When Hillary Needs It Most, 'The Daily Show' Vets Bernie's Policies

With Hillary Clinton still unable to finish off Bernie Sanders, many in the liberal media are trying to drag her over the finish line. The night of the Indiana primary, which was a Sanders victory, CNN wanted to know when he would get out of the way and stop hurting Clinton. In a similar way, The Daily Show decided that Thursday night was the right time to actually analyze Sander’s proposals and tell the truth about them.

Host Trevor Noah tried to start off with talking about Sander’s proposed tax increases, but was interrupted by Desi Lydic who didn’t want him to trigger Sanders’ supporters. “No... Trevor, have you ever pissed off Bernie Sanders supporters? It's like poking a hornet's nest. A hornet’s nest with student debt,” Lydic exclaimed, “Can't you just do something less controversial like, I don’t know, draw a picture of Muhammad on a pig?” Lydic’s comment about Sanders’ supports seemed to discredit them as a group.

Strangely, Noah felt that it was the right time to draw attention to the fact that Sanders’ math does not add up:

Bernie Sanders said his health plan would save America $324 billion a year on prescription drugs, and I was like cool that’s huge. But then I found out that America only spends $305 billion a year on prescription drugs. So, basically Bernie said he would save America more on drugs than America even spends on drugs.

Sanders’ stance as the anti-war candidate was next on Noah’s hit list. He brought attention to Sanders’ support of the highly advanced F-35. “He supports the F-35 because a bunch of him are made in his state, Vermont. But it's hard to be pro trillion-dollar jet and anti-military waste,” he stated.

If that wasn’t enough to discredit Sander’s to Democratic voters, Noah went a step farther. “Voters want nothing more than someone who takes on the establishment,” Noah noted, “Someone who speaks his mind even if his promises are unrealistic and has an insane head of hair.” From there, Noah made the ultimate discrediting comparison for democrats, “I just realized, Bernie's campaign reminds me of Donald [Trump].

Noah argued that it was important for conversations like this to happen. But the timing of this conversation is suspect, because now is the time Clinton needs it most.

TREVOR NOAH: Yeah, Bernie Sanders is right. There are some economists who agree with him. I mean, there is always somebody who will take any position. For instance, I know an economist in Chinatown who can get you any numbers you want. Also, a human baby hand. Whatever you need. The problem is, if Bernie Sanders raises taxes enough to pay for his plans, it wouldn't put enough of a dent in economic growth that he'd then either have to raise the taxes even more in order

[Smashing cymbals]

 Desi, what are you doing?

DESI LYDIC: No, no. I'm just helping you clarify what I think we all know you meant, that there is nothing wrong with Bernie Sanders, we love him! And all of his policies.

NOAH: Yeah. Yeah, we love him, but I'm just saying that the tax rates he's proposing –

LYDIC: No, no, no! [Smashing cymbals] No... Trevor, have you ever pissed off Bernie Sanders supporters? It's like poking a hornet's nest. A hornet’s nest with student debt. Can't you just do something less controversial like, I don’t know, draw a picture of Muhammad on a pig?

Tell the Truth 2016

NOAH: What?! Desi, calm down. We're having a reasonable conversation about a few of Bernie's policies.

LYDIC: I'll get the pig.

NOAH: I don't understand this. Look, look... This isn't really such a big deal. I mean, when I heard about the budget deficit, I thought, people disagree on numbers a lot and I'm sure that Bernie Sanders is right. It was the same when Bernie Sanders said his health plan would save America $324 billion a year on prescription drugs, and I was like cool that’s huge. But then I found out that America only spends $305 billion a year on prescription drugs. So, basically Bernie said he would save America more on drugs than America even spends on drugs. So I’m just saying, if you're serious –

RONNY CHIENG: Hey, everybody! 100 percent Bernie bro! Ronny Chieng here! Not Trevor Noah, don't know him, don't agree with him. Send your threatening Twitter rants to @trevornoah not me!

NOAH: Ronny. Ronny. We're not going doing anything wrong.

CHIENG: He’s a tank! He’s a tank! You’re a tank for Hillary! He’s a tank!

NOAH: What's the point? What’s the point of any of this, if we can't discuss actual policies, Ronny?

CHIENG: Well, what's the point of eating ice cream if it's going to melt in your tummy, okay? You’re insane Trevor. And you are on your own. Bernie 2016! Bernie Bernie Bernie!

NOAH: Ronny, I get it! Look I get it I really do. Bernie's a great politician, but you have to remember he is still a politician and sometimes that means he has to compromise on his values. I mean, he sold himself hard as the anti-war candidate. But then he is also the person who supports the F-35 fighter jet program, a $1.2 trillion program, a plane that the military itself doesn't even want. [Camera moves away] What are you doing? No! Stop! It's an important point! Is everyone afraid of Bernie here? Hold on!

Listen to me. Listen to be. Now, he supports the F-35 because a bunch of him are made in his state, Vermont. But it's hard to be pro trillion-dollar jet and anti-military waste. Come on! Okay guys, I get it. Go, I get it. My point is this, I'm not against Bernie Sanders. In fact, maybe his big wild ideas are good news for America because we now know this is the year where voters want nothing more than someone who takes on the establishment. Someone who speaks his mind even if his promises are unrealistic and has an insane head of hair -- I just realized, Bernie's campaign reminds me of Donald—[Screen cuts to static]
