MSNBC’s Kerry Sanders Surprised by ‘Don’t Listen to the Media’ Message from Stein Supporter

November 8th, 2016 2:05 PM

It isn’t just conservatives complaining about the news media this election cycle. Hoping to interview a millennial voter of Puerto Rican descent, MSNBC reporter Kerry Sanders found a Jill Stein supporter who didn’t think her candidate was being covered fairly.

When Sanders pointed out to the young woman that her candidate probably wouldn’t win, she responded “Well, according to all of the, you know, the media, it's either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. But everyone, there’s other people to vote for! There’s other people. So, let your voice be heard, and research, and go online, and don't listen to the media!”

To his credit, Sanders seemed surprised, but not offended, as he quipped, “Well, other than the fact that we are the media and you’re on the air. But thank you very much for joining us.”

KERRY SANDERS: …and if we look at that group, we’re actually looking at those who are originally from Puerto Rico. And lo and behold, come on over here and join me, we have a young millennial voter. Your name is?

JILL STEIN SUPPORTER: Janelle Rivera

SANDERS: And you are – and your family is originally from?

STEIN SUPPORTER: Puerto Rico

SANDERS: Ok, so this is the group we're talking about. What compelled you to come out here, did a specific candidate reach you, did they knock on your door, you just said I want to vote? Why did you decide that, yes I’m coming down – when itis, I should note, your first presidential election.

STEIN SUPPORTER: Yes, i my first presidential election. Well, honestly I just want my voice to be heard, for all the young people who are going to school, so I placed my vote for Jill stein and I hope she wins even though it's gonna be a short race, but, I mean --

SANDERS: You know she’s not going to win is what you're saying.

STEIN SUPPORTER: Well, according to all of the, you know, the media, it's either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. But everyone, there’s other people to vote for! There’s other people. So, let your voice be heard, and research, and go online, and don't listen to the media.

SANDERS: Well, other than the fact that we are the media and you’re on the air. But thank you very much for joining us.

STEIN SUPPORTER: You’re welcome!

SANDERS: Very nice of her to stop here, share with us some of her thoughts. And there you go. Remember, there is a whole segment of voters who out he who are speaking whether they think that their candidate’s gonna win or lose. They’re speaking at the polls, and of course that’s the most important thing. People coming out and making their voice heard. So, as we move in the next four years, you can at least say you spoke your mind. So, if you haven’t, take what she said. Go vote. For whoever you vote for.
