DNC Debbie: Romney Shows 'Extremism, Callous Disregard for Undocumented Immigrants'

In 2008, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz harshly attacked Sarah Palin: “She knows nothing.”  But when it comes to illegal immigration, the DNC chair is the one who sounds like she needs to study up, sounding amazed last year that the Republicans believed it “should in fact be a crime.” It has long been a crime, no matter how much liberals want to sell the self-negating notion of “law-abiding illegal aliens.”

On Monday’s Stephanie Miller show, Wasserman Schultz attacked the Republican presidential candidates for “their extremism, their callous disregard for undocumented immigrants who have been here for generations.”

This might suggest she hasn’t heard much of Newt Gingrich’s don’t-deport-undocumented-grandparents rhetoric. Why can’t it be said that illegal aliens show “callous disregard” for our legal system, especially if they violate it for generations?

STEPHANIE MILLER: Are you enjoying this Republican primary as much as I am this year? I mean --

DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ: You know why I’m not enjoying it? I’ll tell you. As a Floridian, and I’m here in the state of Florida as we speak, as a Floridian their extremism, their callous disregard for undocumented immigrants who have been here for generations who are here just trying to work hard these are people many of whom pay taxes who are productive members of our society who simply want an opportunity to be able to have a path created for them to legally remain in the country, which is why comprehensive immigration reform is so important. But the Republican field led by Mitt Romney, Stephanie. I mean, Mitt Romney really thinks that you know 11 million undocumented immigrants are just going to line up and self-deport, you know, check themselves out of the country and go back.

MILLER: Although I don’t know if you’ve seen he flip-flopped on that. Shocking but he seemed to talk that back.

WASSERMAN SCHULTZ: Let’s not give him even that much credit because he didn’t flip flop on it he’s hypocritically saying one thing to South Carolina voters and trying to nuance his position on that issue particularly with the Dream Act when he’s in Florida and that’s why it’s hard for me to rejoice in the circular firing squad that’s going on on their side.
