Matthews on Friday's Jobs Report: Will Democrats and Hillary Clinton Have Bragging Rights in 2016?

May 5th, 2013 6:07 PM

It really is amazing how excited liberal media members can get when the economy produces 165,000 jobs and a 7.5 percent unemployment rate under a Democratic president.

So enthralled was Chris Matthews that he actually asked guests on the syndicated program bearing his name Sunday if this will give Democrats including Hillary Clinton "bragging rights" in 2016 (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Friday's jobs report is the latest evidence the economy is coming back, and our big question this week: Will the Democrats including Hillary Clinton should she run have bragging rights in 2016 and therefore be the favorite?

DAN RATHER: If it continues on this trend line, yes.

MATTHEWS: Katty Kay?

KATTY KAY, BBC: Yes.

MATTHEWS: How about a loud yes?

KAY: Yes.

MATTHEWS: That’s a soft yes.

KAY: Yes. Loud yes.

KATHLEEN PARKER, WASHINGTON POST: Obviously yes if it continues.

MATTHEWS: Thank you, we just deal with the basics here.

DAVID IGNATIUS, WASHINGTON POST: If it continues, it starts going up, there’s time for it to go down again before 2016. Hold your horses, Hillary.

MATTHEWS: Sorcerer’s apprentice.

So in these geniuses' view, a 7.5 percent unemployment rate with 22 million people either jobless or underemployed, the lowest labor participation rate since the '70s, and a record number of people on food stamps and welfare is something to brag about.

Let's face facts: if Obama were a Republican, Matthews and Company would be talking about how the Democrats will be able to run against the lousy economy in 2016.

Down really has become up under Obama, hasn't it?
