer to watch that tripe.

Keith and the MoveOn: immature, foolish children

I am sure someone else has probably already said this more than once, but my first reaction to the 'General -Betray-Us" was that this loathesome group must be populated with spoiled fifth-graders: what a silly, silly thing to come up with!  The maturity of the play-on-words is more than underwhelming, wouldn't you say?  I was actually embarrassed for the morons!  It comes then as no surprise that the talking head with the least talent and the most chutzpah would have originated the unfortunate derision of General Petraeus' good name and integrity.   The space between the adults and the babies widens still further.

MoveOn and Keith and the Left: a bunch of pimple-faced, spoiled, traitorous miscreants.   I feel like the only thing to do with them is give 'em a good arse thumping and a permanent 'time-out'.

Anyone who says they support the troops but not the mission is a liar.

Hey Kath

Long time, no see.

I had to laugh at your last one.... MoveOn and Keith and the Left: a bunch of pimple-faced, spoiled, traitorous miscreants

One of the people who works for me is a crazy New Yorker....with roots in the, um, islands.

She doesn't call them "pimple-faced"....she calls them "PINEAPPLES".

Every time I hear that....I just roll on the floor.

Thought you might appreciate that little tidbit.

It slays me, every time I hear it (which is about once a day....but it is still hillarious!).

miss you, Blonde!

I'm in school and working full-time so I am not here as much as I would like to be.  I miss talking to you and the rest of the crew.  I do read most of what people are saying, and as usual, you are brilliant (and funny).  Thanks.  Hope you see this!

    Go Gators (Right?)!

Anyone who says they support the troops but not the mission is a liar.

The definition of irony ... MoveOn

MoveOn can't.

Disagree.  But not with

Disagree.  But not with the criticism of MoveOn ad title.  That was shameful and insulting.  I guess MoveOn was so giddy and self-congratulatory over the clever word play on the General's name that the sheer offensiveness of its usage was overlooked.

The context in which Olbermann used the term was not only different, but came at a time in which it was understood that the Petraeus report would neither be authored nor delivered by the General, and, if that were true, it could be considered a "betrayal" of what the American public had been lead to believe.  It may still have not been entirely appropriate to use the phrase at all, but it hardly compared with the utter tastlelessness of the MoveOn ad title which explicitly referred to Petraeus as "General Betray Us".  Olbermann did not.

Harry Shearer has been using

Harry Shearer has been using this lame (I use the word generously) pun on Le Show for at least a year.  Neither Olbermann nor MoveOn made it up, and Shearer likely didn't either, and it's not clever enough to worry about.
