Gary Bauer Tells NewsBusters 'I've Never Seen Media So in the Tank for the Democratic Party'

TAMPA, Florida | American Values president Gary Bauer said Tuesday, "I have never seen a media so deeply in the tank for the left and for the Democratic Party and for Barack Obama. Never."

Speaking with NewsBusters at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Bauer added, "They don’t even try to look like they’re unbiased anymore...They look like they’re a division of the Democratic National Committee" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

During an impromptu interview, Bauer was asked what he thought about the media coverage of this president and the campaign so far.

"Given that we need to follow certain rules about what kind of language you can use on the air, I’m going to have to restrict myself on some of the adjectives I would be inclined to use," Bauer replied.

"My whole life I’ve grown up in the conservative movement knowing that you don’t really get a break from the media, but I have never seen a media so deeply in the tank for the left and for the Democratic Party and for Barack Obama. Never," he added. "They don’t even try to look like they’re unbiased anymore. I think it’s disgusting, but I think even more importantly, it is a tremendous disservice to the American people."

"Freedom of the media, freedom of the press is an extremely important part of the freedoms that we have," Bauer continued. "And whether these ladies and gentlemen of the media realize it or not, they’re really long-term going to undermine that precious freedom because they look like they’re a division of the Democratic National Committee."

Bauer was then asked what he thought about the whole media fabricated “War on Women” that the Republicans are accused of engaging in.

"It’s laughable," he said. "It doesn’t even pass the straight-face test. Why would any political party declare war on half of the American public and about 54 percent of American voters?"

"The whole concept is ridiculous," he added. "I could make a better case that Barack Obama and his Party have declared war on babies, but I don’t ever say that because it’s kind of over the top. But, you know, if this is the new rhetoric, I’ll have to reconsider."
