Chuck Todd Warns Trump Against ‘Rabbit Hole’ of Clinton ‘Obsession’

September 2nd, 2016 2:38 PM

Generally, it’s not a good idea to take advice from people who don’t have your interests at heart. On Friday, NBC’s Chuck Todd advised Donald Trump to stay away from the “rabbit hole” of Clinton “obsession.” MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell fretted that the hiring of David Bossie as deputy campaign manager is a “nightmare in Clinton world.”

Todd warned the Trump campaign: “You're going to fall into the rabbit hole of trying to just be so obsessed about Clinton and so obsessed about going after them... you don't think about your own campaign.”

The Meet the Press anchor described the process of investigating scandals this way: “There's a lot of Republicans who went after the Clintons over the years, who obsessed over going after the Clintons over the years, who basically ended up with egg on their face or they overreached.”

Perhaps if a more vigilant press looked into these stories instead of censoring them, Republicans, conservatives and Trump wouldn’t have to go down “rabbit holes.” See examples below:

Chuck Todd is the same man who rationalized Clinton’s e-mail scandal by saying that if it wasn’t for Trump, journalists would cover the controversy.

ANDREA MITCHELL: Look who they hired as their new deputy campaign manager, Bossie. He is a nightmare in Clinton world. For 20 years, he has been the personification —

CHUCK TODD: Look, with Bannon and Bossie here, I think Trump is, he better — you're going to fall into the rabbit hole of trying to just be so obsessed about Clinton and so obsessed about going after them —

MITCHELL: You don't put your own program --

TODD: — you don't think about your own campaign. You know, there's a lot of Republicans who are no longer in office. There’s a lot of Republicans who went after the Clintons over the years, who obsessed over going after the Clintons over the years, who basically ended up with egg on their face or they overreached or there's a lot of retired former Republican officials who would quietly give Trump advice and say, “You know what? Those are rabbit holes, you get caught in them.” And I have a feeling he now has —  if you have three people in the room. Kellyanne Conway, who is thinking about how do you win the election? Steve Bannon, who we don’t know what he’s thinking, but I don’t know if winning the election is his priority. And Bossie, Bossie and Bannon, their instinct is going to be go after Clinton, but does that distract you? Does it get you off course and that’s something if you’re Trump you have got to be concerned about. You over-go after Clinton.
