Judy Miller: Media Ignore Reporter Facing Jail Time Because She's From Fox News

As NewsBusters documented Monday, the media have been largely ignoring the plight of Fox News reporter Jana Winter who may end up going to jail for maintaining the secrecy of her sources on a report concerning Aurora, Colorado, shooter James Holmes.

Former New York Times reporter Judy Miller - who spent 85 days in jail in 2005 for withholding her source regarding the Valerie Plame affair - told NewsMaxTV's Steve Malzberg Monday, "If this were CNN or if this were the New York Times, yeah, I think it’s almost certain that there would have been more coverage and more publicity than there’s been to date" (video follows with transcript and absolutely no need for additional commentary):

STEVE MALZBERG, HOST: Do you believe it’s because this woman works for Fox News? Do you? Answer that and answer do you believe if this were a Washington Post or a CNN reporter, do you think that we’d be seeing a different reaction from the quote-unquote journalistic community?

JUDY MILLER: Well, I fear you may be right. I mean, there has been as everyone who’s listened to White House statements has known a real vilification campaign against Fox News. The, you know, there are media watchdog groups that are, who openly announced that their raison d'être, the whole point of their operation, is to get rid of Fox News, undermine it. I think a lot of people who don’t watch Fox don’t even realize that Fox breaks news, that’s not just a network that gives air to different, you know, and conservative views as well as liberal ones by the way, but that it also breaks news.

But yes, if this were CNN or if this were the New York Times, yeah, I think it’s almost certain that there would have been more coverage and more publicity than there’s been to date, and that’s what really disappoints me so far about the reaction. There’s, there’s, where is the outrage? It’s a good question that you raise.
