CNN Appalled Trump Talking Politics Overseas, Saw No Problem When Obama Did

July 6th, 2017 12:28 PM

CNN's New Day started Thursday off with an extraordinarily hypocritical attack on President Trump. Co-host Chris Cuomo criticized the President for talking politics overseas: "The idea of the President of the United States. And again, usually, customarily, you go across to trumpet American values. You leave somewhat of the political interplay here at home. He didn't do that.”

CNN Political Analyst John Avlon expressed agreement before Cuomo then complained about Trump criticizing the decision to go into Iraq. No commentary is needed to point out the hypocrisy there. It is amazing the media is actually going after Trump for not trumpeting "American values" after we saw President Obama's disdain for America on full display in country and abroad for eight long years.

Avlon then added the following:

Incredibly odd to hear it. Incredibly odd to hear it on a foreign trip...This elevates it to a new level because it's dangerous to have a president not be defending American values on the stage, but instead airing all our dirty laundry in a way that puts the press as an equal enemy apparently in danger as North Korea that recites Russian talking points and muddles what there is consensus about among everyone else except the occupant of the Oval Office, which is that there was Russian hacking in the election and this is dangerous for our democracy.

"Dangerous," Avlon says of the president not defending American values. I guess Obama was a pretty dangerous president then. Yet, President Obama received little criticism from the mainstream media for his shameful antics overseas. Let us take a stroll down memory lane, shall we? Here are some examples of these antics:

The frustration here is not the fact that the media is criticizing Trump for his words, it is their hypocrisy. They didn't just refuse to criticize Obama on his overseas trips, they often praised him for things that they now criticize Trump for.

Cuomo wasn't done, however. He went on to ask in the following hour: "But to take the petty political plays that are going in here at home and take it to the world stage, was that a surprise to the press corps?"

Trivago, Kiddie Academy, and Progressive ran ads following the first segment.

CHRIS CUOMO: Alright, so, let's get some reactions on this. We'll start with you, John Avlon. The idea of the President of the United States. And again, usually, customarily, you go across to trumpet American values. You leave somewhat of the political interplay here at home. He didn't do that.

JOHN AVLON: Nope.

CUOMO: He wound up echoing something we often hear from Russian intelligence types about U.S. intelligence. They always bring up weapons of mass destruction and how that was wrong. Odd to hear it from an American president?

AVLON: Incredibly odd to hear it. Incredibly odd to hear it on a foreign trip. And look, the White House aides have been trying to say and spin the president was going to step up his game, that he understood the responsibilities of statesmanship and here in his first press conference, on a key foreign trip, he goes out of his way to raise all the demons and you know fight all the dragons of domestic politics as he sees them, engages in what-aboutism regarding Iraq. He questions the Obama administration and their act, with regard to Russian hacking and questions our own intelligence agencies. Apparently, he needed to confirm how many intelligence agencies there are. None of this is normal.  This elevates it to a new level because it's dangerous to have a president not be defending American values on the stage, but instead airing all our dirty laundry in a way that puts the press as an equal enemy apparently in danger as North Korea that recites Russian talking points and muddles what there is consensus about among everyone else except the occupant of the Oval Office, Which is that there was Russian hacking in the election and this is dangerous for our democracy.
