Daily Kos Week in Review: Reflections on Bin Laden and His Legacy

May 8th, 2011 10:39 PM

Without further ado, the daffy diarists of the Daily Kos making hay out of the end of Osama bin Laden.

Seneca Doane:

...Bush said we're going to get [bin Laden], then he said he didn't much care -- and he got re-elected anyway.  If the Presidency were a bowling alley, Bush's would have been the one for kids with those cushions in the gutters to keep the ball in the alley...

Geomoo:

...I view the capture of bin Laden as a mass consumption event for the purpose of justifying in the eyes of voters continued massive expenditures on imperialism and continuing drift from our Enlightenment values...

Omnipotentpoobah:

...[After 9/11] America became – not the Greatest Generation of heroes and fidelity to high-minded principles – but a country of wobble-kneed Don Knotts impersonators grasping at any straw, enhanced interrogation technique, or abridged law to feel “safe”...

Our latter day lunatic fringe is terrified at the tyranny of affordable health care, yet makes not a peep over unrestricted wiretaps, error-prone no-fly lists, and a host of other insults to the Constitution...

Leftwing Noise Machine:

...[I]f Bin Laden were still alive, the Tea Party wouldn’t be so crestfallen.  The death of the world’s most wanted terrorist and polygamist has stuck in the Tea Party’s craw like an hor d’oeuvre made of velcro.   It was Obama, the alleged Frederick Engels and crypto imam from Kenya, who took out the jihadist that Reagan once called a “freedom fighter,” not George Bush, who lost focus like Forrest Gump watching a floating feather, as he wandered into Fallujah...

...It took a Democrat who ended waterboarding to piece together the information and help restore America’s dignity.  Competence matters, which is why conservative presidents do stupid things like invade Iraq, and Democratic presidents arrange to shoot Bin Laden in the head.

Jerome a Paris:

...[T]here have been notable calls in the media for...an end to the GWOT ("war on terra"), but politicians are not following suit...It does not seem like we'll get out of our siege mentality [or] will lose our thirst to kick (brown) people's asses at great expense anytime soon...

...Ben Laden's [sic] death is largely irrelevant. He was successful beyond his wildest dreams in that we conducted horrible policies that killed millions and alienated many more in the Arab world, we gave up our own civil rights and freedoms in a pointless quest for "security," we spent untold amounts of money on a massive military/security apparatus which is not going away any time soon...

LaFeminista:

...I think the strategists behind every Republican wannabe must be looking for their security blanket, they cannot even play the Bin Laden under your bed drivel...

Bill in Portland Maine:

...Lest we forget, multimillionaire Osama bin Laden dropped out of society out of frustration with the status quo and in deference to a radical ideology.  Which leads to today's big question: did bin Laden go Galt?

Sterno:

...[D]eep down, I wish [bin Laden] would have survived and that we had captured him.  Sure he deserves death, but I think we could do better than that...

What I imagine is a prison cell in New York, as close to ground zero as possible.  There he would receive the best medical care that our western technology could provide.  I'd want him to live a long long time.  Partially this would demonstrate to the world that we treat even our enemies with human dignity, but mostly because I want him to stick around and see how badly he failed...
