The View's Behar Groans At Notion Santorum May Run for President In 2016

April 11th, 2012 5:19 PM

Discussing Rick Santorum's suspension of his presidential campaign on the April 11 program, most members of the panel, including Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck, noted that it was a difficult decision for him and his family. But leave it to hyper-partisan liberal comedian Joy Behar to kick the former senator when he's down. [Audio here, video below the jump]

After Hasselbeck mentioned Santorum’s family situation as a reason for him dropping out of the race, Behar bellowed, “It’s all lies, and the daughter being sick should make him think, gee, that's the most important thing in life, not that I should be President. ” Behar took another jab at Santorum, openly sighing, saying “He also wasn’t going to win in Pennsylvania which really would have made him look bad for 2016. He wants to be president then, and we’ll have to look forward to that.”

If you are, like me, a regular viewer of ABC’s The View (this is how NewsBusters hazes the interns), you learn that Joy Behar has a mouth with no filter, even when discussing serious news stories. Behar recently trashed Sarah Palin when she was a guest on MSNBC's The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, quipping, “Shouldn’t she be turning letters on some game show?”

Behar is well-known for regularly making outrageous comments about Republicans. Some of them have bordered if not ventured deeply into the conspiratorial, like when, during the 2008 election, Behar suggested that Rev. Jeremiah Wright was being paid by Republicans.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Now, yesterday, Rick Santorum announced that he's dropping out (laughs) of the Presidential race but he has yet to endorse Mitt Romney. Now what do you, what is this? Is this like should he take a little time, think what about he wants to do?

SHERRI SHEPHERD: Shouldn’t he have time to mourn -- because he, he  like "Dancing with the Stars," he really wanted to be President. So shouldn't he have a little bit of time to mourn before he has to now has to go and go I'm going to endorse you. Cause he don't–he didn’t want Mitt Romney to win.

ELISABETH HASSELBECK: I think you have a point there, Sherri. I also think he’s probably had a heck of a week. I think his young daughter has been in really, unfortunately, a dire health situation, right, so he's dealing with that. I think to come back and throw your hat in right away for somebody else would seem a little premature.

GOLBERG: Oh, yeah.

JOY BEHAR: Oh its just politics. They all lie, and just make up lies, so what's the difference.

[ Applause ]

SHEPHERD: But he’s still, you know, Rick Santorum–

BEHAR: It’s all lies, and the daughter being sick should make him think, gee, that's the most important thing in life, not that I should be President. And so give it to Romney.

GOLDBERG: I think in part that's what it was. I think the fact that she went back in the hospital, really sorta the family sat down and said, we can't do this anymore. And I think that's what made him –

HASSELBECK: He’s making that tough decision.

BEHAR: He also wasn’t going to win in Pennsylvania which really would have made him look bad for 2016. He wants to be President then, and we’ll have to look forward to that.

HASSELBECK: I don’t think he was worried about looking bad. I think life took a turn on him. I think he's making a right decision for his family. And he's holding off political ones until things get straightened out or settled at home and then he'll proceed.

GOLDBERG: Well you know, Santorum is out. But–Okay. I don't mean to sound the way this is going to sound --

[ Laughter ]

GOLDBERG: but why the hell is Newt Gingrich still in the race?

[ Cheers and applause ]

HASSELBECK: Is he?

SHEPHERD: you know, it's so funny. You know what I wonder about Newt Gingrich, I wonder does Newt Gingrich have another agenda, you know, besides becoming President. Because there are people who have been running that we don't even know who they were. And now, they can go on national book tours. They got the recognition. Is there more of an agenda with Newt Gingrich?

GOLDERBERG: I just, I thought he was out too, but then I saw he’s not! He’s still running, I'm like, dude where you running to? You already ran past the White House. That's not going to happen.

[ Applause ]

(CROSSTALK)

GOLDBERG: It’s not gonna happen! you know, I mean, you know --

BEHAR: The fat lady has sung. And he's still getting money from that crazy guy in Las Vegas.

GOLDBERG: Listen, anybody who can make money in Las Vegas, I'm happy for them. We will be right back -- see me begging for money from Las Vegas? We'll be right back with more hot topics.
