Dowd: Founding Fathers Would Question Trump's Understanding of Constitution

On Monday’s Good Morning America, ABC analyst Matthew Dowd blasted Donald Trump for criticizing the federal judge who blocked his executive immigration order. Playing off of the New England Patriots’ win last night, Dowd said the true “patriots” were the ones standing up to President Trump.

The segment began with anchor Robin Roberts asking Dowd what he thought about the continued “Twitter attacks” from Trump to the federal judge. Dowd then brought in the Founding Fathers to back up his praise for the judge, saying they would approve of his “check and balance” on the President’s power:

DOWD: [A]s I was watching the excitement surrounding the Super Bowl, I was thinking about a whole new group of patriots, not football fans and not football players but founders of the Constitution who I think would be looking at the last 72 hours in befuddlement and watching what’s happened, watching the question on checks and balances, watching what sort of seems like a lack of understanding about what our constitutional values are in this. I think it's amazing to me that Donald Trump has criticized a federal judge who was appointed by George W. Bush who is a Republican Constitutionalist more than he has Vladimir Putin.

He reiterated his point on Twitter:

Dowd went on to note that Trump’s comments on Putin had upset people on both sides of the political aisle.
