The image of America as “a shining city on a hill” (or a similar phrase) has been a staple of conservative political rhetoric for several decades. In a Tuesday piece for The New Republic, Matthew Pratt Guterl, a professor at Brown University, adapted the metaphor for leftist domestic use: “The nation as a whole seems no longer interested in celebrating any vision of equity, justice, and mutual respect. We need new symbols desperately. Blue states—especially those with democratic supermajorities and friendly neighbors, like Massachusetts and Rhode Island, California and Oregon—can be those symbols. And they can turn that symbolism into meaningful practice and policy.”

During a Thursday morning interview with Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser to Donald Trump, Chris Cuomo -- a co-host of the Cable News Network's New Day program -- clashed several times with her about whether the president-elect should accept the conclusion of the intelligence community that hacking by Russians took place during last November's election. On Friday, NBC Today show co-host Matt Lauer celebrated his 20th anniversary anchoring the network morning show. Since joining the program on January 6, 1997, Lauer’s liberal bias has routinely seeped into his news coverage. From repeatedly excusing Bill Clinton’s sex scandals as mere “peccadillos” to bashing George W. Bush’s “controversial” presidency to gushing over Barack Obama as a “savior” for the country, his double-standard treatment for Democrats and Republicans has been clear. In addition, he more than once warned viewers that the end was near in his crusade to push the left’s climate change agenda. Friday morning on ABC’s The View, co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Jedediah Bila fought over Republicans’ plan to defund Planned Parenthood when they repeal Obamacare. While Bila tried to present the pro-life position, Whoopi exploded in anger and frustration every time Bila spoke. Whoopi was all over the place, discounting things she disagreed with without actually making a counter-argument. She also claimed her “religion” taught her to pay for abortions for women who “need” this “service.”

After several months of New York Times angst over the supposed racist turn of the Republican Party, the front page of Monday’s New York Times featured a hostile report on a Koch brothers public relations campaign appealing to black voters, business reporter Hiroko Tabuchi’s “Koch Strategy Mixes Gospel And Oil Policy.” Beyond the “ultraconservative” labeling on the front page, Tabuchi found a left-wing environmentalist to smear as “racist” the attempt by the wealthy industrialists Charles and David Koch to convert minorities to their viewpoint on an issue.

It’s time once more for the Great Race! No, not the excellent Jack Lemmon/Tony Curtis comedy. I mean the media/alt-left’s quest to make everything in America about race -- except when it’s about race in a way they don’t like.

Then it’s not about race at all.
