There's some good news out of the EU this evening that I wanted to pass along. This might make your Sunday a little brighter, and (fingers crossed) could supply some much needed stability to global markets this week.
First, European leaders agreed to some steps to shore up their banking system and credit markets:
The key measures announced were: a pledge to guarantee until the end of 2009 bank debt issues with maturities up to five years; permission for governments to buy bank stakes; and a commitment to recapitalize what the statement called ``systemically'' critical banks in distress.
This has been positively greeted by the electronic currency markets -- "The euro rose the most in three weeks against the dollar and the yen after European leaders agreed to guarantee bank borrowing and prevent big lenders from going under" -- as well as S&P 500 futures -- "Standard & Poor's 500 Index futures expiring in December added 36.6 points, or 4.1 percent, to 927.6 as of 8:58 a.m. in Tokyo."
Stay tuned.

October 12, 2008 - 19:45 ET by Noel Sheppardb,
I'm interested in seeing whether anything can stop the collapse.
The thing to bear in mind is that our markets are much more complicated than they were in 1929. I won't elaborate, because that should be obvious.
The selling now is just a mad dash for cash. Financial institutions and hedge funds are responsible for much of the volume. They've got to raise cash because they're in the middle of the storm. Furthermore, the financial institutions now know that they better have ample liquidity or their stocks will get so low that the government will just take them out. In the end, that's been a dangerous precedent.
As such, I'm wondering if any of these moves -- whether they're good or bad -- can stop the bleeding, or if the arteries have been so severed that there is no stopping it all from totally melting down. At that point, governments would be taking everything over anyway. Seems to me that's a fait accompli. Might as well let them have some now to see whether they can stop the hemorrhaging rather than risk they'll own it all years from now when they're the only ones with money left.
Make sense? ns

Hell, I've heard that even the Chinese have stopped lending us money.
Let's face it, with the federal government going around bailing out everything and everyone that is in trouble, and with even more bailouts probably coming, requiring money we all know the government doesn't really have, then you know there is a problem.
You'll know for sure if people stop buying bonds, as they only do so with the reasonable expectation they are going to get their money back, plus a little more, at some point.
If they decide the feds will never have the money to do so, then its game over.

October 12, 2008 - 20:55 ET by Noel SheppardDave,
We're broke? Really?
So, why has the dollar absolutely exploded in value since this crisis began? http://futures.tradi...
And I imagine you've noticed that the price of T-bills has exploded in the past four weeks even to a point where folks were actually paying interest to own them?
In the past four weeks, there has been a mad dash out of everything and into US Treasuries. Think this would be the case if everybody thought we were going broke? ns
Okay, maybe not stone cold broke, but we can't be far from it.
October 12, 2008 - 22:55 ET by R D HelmNoel,
Do we really know what the actual deficit numbers really are?
In just the last month we have seen the federal government fork out over $1 Trillion in bailouts alone, and we know there are going to be more coming. There is also what has to be a fairly sizeable drop in revenues to the federal government because of the current down-turn in the economy.
Pelosi and Co. are chomping at the bit to blow another $150B out the door in the form of yet another stimulus package. Now, I realize most of this will be money that will be going back into the economy, but its still money that will add to the deficit and has to be covered at some point down the road. The U.S. Treasury isn't a bottomless pit, after all.
When you factor in all the off-budget and un-funded mandate garbage (does anyone have a clue how much that is?) not to mention the looming SS and other entitlement program train wrecks looming on the horizon, you have to wonder that just perhaps we are in a little deeper than we realize. There aren't enough wealthy people on the planet to cover that, much less in this country.
I don't think the current market slide is ready to bottom out yet, either. I watched it as it appeared to level out somwhat on Friday, even getting my hopes up for a moment or two there, but just before the close, it resumed its downward slide.
Yes, everybody is running for T bills right now, but if they begin to feel that they are throwing their money down a hole, they might stop even that and begin cutting slits in their mattresses, just like my grandparents did during the Depression. They never regained their lost confidence in banks, and to a certain extent, the federal government.
Now I am beginning to wonder if people's confidence in the federal government today is not on similarly shaky ground. I can tell you mine certainly is.
In a word, I'm scared. :-O

About the only bright spot I see anywhere is the current slide in oil prices, but even that may not withstand a move by OPEC to reduce the supply.
Let's face it, we have hosed ourselves royally in not developing our own oil resources to their fullest extent. What is worse we have demonstrated to OPEC that we are willing to go along with $4/gal gas in this country.

October 13, 2008 - 07:58 ET by kilrodBack in 1990, the Government seized the Mustang Ranch brothel in Nevada for tax evasion and, as required by law, tried to run it.
