For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Blago picks a Senator!
In a display of political bravado, disgraced Gov. Rod Blagojevich today appointed former Illinois Atty. Gen. Roland Burris to the U.S. Senate, challenging national Democratic leaders to reject the appointment of an African-American to the seat that propelled Barack Obama to the White House. The defiant move tests the resolve of Senate Democrats who said they would not admit anyone appointed by Blagojevich, who is facing impeachment after being accused of trying to sell the Senate seat for personal gain. And it reveals to a nation celebrating Obama's victory the underbelly of Chicago's race-based political scene. President-elect Obama supported the announcement by Senate Democrats that Blagojevich's appointment "will ultimately not stand."
Will this pick stand, or will someone else be Illinois' new junior senator? If the latter, who? What does all this say about the current Democrat party if anything?

December 31, 2008 - 11:09 ET by superconIf Blago is serious then it's a done deal.
Neither the Illinois State Legislature or the Congress can do a damn thing about it.Any threats from Harry Reid to block his seating is just silly talk.He has no authority to block Burris from being seated and will end up looking like a fool if he tries.

From what I have heard Reid and his merry-band of nit-wits cannot stop him from being seated...but the plan is to delay it....

Blago's appointee
December 31, 2008 - 11:19 ET by east tennessee johnAs a former Chicagoan, this was a smart move. Burris is relatively untainted, old party warhorse, who aspired to both this seat and the Govenorship in elections past. Do the national democrats want to challenge this choice? Does Himself want to backhand those who helped him on the way up? Change we can believe in!
Like the leftists said in 2001,"He might be POTUS, but he ain't my President. True enough.
It's not going away.
December 31, 2008 - 11:25 ET by KunisachiI don't think Burris has a chance. Regardless, the decision to reject him is a double edged sword. This is a smooth play by Blagojevich that foils any plans to sweep it under a rug before tainting every senator with his bile. Giving this criminal the privledge to create this mess makes the party look weak.
I think it's Senate Dems who don't have a chance
December 31, 2008 - 11:35 ET by Prester JohnBlago is still the governor and he did what he was supposed to do. I don't see how the Dems can keep Burris out.
If they go to court to do so alot of Dems stay home in 2010 and a Republican gets elected.
I guess they could try and ignore Burris since the Dems have such a majority it's hard to see how Burris' vote would really mean anything, but that would probably also lead to alot of Dems staying home in 2010.
Keep up the great work Harry!!

You're right, Jack. He is no better than Blago. Frankly, I hope Blago beats this thing, if, for no other reason, it cuts this egomaniac Fitzgerald off at the knees. He's a corrupt prosecutor who has been permitted to abuse his position with the full backing of the press. He's cultivated a reputation as a righteous Elliot Ness-type, when he's just another Mike Nifong with good PR. I can't wait for Libby and Conrad Black to cut this guy's reputation wide open after that tool Blago beats the rap.
I'm also looking forward to the street fight between Blago and Reid. Hopefully Reid will emerge as damaged goods by the time his 2010 re-election bid takes place (the fact that he hasn't already been defeated is sad enough).

So -- can I predict some actual gaffes Biden will make in 2009, as President Obama reluctantly finds "harmless" things for him to do...
At a CAIR fundraiser, Biden greets the crowd with: "I'd just like to say Shalom to all my Muslim friends..."
Meeting with David Patterson the blind the Governor of New York, Biden offers to show him the photos he took at the inauguration.
On a visit to India Biden congratulates the Indian people on their great curries, and their innate ability to run Gas Stations, before grabbing Sonia Gandhi and kissing her smack on the lips.

I predict Burris will land in PEBO's former senate seat.
December 31, 2008 - 16:05 ET by R D HelmDespite the lofty rhetoric from Spineless Harry and his fellow boneless chickens, at the end of the day, he and his party are so beholden to black voters, who they have hoodwinked for decades into voting for them, they will eventually cave in like cheap tents.
Now that Bobby Rush, and some others, are shuffling the race-card deck in front of God and everybody, which will serve to energize blacks all over the state, as well as certain parts of the country, I don't see how Burris will not eventually get the seat.
From what I have been hearing from some Chicago locals, this Burris guy is almost as much of an empty suit as PEBO.

Regarding Blago-Gate, this thing is getting so big that the MSM has no choice but to talk about it. The elections are over and nothing else is going on. So, try as they might, they can't wait it out like they did with Edwards. Speaking of which, we haven't heard a peep about Edwards have we? I know that they are going to try to minimize any damage done to the good name of Obama. I hope that Fitzgerald leans on Blago hard enough to dig up some dirt on Obama. What about Rezko? Both of them should have so much dirt on him that the stench of corruption will stay with him for his entire administration.
