On the CBS Late Show Thursday, host David Letterman aired a mock video of Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich having sex with a vending machine.

This came at the end of his Top Ten segment called, "Top Ten Revelations In The Interview With Newt Gingrich's Ex-Wife" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Readers are reminded that this is a Republican presidential candidate that used to be the Speaker of the House, and this is what is now considered acceptable on late night television.

Is there any wonder Americans have no respect for their political leaders?

The cynical might say, "This is a joke. Get a grip."

But something to consider is the vast number of Americans that get their "news" as well as their opinions about current events and politicians from the late night comedy programs.

Polls have shown a disturbing number of people believe the content on Comedy Centrals Daily Show is "news."

We also learned that last year late night comics told three times as many jokes about Republicans as they did Democrats.

As such, this is no laughing matter.

If a growing number of Americans get their political views from watching such shows, and the vast majority of jokes target Republicans, this can have a significant impact on how such people vote.

Equally important, these programs garner much larger audiences than cable news networks. The Late Show and Tonight Show get in excess of three million viewers a night.

With the Obama-loving media doing everything in its power to get the current president reelected, every negative depiction of his opponent or potential opponent by late night comics can make a huge difference come November especially if this is a close election.

So be careful not to laugh too hard at jokes about politicians you support - those making them have an agenda to keep the people you like out of office.

Think about it.

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.
