Piers Morgan Cheers 'Excellent Good News' of Fewer Gun Permits During Shutdown

October 1st, 2013 4:57 PM

CNN's Piers Morgan thinks it's "excellent" that less gun permits will be issued during the government shutdown.

"One of the only positives I've heard so far," Morgan told business anchor Christine Romans, "is that actually gun permits, new gun permits may be delayed as part of all this." He added that "without them realizing it, the Tea Partiers, may have literally shot themselves in the foot." [Video below the break. Audio here.]

Romans called it "an interesting irony" and explained how the issuing of gun permits by the ATF will be slowed or even stopped during the shutdown. "Excellent. Well, that's excellent good news," Morgan chirped.

"Wonder if the Tea Party renegades realise their helpful gun control move?" he tweeted.

Below is a transcript of the exchange, which aired on Piers Morgan Live on September 30 at 9:09 p.m. EDT:

PIERS MORGAN: One of the only positives I've heard so far was what you suggested to me maybe the case in the break which is that actually gun permits, new gun permits may be delayed as part of all this. So this may be without them realizing it, the Tea Partiers, may have literally shot themselves in the foot.

CHRISTINE ROMANS: An interesting irony as it were. Look, when you look at the Treasury Department's list of contingencies, the Treasury runs ATF and there are new gun permits that run through there. When you shut down the government, you slow down or stop the work of the government. And the government does a lot of things like issue gun permits.

MORGAN: Excellent. Well, that's excellent good news.
