Schieffer: Ted Cruz ‘Had a Better Ground Game Than El Chapo’

February 2nd, 2016 10:09 AM

Coming out of retirement on Tuesday’s CBS This Morning to comment on the state of the 2016 presidential race after the Iowa caucus, former Face the Nation moderator Bob Schieffer decided it was appropriate to compare the Republican winner to murderous Mexican drug lord El Chapo.

Co-host Norah O’Donnell commented on what an impressive ground game Ted Cruz had put together in the state: “Well, I think what we learned was that there was a higher percentage of evangelicals turning out than in 2008 and shows Ted Cruz really has a ground game....He has a superior organization.” In response, Schieffer quipped: “I mean, he had a better ground game out there than El Chapo might have had, you know.”

The hosts all found Schieffer’s remark hilarious and shared a hearty laugh.

Moments earlier in the discussion, Schieffer noted attending a recent Washington D.C. dinner with “the establishment of establishments,” and finding that candidates like Cruz and Donald Trump were “scaring mainstream Republicans to death.”

On Monday's CBS Evening News, Schieffer denounced the presidential campaign as "nasty" and "illogical." Ironically, his Tuesday comments seemed to fit that description.
