Another Tragedy, Another CNN Push for Gun Control

December 3rd, 2012 6:38 PM

CNN took Bob Costas' gun control rant and ran with it on Monday. The clip of the NBC sportscaster decrying handguns ran multiple times during the morning coverage and again on Monday afternoon, with anchors hoping gun control legislation is in the works.

Anchor Brooke Baldwin remarked "perhaps Congress is listening" after her guest advocated tougher gun laws. Piers Morgan went on another Twitter rant about the need for more gun control. Anchor Carol Costello asked if the incident should "cause us to rethink gun control?"

"He's 100% right," Morgan tweeted about Costas on Monday afternoon. "The 2nd amendment was devised with muskets in mind, not high-powered handguns & assault rifles. Fact," he added later. Morgan re-tweeted New York Mayor Bloomberg's call for a "frank discussion about gun laws and gun violence."

Morgan's Twitter rant on gun control was not his first. Hours after the deadly Aurora shooting in July, the CNN host took to Twitter and clamored for more gun control.

Anchor Brooke Baldwin played Costas' monologue to author and activist Kevin Powell, who answered "I do think we need to have tougher gun laws." He decried domestic violence cases with men "using that gun that they got really easy access to."

Baldwin ended the interview saying "perhaps, Kevin Powell, perhaps Congress is listening."

Soledad O'Brien played the Costas clip on Starting Point, and anchor Carol Costello brought it up multiple times during the 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. EST hours, including when she asked "Should the Perkins/Belcher tragedy cause us to rethink gun control?"
