Chris Matthews: Unlike Republicans, Democrats Don’t ‘Hate’

July 27th, 2016 10:50 PM

Unlike Republicans, Democrats don’t “hate.” That incredible claim came from MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Wednesday night came as the Hardball host fawned over the Democratic National Convention. Matthews sneered, “Republicans hate Hillary Clinton. I don't think there's a better word for chemistry-like dislike for her. It's pure. They hate her.”

The MSNBC host contrasted, “I don't think Democrats hate Donald Trump. It's not like that. It's something like he appalls them.” Struggling to articulate his claim, Matthews continued, “I'm going to find that word, but it's not hatred, these people are happy when somebody puts down Trump.”

During the Republican National Convention, it seemed like Matthews was the one who hated. He trashed GOP delegates as “bloodthirsty” people who want to “kill” Mrs. Clinton. Matthews lashed out at “mutinous” Ted Cruz.

As for “hate,” Democratic senatorial candidate Alan Grayson trashed the GOP health care plan as “die quickly!”

BRIAN WILLIAMS: Chris Matthews is in the arena tonight in his hometown of Philadelphia. Hey Chris.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well, it's a happy night here, I was trying to think, Rachel and Brian about the different emotions, certainly what picks this crowd up tonight is the wonderful indictment by Michael Bloomberg, and before that by Leon Panetta, of Donald Trump. And the interesting thing is although most people here are progressives or moderate progressives or moderate Democrats, they do respect money. And when Mike Bloomberg, who really did build his fortune personally, personally with communications, business communications, he did it himself. As he said, “I didn't get a million dollar stake from the old man,” that was a big line here tonight. They do respect free enterprise and the purity like him. The other thing is they respect the military like most Americans and when Leon Panetta came in here and said this guy's not worthy. Bottom line, I  guess you guys, you have your own views about this, how could you not?

Republicans hate Hillary Clinton. I don't think there's a better word for their chemistry-like dislike for her. It's pure. They hate her. I don't think Democrats hate Donald Trump. It's not like that. It's something like he appalls them. He appalls them, the idea that he could be a candidate for of either party, that he could presume to lead this country. There's some —  I'm going to find that word, but it's not hatred. These people are happy when somebody puts down Trump. They're not angry, they're thrilled. When people put down Hillary Clinton, they're angry. It shows in their faces. They're not happy people. This convention has met to show its happiness at the prospect of defeating Donald Trump. And I think if it began with an uplifting speech by Michelle last night, by the personal witness of Hillary. I mean two nights, the personal witness last night, and it's going to really resound tonight with the speech by the President were he makes the case against Donald Trump, brilliantly.
