Fox's Shepard Smith: 'People Don't Know' Who I Voted For

August 18th, 2015 4:31 PM

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith appeared on Late Night, Monday, and told host Seth Meyers that no one knows who he voted for. The journalist insisted, "Well, I don't tell them. So, people don't know." Meyers blurted, "But people can't read it on your face?"

The comedian added, "Let me try. Did you vote for Obama?" Smith replied, "No." After a pause, he quipped, "I might have lied." The Fox anchor then insisted, "If I got around to voting last time, I don't remember."

In a Janurary 31, 2013 Hollywood Reporter article, Smith made a similar claim.

THR: Do you personally lean right or left?

Smith: My mother doesn’t know the answer to that question, so I’m certainly not going to tell The Hollywood Reporter.

THR: You Serious? Your own mother doesn’t know?

Smith: She has no idea. No one in my family knows who I voted for – ever! You can’t be in a place like this and talk about your own politics publicly. People will say, ‘oh, he’s a left-wing nut,’ or, ‘oh, he’s a right-wing crazy.’ Let em say it. They’re much more interested in this left and right thing than I am.

THR: How about your ex-wife? She know your politics?

Smith: Ain’t no way.

On August 1, 2012, the journalist referred to Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day as a "national day of intolerance."

On May 9, 2012, Smith compared opposing gay marriage to "segregation" and hailed Barack Obama's switch on the issue, saying the President is "now in the 21st century."

A transcript of the exchange is below:

Late Night With Seth Meyers
8/18/15
1:22am ET

SETH MEYERS: Now, you cover breaking news. You are not an opinion pundit on the network.

SHEPARD SMITH: No.

MEYERS: And – So much so that even claimed your loved ones have no idea how you vote in elections. Is this true?

SMITH: Well, I don't tell them. So, people don't know.

MEYERS: You don't tell them. But, people can't read it on your face?

SMITH: I don't think – I hope not.

MEYERS: Let me try. Did you vote for Obama?

SMITH: No. I might have lied.

MEYERS: Yeah. [ Laughter ] You're real good.

SMITH: If I got around to voting last time, I don't remember. It was a very busy election cycle.
