For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: as yesterday's Sarah Palin Open Thread received from what I can tell the greatest number of reads and comments of any OT since we started doing OTs, I wanted to keep this same topic today.
As you've now had 24 hours to think about this pick, as well as hear and read other opinions, how are you feeling about this choice as we head into the convention on Monday?

August 30, 2008 - 12:34 ET by PopularTech- McCain graduated 894th out of 899 in his class at the United States Naval Academy
Thanks for the heads up I missed that one.
Pathetic
August 30, 2008 - 22:17 ET by UnsaneFunny thing is that ALL 899 of those graduates were STILL called "Sir" or "Ensign" when they graduated.
You are simply going to have to try harder to hammer McCain. And I'm not his biggest fan, either. Just a Reservist who knows what a b!#$h it is to even qualify for the Naval Academy, much less graduate from there even at the bottom of your class.

Poor PopTech is still pissing his pants. As a Libertarian, shouldn't you be on the road with the other Paulbots to Tardstock '08?
Paul Bots?
August 30, 2008 - 12:35 ET by PopularTechOh you have me confused with someone else, everyone is doing that the last few days.
I rarely get my douchebags
August 30, 2008 - 13:10 ET by Roger the ShrubberI rarely get my douchebags confused. You are not a Paulbot? You are the the average Ben-Franklin-dressing, moms'-basement-living Libertarian man-boobed loser? My apologies.
For somebody who has been tossing around insults these past two days, you sure do handle criticism like a little girl.
Wow, talk about reflexive whines
August 30, 2008 - 13:34 ET by sarcasmoThe only possible relevance is that Palin's not obsessively anti-Ron Paul like some of the more obvious big government RINOs, but I guess that was enough for a whine...

August 30, 2008 - 15:08 ET by Roger the ShrubberMust have hit close to home, since you had to chime in. Did I ruin your surprise? Were you going to dress up as John Adams or Ben Franklin? The Statue of Liberty, perhaps?
Great work linking to MTV News, btw.
I know, I know. You will now do the same ole Sarky dance, droning on and on about how you have the right to be a douche and post what you want because you are such a man, and nobody can stop you, etc, etc, etc... Go ahead, have your fun, thump that chest, blah, blah, blah. I am going to have a nice day at a picnic, while you sit in mommy's basement getting that bald-headed wig ready for your big date with the other Paultards.
Have fun! Don't forget to wear your Pautard Chostkie Flair!
Uh, Whiner...
August 30, 2008 - 15:12 ET by sarcasmoI'm in Florida, where I'm staying. Your fantasies suggest YOU are the one spending too much time in basements. Get a life, quit whining about Republicans who want smaller government, and have some fun. I stand by all my words (and PopTech already got today's "I post what/where/how I want" schooling, so I don't need to school you on it again).

I'd put Gov. Palin's resume
August 30, 2008 - 14:37 ET by Ten7sI'd put Gov. Palin's resume up against Obama's resume anyplace, anywhere. The only executive experience that Obama has is with the Chicago Annenburg Challenge, where he worked quite closely with a homegrown terrorist named Bill Ayers. And to top it off, Obama and Ayers' endeavour was a dismal failure.

Why you'd LOVE AK
August 30, 2008 - 21:01 ET by UnsaneYou ought to be in AK, not FL. Pot is legal there up to 1 oz. Of course, the representative of the local Libertarian party in Anchorage, I trust, is still roaming town trying to get people to sign a petition to get the Libertarians put on the AK ballot. He'd probably have more luck if he clearly wasn't a total burnout. Or if the Libertarians there would at least make a small effort to be presentable to the public. (Don't cry to me about how hard it is either: there is an AK Independence Party on the ballot there.)
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

JMR
The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.
Attribution
August 31, 2008 - 07:17 ET by UnsaneI attribute that to two things you lack:
1) A powerful memory. I didn't cut and paste ANY of that, I remember such data.
2) I lived in Anchorage and was accosted by said individual in multiple venues in town and thus know of what I speak. Have you? Can you disprove ANY of what I said, oh holy SUPREME EXPERT???
Had I been an AK voter - I have always been registered in TX - I probably would have signed his petition. But this was before I met a Libertarian online named Sarcasmo. Why would I support a Libertarian cause, even those I actually agree with, with people like you infesting the party?
I know that this is supposed to be a one-party state and all where the Libertarians rule the land in perpetuity from coast to coast and all, but unfortunately there are tons of Libertarians like him (and you) who leave extremely negative impressions of the party, and apparently none of you know or care (and I am inclined to believe the latter).
Please continue to vomit your vitriol and bile onto the board.
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

On no wait, don't answer that. You never get tired of saying how right you are. In all our debates, you have never called me names once, and I respect that, but it seems to me you can't stop telling people how right your are. Look at your Tax thread, seems you can't seem to every look at anyones point of view except for your own and love to belittle one that dares think differently from you.

Enlighten me
August 30, 2008 - 23:15 ET by UnsaneHmmmm...now, in order to satisfy your desire for me to self-criticize and otherwise show that I am in fact human, I recently stupidly destroyed my glasses with one of my elbows. So, my eyesight may be a little on the poor side...
...but at what point have I repeatedly claimed I am right???
You seem to have less a problem with my ego (which rest assured in nonexistent as it is repeatedly tempered - disagree if you wish, you haven't seen what life has dished at me the past two years) than the fact that I challenge your religious tenets repeatedly with views I hold in confidence. Rather than be all ticked off that I do in fact repeatedly challenge that religious dogma you so hold dear, at least stop and consider what I say. I'm not out looking for converts...why should I be? I'm not running for office, I don't hate myself that much. But if I do write something that forces you (or others) to think...well, that's quite enough for me.

August 30, 2008 - 23:26 ET by shawn228I made the comment about your ego, because of the way you express your points to people you don't agree with. You belittle, them and are pretty condesending.
You can disagree with me anytime you like, I'm just tired of saying I believe in individual freedoms like pot and euthanasia, and you comment is always , the countrys that allow that are going nowhere" No where do you actually back up the fact that the USA will go nowhere, you just say those countrys are going nowhere.
Hey loud and clear, those countries are going nowhere, I get it. Just wanted to know if you might be tired of repeating that line over and over.

So defensive this evening
August 30, 2008 - 23:42 ET by UnsaneReally? The United States is going nowhere? Sure. Nevermind that this is where repeated advancements, innovations and inventions that can and do change the world occur. Nevermind that since many of the world's industrialized nations decided long ago to coddle, baby, and pamper (and enable) their poor out of "compassion", THIS is the country where medical advancements occur. Nevermind that THIS is the country that can and does globally project power.
Sure, we have issues, but they pale compared to those of other countries. That includes the debt. Yeah, our national debt sucks, but Japan has a debt that is 194% of its GDP.
Anyways, I didn't even bring this up, YOU did. Please go over this entire THREAD and find a place where I specifically used my catchphrase. And no, I don't mind bringing up the same thing over and over. Reagan didn't. Check a speech of his in 1964 and compare it to ones he gave in 1984. Very little change. Because he was principled. He had his, I have mine.
Belittling, condescending, etc etc etc...all in the mind of the beholder as far as I am concerned. If anything, Leftist talking points and Leftist ideology are belittling and condescending to me. (Unsane, you clearly cannot take care of yourself; what you REALLY need is a government nanny!!!) But do you see me whining? No. Just fighting back. With both barrels.
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Going nowhere
August 31, 2008 - 07:22 ET by UnsaneWrong, shawn, I didn't use it at all. You are the only one whining about it. YOU are the one who brought it up. I wasn't going to use it this time around though I reserve and deserve the right to use it at anytime. August 31, 2008 - 00:29 ET by candanceOne thing that annoys me is people who claim alliance with a political party when having no idea what that party stands for. Pop is in for a rude awakening when he realizes what libertarians actually want.
For example in chat the other night Shawn was asking Pop about the FDA. Me being a good conservie, I believe the FDA is just another garden variety government program with too much power. It shocked me to see Pop defend the FDA like it was the FBI or sumpin.
Pop might be a lot of things, but a libertarian he aint.

I don't think he came this unhinged when McCain became the obvious nominee.

McCain rocked back Obama with this and if she gives a good performance Wednesday night at the convention it's gonna' hurt a little in ObamaLand.

I don't understand how the Dems can compare the experience of their PRESIDENTIAL candidate with the experience of the Republican's VP candidate's pick...apples to oranges...doesn't work.
Whooo!
August 30, 2008 - 11:08 ET by DontFeedTheTrollsI know very little about Palin, hope she lives up to the high expectations expressed here and elsewhere.
Watching her and McCain at her acceptance speech I did notice the stark, black and white, difference between the 2008 Republican and Democrat sides. The Democrats always, ALWAYS, attack, attack, attack, almost always mention Bush, Katrina, Abu Graib, etc.. The Republican side? Palin praised Clinton, Ferraro, etc., not a single negative word, no attacks. Wow, what a difference. Can't wait for the debates.

praise for both sides
August 30, 2008 - 11:29 ET by nicholas nicklebyactually, almost every speech at the Dem Convention praised John McCain as a war hero. The most they did to attack him was to say that he doesn't understand the situation of the average American--the Obama campaign has never attacked McCain for being involved in the Keating S&L scandal nor for cheating on his first wife.
nicholas
August 30, 2008 - 13:37 ET by MrShy"Obama campaign has never attacked McCain for being involved in the Keating S&L scandal nor for cheating on his first wife."
Nor would they or should they, as you can bet not a peep about the endless list of shady associations and highly questionable decisions in Obama's past -- must I list them for you? -- will be brought up by the McCain camp.
But that's not even the right counter argument to be making, anyway. We're talking about the endless attacks they make on all things GOP currently. Just look at the main ticket's ("old politics" Joe and "no more of the same old polit.... wait, um..." Barry) AND both Clinton's speeches.
Suck it up and admit that every night and every speech at the DNC convention was littered with anti-Bush and anti-McCain rhetoric, in a desperate attempt to fill the void that exists of any concrete ideas and values in their party.
Liberals truly live in an alternate world, that's apparently very comfy to them.

whoa--i didn't say no one attacked McCain/Bush
August 30, 2008 - 14:03 ET by nicholas nicklebyMrShy, you are right, the Dems did attack Bush and McCain. We agree on that. The issue that was raised above [by DontFeedtheTrolls] was that the Dems ONLY attacked. All I said was that the Dems--in almost every speech that I saw--had nice things to say about McCain's military record.
(This is a minor issue, but I wanted to raise it because, frankly, a lot of people talk about the news without bothering to watch it. For instance, General Company below asks how many "USA!" chants there were at the DNC. Now, as an informed citizen, I watched the DNC, just as I'll watch the RNC, and I think other people should, too--and if General Company had watched, he would have seen a few "USA!" chants over the four days.)
Now, as to your issue of Obama's past shady deals, the only thing that I've seen was a flurry of Rezko-related material right after McCain's "I don't remember how many houses I have" gaffe, and that was from McCain campaign employees. As Obama was cleared of any wrong-doing... well, yes, I would like you to list some other shady associations he's been involved with. And, after that, I'd also like you, as an informed citizen, to list a number of shady deals McCain has been involved in. (Actually, the Keating scandal and the Rezko scandal are funny to compare: Obama and McCain both were cleared, but both said something like "yeah, it was stupid of me to do something like that, if only because it looked bad.") Maybe neither of these guys are pure, and as informed citizens, it's our duty to be informed about these issues. Don't you agree?
One of the stark contrasts
August 30, 2008 - 12:04 ET by HermanoOne of the stark contrasts between the two parties that I have noticed:
When Obama speaks, his supporters chant O bam a and wave Obama signs.
When McCain and Palin spoke, their supporters chant USA and wave American flags.

once again, a correction
August 30, 2008 - 12:48 ET by nicholas nicklebyin fact, during the convention, 80k Democrats did chant "USA" (among other things).
if you don't see people chanting "McCain," that's probably because (a) his name is less chantable (with two syllables, you'd have to chant it to a pretty fast beat or draw the syllables out or add a third--like "John" or "hey") and (b) many conservative Republicans don't really like/trust him all that much.

2."He’s desperate."

August 30, 2008 - 11:49 ET by celatorIt's 24 hours after Gov. Palin was named VP choice for the ticket
and I am still extremely pleased, for all the reasons cited by others.
I
did notice one characteristic in how she presents herself that will
confound, anger and intimidate the MSM and the D's: her ability to
speak directly to people, and resonate something very positive in them.
I felt it. She's got the Reagan gift, very rare indeed, to speak over
and through the MSM filtering system. That's a rare ability, and
extremely powerful.
I did get one of those Rasmussen telephone
surveys last night. After all the usual stuff--age, party affiliation,
intention to vote, etc-- the key questions were about Gov. Palin. Did
she help the ticket, was I more likely to vote for McCain because she
was on the ticket, etc. So they are tracking this closely.

Thus, the heart beat away comment...they are scared, and they should be. This is obviously the stronger ticket...and they never saw it coming...Hey Dems!, if McCain is so old and decrepit, how did he just roundhouse kick you in the back of the head?...

August 30, 2008 - 12:51 ET by Free StinkerThat is a Specious argument.
Her attorney general told her any bill she signed would be immediately over-turned by the Alaska State Supreme Court which had just ruled in favor of same-sex benefits.
I guess you would have preferred if she made Alaska spend taxpayers $$$s on a losing court battle.

Popular Tech, I agree about Hucksterbee
August 30, 2008 - 13:29 ET by jefflebowskiIt has always been interesting to me that all these "men of God" spend so much of their time bashing religion.
Common
courtesy dictates showing respect for something that someone else holds
sacred (if they're not flying planes into buildings). I've also been
very dubious when somebody makes their living off of religion. Would
they do it if they weren't paid? Interesting point, a Mormon friend
told me that there is no paid clergy in their church. All the
positions are voluntary. Would Hucksterbee or Benny Hinn be "men of
God" if they weren't making a fortune? Me thinks not.
Romney was my man and it didn't bother me one bit that he is a Mormon. They seem to be very honorable people to me.

First, congratulations to Sarah Palin, she is an excellent pick, and congratulations to Ole Mac for his brilliance in making the pick, i be leive they will win.!!
Best i can tell Sarah is everything a liberal despises; She is smart, educated, successfull, a good mother of 5, a good wife, a Christian, Pro-Life, Gov. of Alaska, lifetime member of the NRA,, former top athelete, former beauty queen, and a good decent person. She accomplished all this on her own right, without the help of "now", affirmitive action, the feminist, liberals, and least of all the dims. Exactly the kind of woman liberals love to hate so i expect the libs to do everything they can to destroy her. She is not beholden to the libs for her success and they can't stand that. She is an example of what the U.S.A. used to stand for, self reliant, self sufficient, and independent. She has made her way simply by standing up for what is good and right and decent, standing on the simple and solid ground of the truth. She has my admiration and respect.

Palin backed Alaskan windfall-profits tax
August 30, 2008 - 16:06 ET by Free StinkerHere are the facts for those who do not make their decisions based upon headlines alone.
Palin changed the tax system (now called ACES) after finding that the previous tax plan wasn't going to bring in nearly as much $$ as the former governor said (lied) it would. Not being a dupe of the Oil companies, Sarah Palin had the tax law changed, and also had public forums for people to comment upon this.
Update: I noted some of this previously here: Sarah Palin is not afraid of "Big Business"
Here is the first apragraph from the article: JUNEAU -- The State of Alaska got about $1.5 billion richer Friday -- and all of it thanks to a governor unafraid of the powerful oil industry, a handful of convicted felons, and a state Legislature that opted not to vote along party lines.

Reminds me of an Air America forum, where substance and ideas are rare but insults are endless. And NO it's not just you, it's the combination of the stuff flying back and forth between you and several others that is just lengthening the topics, making things harder for everyone to read, taking up space, and otherwise getting in the way of civil discussion. August 31, 2008 - 10:09 ET by Reality Check...that McCain was probably the only Republican primary candidate that could win in an admittedly hostile political environment;
...that his selection of Palin shows that he is serious about winning;
...that the overwhelming positive response by grassroots Republicans shows clearly that the Republican party believes that a women's place is at the helm of this country;
...that the left's petty and sexist tactics during the first 24 hours show, equally clearly, how they truly feel about women who don't support their belittling agenda;
...and finally, that the race has been turned upside-down. The Republicans are the maverick, Washington-outsider party, up against a Daley Democrat and a lifetime DC partisan.
Delicious. Simply delicious.
