It's Sarah Palin, folks (photo courtesy RTTNews).
For many months, a LOT of NB members have been pointing to her as the best choice. Some of those unhappy with McCain have said that putting her on the ticket would make them vote for him.
Clearly, this is a HUGE move to the right for the ticket. How are you feeling about this choice?

August 29, 2008 - 12:15 ET by matthewleonmartinAmerica is laughin at the Obama campaign for trying to raise the issue of experience.
Everything they say, makes John Q. Undecided say: "Gee, isn't Obama just as inexperienced?"
When they say, she was a mayor just 2 years ago...well what was Obama! A state legeslature 2 years ago.
When they say, she has no foreign policy experience...well what does Obama have! None.
This was a checkmate move. The only thing that can derail it is if there is a corruption scandle, but you have to believe that she was vetted big time. So I'm not worried.

August 29, 2008 - 18:13 ET by UnsaneIn fairness, I am merely repeating a fact that was presented by one of my favorite posters: Free Stinker, and his amazing "Sarah Palin Fact Of The Day" thread in the forums. Free, if you are reading this, I grant you this hat tip.
This being said, the fact that she has repeatedly gone to the AOR is NOT lost on me at all. Nor is it lost on me that she, the governor, made these journeys, while Obama, the United States Senator (who by the way confirms the appointments of freaking GENERALS and ADMIRALS) only went there when political pressure forced him to.

August 29, 2008 - 18:18 ET by UnsaneAs a native Texan, a Hutchison VP pick would have tugged my heartstrings like nothing else. And I really wanted Palin to snag another gubernatorial term and then make a lot of noise.
But now that it has happened that Palin is the VP candidate...I like. And in reality, she can be groomed for the next step up. Wherever she lacks experience can be worked on.
I suspect that we are going to see some great things from Mrs. Palin. The next Reagan? Maybe not. But perhaps the American "Iron Lady". :-)

Classy bunch of democrats, huh. Always have been, always will be. Good grief!
Sarah Palin has more class in her little finger than all of the democrat shills combined. I thought it was absolutely brilliant of her to acknowledge both Hillary & Ferraro in a positive manner this morning.

So true
August 29, 2008 - 19:06 ET by BlondeI wasn't thrilled with McCain as the nominee, but I think other than Giuliani, he's the only (R) who can actually win this year with the mood the nation is in. I'm amazed at how astute he's been throughout the campaign, and he seems to be peaking at the right time.
And the funniest part of the Palin nomination, to me, is that the dems are all going crazy that it is a pander to women. Dumba**es. McCain had to please us, the conservatives. Which I think he's done today, in spades.
Unsane said it earlier, an American Iron Lady in training. I like it. I'd rather have Sarah Palin's finger on the trigger, tomorrow, than Obama's in another twelve years after he's gained a bit of real experience.

August 29, 2008 - 11:16 ET by mbuelThat claim is laughable for a number of reasons I'll break them down here:
1) Obama is the lead ticket. Palin is the VP ticket where she can learn.
2) Palin has held an executive position in Alaska since 2002. In 2002, Obama was a state senator voting against the BAIPA. As well as being a "community organizor"

Interestingly, the Brits' equivalent of Echalon would know for fact exactly who's tipping off UK "punter" buddies from the McCain campaign. My advice to Jack was mere speculation, but I was for a "safety bet" on Romney and then a speculation bet on Palin, and I said Palin was probably McCain's best choice strategically considering all the annoyed Hillary fans out there. Anyway, you could see the information leaking out as odds went down on Palin and the bookies tried to stay "balanced" by vastly upping their Romney odds this morning.

August 29, 2008 - 16:19 ET by sarcasmoJust fascinated with gambling, especially forbidden gambling. ;) The news media has always had London bureaus, so they've always known those London odds internally (and for free!) but they've always paid Gallup & Roper to disturb my suppertime with phone surveys which I won't answer because Gallup & Roper are both unwilling to pay me anything. It's annoying.
Those London bookies are willing to pay people, all right, but they'd want me to pay them, first. ;) Of course, it's illegal for me to gamble on our elections with the friendly bookies as a US citizen, even though my placing a hypothetical bet on Palin with a Romney kicker would have had no effect on my own eventual vote. Anyway, back in the early '90s, it was much harder to get US Presidential odds directly off the 'net, but I always managed, and then reproduced them for others' amusement. I'm still seeking an ancient WSJ article about the subject, and I especially want nonexistant (AFAIK) long-term graphs of bookie political odds data vs pollster data over time.

BRILLIANT
August 29, 2008 - 11:29 ET by Gat New YorkWhy Sarah Palin?
1. She is a state governor (which is far more experience than Obama has – actually her experience as Mayor of a small village would be more experience than THE CHOSEN ONE).
2. She is McCain's way out of his initial position on ANWR.
3. She was a commentator and is a great speaker.
4. She is a maverick like McCain and outside the Beltway
5. She is a solid conservative and a hunter
6. Her oldest son is being deployed to Iraq next month.
7. She will attract major women's vote including PUMAs
8. She has a down syndrome child who she could have aborted but did not believe in it (juxtapose that to Obama not wanting to punish his daughter with an unwanted pregnancy).
9. She can beat Obama in a b-ball game of one-on-one
10. And she is better looking than Obama.
McCain has been running one of the most brilliant campaigns I have ever seen.
This will be game-set-match and without superficial Roman columns.

Wait and watch...the left is going to go after Palin on this and this...and more to come.
I am worried about this...and have said so now and then before with a link on this site about all of this brouhaha.
Palin was born just down the road from me in Sandpoint Idaho, my nearest semi-big city.
I am glad the msm were surprised, haven't much of a clue about her, but this investigation she is going through, the msm will make huge hay out of...I dread it already.
As far as Wasilla and her being Mayor, although a very tiny town, not far from Anchorage... it is more experience than Obama has had...let alone her being a Gov. for a short time.
She is pro-life and pro-ANWR, which we shall see if it helps McCain change his stubborn mind about drilling there..which is much needed and been stopped by the likes of people like McCain for way too many years.
Time will tell with the destruction the msm will do if they can.

August 29, 2008 - 12:24 ET by Chris Normanbt, I understand your concern about the "investigation", but I think that McCain must have vetted her thoroughly and concluded there was nothing there. The fact is, we can't innoculate ourselves against attacks from the media, we can only hope that a majority of the people know their bias and have given up actually listening to them and heeding them.

Despite the omnipresent
August 29, 2008 - 13:17 ET by Chris NormanDespite the omnipresent posts from Pop Tech, I think McCain just energized the party and there will be a lot more enthusiasm at the convention.
As for Global Warming, I'm beginning to think that except for some brave politicians, like Sen Inhofe (sp), it's almost a sacred cow now - like Social Security. They can pay lip service to it, as far as I'm concerned, as long as they don't try taking away my incandescent bulbs.
Hell, a lot of the GOP pols say they oppose abortion, but have done very little to stop or slow it down. Turn about is called for here.

She's pro-life (a non-negotiable for me), a reformer, pro-gun, female, and breathes new life into McCain's campaign. I was so sweating that McCain would pick a pro-choice VP!

August 29, 2008 - 11:32 ET by goldbarIf McCain thinks his pick will attract Hillary voters, he's wrong--again. The women who will vote for an anti-women's rights ticket are few within the democratic party. Many conservatives are already bristling at his pick because now they can't pull the experience card. On top of that, Palin has a record of aggressively going after corruption IN HER OWN PARTY, which I'm sure won't bode well inside the Beltway. The left is cheering this pick!

It's the same old GOP nothing has changed, vote Obama for change yada yada yada.
Now that Palin is VP they can't say that. And if you think they will go after her inexperience and succeed then you and I disagree.
Once they start stating her inexperience it will reflect more on Obama. At least Palin was in charge of an entire state, instead of just representing the voters of state like Obama.
They still have McCain's experience to tout, and Palin as the face of change. Its a win win situation.

Anyone who claims Palin is inexperienced is SEXIST since Obama and Biden have zero executive experience running a bureaucacy. There is no way around that one since Palin has more executive experience as mayor and governor than all three males: McCain, Obama and Biden, COMBINED.

What a typical obtuse leftist view. Yes, those evil sexist Republicans want to infringe on a "woman's right" to have an abortion and don't think the federal governement should spend American tax dollars to fund female owned businesses.

discrimination against minorities = evil, discrimination against whites = good
funding that goes toward our military = evil, funding that discriminates in favor of women and minorities = good
equality under the law = evil

August 29, 2008 - 11:32 ET by LionKingConstitutionally speaking, I do not think she is qualified to be the VP choice. I was a big Condi advocate, but I had to change my stance. This is by no means me saying that a woman cannot or should not, but more a question of law.
Remember, woman did not originally have the right to vote. Granting them the right to vote did not by de facto give them the right to hold office. The qualifications for being POTUS specifically mentions "he". The VPOTUS must meet the same qualifications. In fact, any member of congress that is female is in violation of the Constitution since any member could potentitally be in line to succeed the President.
Having said all of that, politically speaking, I think the choice of Sarah Palin is a GREAT choice.

Can you quote me where it says specifically that women cannot run for office? And so what if the pronoun "he" is used? "He" is often used as a neutral in English. "She" is not merely used to indicate one is female, but also as a way to make such specific.
This is behavior much like that of a Leftist who sees what he wants to see in the Constitution.

September 1, 2008 - 23:32 ET by SchnikeysI would say that I am personally much more interested in interpreting the Constitution more literally than using "he" as a "bendable" word.

September 1, 2008 - 06:30 ET by UnsaneYes, I have actually read the Constitution. I must have at least 50 copies in my home. Hence my very reasoned response to you.

Maybe you should instead ask yourself if you are too smart by half.
It is absolutely fascinating to hear people like you call me "liberal". Let me remind you again that YOU, not me, are on record saying that we should charge the affluent more in taxes because "they can afford it". If that isn't Leftist language I don't know what is.

Are you trying to PROVE to me that you are a blithering idiot? I really want to be totally wrong about that but you are NOT helping me come up with another conclusion.
One more thing...don't you, being the Constitutional Expert and all, want to make this whole business of popular elections for the electors that vote for President go away? After all, last I checked, there is NO provision in the Constitution allowing for that.
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

September 1, 2008 - 10:26 ET by lotrI know with today's politically correct "gender-neutral" personal pronoun usage one may argue "strict interpretation" means that "he = male", but non-PC English usage (i.e., the usage in force during the writing of the Constitution) prescribes "he" to be a neutral pronoun when used generically (i.e., not referring to a specific person, which is the case here). Thus, a strict interpretation of the Constitution allows the possibility of females in elected office.
Good Choice.

No it wouldn't really come as a shock RR, because what gets lost here and in the public mindset thanks to our liberal educators and MSM, is that conservatives are actually the trail-blazers when it comes to firsts.
The GOP is the party that freed the slaves, staunchly supported civil rights, no surprise why MLK was a Republican. The Bush admin. is the first to put not only African Americans in positions of power, but one of them being a strong black woman at that.
I believe Sarah Palin is an excellent choice and that she would make a great president.

How is she going to discuss national issues with Biden? The VP has to do one thing in the race, win the under-card debate. Where is her experience debating national issues?

This motivates me to do it again. I'll go work in the battleground states now. I'm going to find out what I can do. In 2004 it really made me feel a lot better. I am pleased beyond words. She is what you see, it seems to me. Unlike the mysterious Obama who is still dancing as hard as he can to disguise who he really is, even at this late date.
Now we have a clear contrast between the R's and D's in this race. More than ever, the Obama/Biden ticket will be shown as the phony, neurotic, America-hating crypto-Marxists we know they are.
The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

A Brilliant Choice!
August 29, 2008 - 12:14 ET by packmanJohn McCain has indeed made a brilliant choice for his running mate and I believe the Obama camp will regret not choosing a woman for the Democratic VP candidate. That has created an enormous vacuum within the Obama movement, a vacuum that Senator McCarin has moved quickly to fill. Governor Palin will energize the right as well as drawing those women who wanted so badly to see Hillary Clinton as a candidate. This is a major strategic move by the McCain team and I believe Governor Palin will stir the hearts of a patriotic America. BTW, did you notice the American flag on her lapel? She is definitely my kind of candidate, and I think conservative America will agree.

Let's contrast that with Sir Barry Hussein Obam-uh-uh-uh .. he served a total of 140 days as U.S. Senator. Prior to that, he was a State Senator, which is NOT a full-time job! Prior to that, he was a "community activist" in an area of Chicago that is every much (more so?) the hellhole it was BEFORE he was "community activist!"
Advantage: Palin (and she's not even the head of the ticket!)
To address another poster: this WASN'T an attempt to "get" the Hillary voters. Most of those who said they wouldn't vote for Obam-uh-uh-uh WILL vote for Obam-uh-uh-uh. Ouch. The truth hurts.
WOW!
August 29, 2008 - 12:56 ET by PrairieSkyIf nothing else, McCain's choice of Sarah Palin shows that he doesn't mind going out on a limb. I admit that I have mixed feelings about this choice. While I LOVE the idea of having a woman, finally, on a Republican presidential ticket, I am concerned that choosing Gov. Palin will be construed as a stunt just to get the undecided women's vote. While I think that there may be some truth to this, I also believe that Gov. Palin wasn't chosen only because she is a woman.
Gov. Palin appears to be a pretty tough cookie, and her record as governor and a conservative seems solid. However, her age and fairly short term as governor are problematic for McCain. One of the big sticks that Republicans have been using to whack Obama with has been his age and lack of experience, and now many will say the same applies to Gov. Palin. There are two big differences here, though. While both Obama and Palin are young, with relatively short governmental resumes, at least Palin has executive experience as governor, and most importantly, she is not at the top of the ticket.
Overall, while a fairly big surprise, I think the choice of Gov. Palin is a good, and gutsy, choice. I just hope that enough Americans agree.

August 29, 2008 - 13:04 ET by c5thenI stumbled upon the announcement this morning without knowing what was going on. I hadn't checked any news since getting up and didn't have a clue as to what the 'big news' was.
After listening to McCain introduce her, and hearing her speach, I have to say that I am very impressed with her. She could not have had more than a few days to prepare and she was extremely comfortable on that stage. I like her style, her demenor, and her resume.
I'm not sure if it will be enough to make me vote for the Republican ticket this go-round, but I am now in the ranks of the undecided. That is... undecided between McCain/Palin and Alan Keyes.

August 29, 2008 - 13:09 ET by BlazerThis isn't about choosing a woman.
Sarah Palin is a staunch conservative and reformer. She fires up the base and seriously undermines Obama's "change" message. She singlehandedly fought her own states "good-ol'-boy" network, and exposed corruption knocking the glad handers of our party and out of the system.
She is a renegade or a "Maverick" like McCain, but only in exposing improprieties in the GOP.
Plus it doesn't hurt that she is extremely, and I mean extremely, easy on the eyes. She has definite street-cred when it comes to conservatism and change.
Who knew our next Ronald Reagan might just be a wife and mother of five.

With that said if McCain/Palin wins come November, I would love to see a Palin/ Cantor ticket come 2012. Can you imagine the first women president and first Jewish vice president, both being staunch conservatives running for the Whitehouse? Unbeatable !

August 29, 2008 - 13:39 ET by QueenMumExcellent political gamesmanship on the part of the McCain campaign. But I can't help but be reminded of the Harriet Miers fiasco. I think the Dems will play up her inexperience despite Obama's thin resume. In the eyes of the average American, Obama's experience trumps Palin's if one merely considers his years spent in the Illinois legislature and the U.S. Senate. Obama couldn't have gotten as far as he has if people were more concerned about whether he had executive experience. And I would guess that many Americans consider the State of Alaska to be mostly a vast tundra populated primarily by wildlife and primitive natives. It will certainly be an interesting election cycle.
It's Obama -vs- McCain
August 29, 2008 - 14:02 ET by HelenSI don't really think it's logical to keep comparing Sarah Palin's experience or lack of to Obama's lack of. Obama is running against McCain not Sarah.
And what better person to introduce the rest of us ignorant rubes to the fine state of Alaska!? It's about time we found out what it's really like so some of the deluded and tiresome eco-types can finally shed their sentimental illusions about Alaska and realize it's not actually any better or worse than anywhere else and that drilling in ANWR won't deflate the planet or do any more harm there than it does in Saudi Arabia or Venezuela.
I am thrilled with this choice and I've been yelling out my car window and waving my thumbs-up at any and all, liberally offending as many people as I possibly can (did I mention I live in Fairfax, VA, which is nauseatingly close to DC?) Yeah, baby!

August 29, 2008 - 13:53 ET by SquonkamaticMcCain threw the progressive idiots who call themselves democrats and liberals a gorgeous, foxy, leggy slider that broke right over the home plate. She's only three years older than me, which amuses me even more than the 39 year old doctor who has become my physician. Good to see snappy, sharp looking people from my own age group not only accepting the mantle of responsibility but excelling in it. She will make a wonderful VP, wait until Sarkosky gets a load of those legs too. We'll have French troops fighting alongside of us all over the place.
One other subject sort of related that I have on my mind is Jimmuh Failure Carter's criticism of McCain "milking" his experiences as a POW as part of his qualifications. While it isn't the same as daily torture, having medical attention withheld, being paraded in front of cameras, and having to live on Vietnamese food for 5 1/2 years, I had to weather two semesters of Mrs. Emerson's math class back in the fifth grade and hesitate not to this day remind those who were aware of the woman what kind of a daily hell it was. Jimmuh served bravely, I guess, on a submarine and then farmed peanuts. He should STFU quickly and get back to hammering nails for HFH; I expect -- EXPECT -- John McCain to remind voters every day that he knows the cost of war in a very personal and painful way and will never take it for granted, something that Mr. Obama can not boast. It's also interesting that it was OK for John Failure Kerry to remind voters every chance of his tour of duty, I guess if you got shot down, beaten and tortured it isn't supposed to count.
If McCain wasn't unbeatable before he is now. The Obamarama is effectively over, time to dismantle the temple & come down from Mount Olympus.

August 29, 2008 - 15:17 ET by FoolicanAny attempt to ask PopularTech, who at my first impression was a fairly reputable poster, any question about Palin simply results in a bipolar retort. I await tomorrow when he'll post a humongous 1,000-link scripture detailing Palin's associated scandals, policies, etc.. His current writing as of today is unequivocally the most puerile garbage that I have ever read on any political forum, bar none, simply because of his inability to form a coherent, rational response. But what would I know? He probably voted for Ron Paul.
This was not the best pick, yes, but I am still satisfied with it
Edit: Relating to the topic, I am beside myself at the impeccable timming of all this - directly after Obama's barnburner speech at the Democratic convention. The media is literally being stretched like taffy.
Foolican....I have been reading with shock.....
August 29, 2008 - 16:49 ET by BEGRUNTthe way PT has been reacting to this. I dont understand it whatsoever. He usually has a very reasoned response, and cites his points........not over the top looney toons comments, constanly repeating himself, and attacking those who normally agree with him.....totally out of character. I just dont get it.

Sarah and Todd Palin need our prayers
August 29, 2008 - 15:21 ET by Hooterville DenizenI can relate to Sarah Palin. She's a small town person, appears to have values I understand, and has shown herself to be a hard working person that wants to "serve the common good."
I call myself a resident of "Hooterville" after the whistle stop on the TV sitcom Petticoat Junction. That's my town. I complain about it and love it at the same time. We work for the common good in terms of our schools, our roads and small businesses.
VP pick Palin may be a raw talent, but she is refreshing because she represents all the "regular" people, quality people, I have known and admired.
Now, the media will try to distroy her with insults and lies. She is braced for this, but Sarah and Todd Palin, and their children, NEED OUR PRAYERS. Honest to God, put these people in your heartfelt prayers everyday.

Sorry for the insensitivity. She's a fine choice, but McCain is not enough of a Republican for me. If only he could have picked Ronald Reagan... Sigh, all the good ones are gone.
Sarah Palin as McCain's VP pick
August 29, 2008 - 17:02 ET by SchnikeysPalin could be a very beneficial VP candidate.
But McCain needs to more clearly draw the distinctions on exactly how much (and in what ways) he will be confiding in Palin. Obviously, he is going to have to be the one carrying the weight as far as foreign policy is concerned. But as far as domestic policy (taxes, spending cuts, and energy) is concerned, he should not be afraid to let her speak a bit. In writing, Palin seems to be a vicious debater, and is good at expressing her views clearly and accurately. This will be good in offsetting McCain's very visible dumbassery (which I suspect emits naturally from the pores of his skin). But if he can get his act together- and I have my doubts- he can come out on top.
I do not believe that Palin's shortcomings in the realm of experience are as pertinent to her candidacy for VP as Obama's lack of experience is to his candidacy for a position that holds a hell of a lot more power than VP. I think that McCain and Palin have a lot of work to do. They need to be on their A-game from here on out. Palin has the perfect personality for it, but I doubt that McCain does.
Last night at the convention, Obama said something in his speech about how he doesn't want to have all these debates with McCain (I think) because Obama thinks there is nothing left to debate and that McCain is just being ignorant (or an implication of that to some degree). I'm sure that Palin will be able to see through this kind of bullsh*t and, when she does, I sure hope that she has the nerve to firmly elbow McCain and tell him to get on his crap- McCain will sure need it.

By the way...I knew before the sun set that the msm would bring up her ethic problems in Ak. and they did on Hardball and they are on with Gregory...of course they can't decide between the ethic probs or the inexperience...believe me the msm will make a huge thing of this...we know how they work.
For now, they are going to throw all kinds of differnet issues on the wall to see what sticks...abortion, inexperience, worked to want Buchanan in, and now the ethics hearing she is going through.

Sarah Palin
August 29, 2008 - 17:57 ET by UnsaneI woke up this morning to work yet some more on the apartment in a bid to "fire up" the study. I then heard on the radio that Palin was picked as the VP candidate. Then I flipped on Fox News and saw her speaking at Dayton. I was geeked!
I cannot wait for her to debate Biden...she is going to redefine what it means to b#!%h-slap someone. :-)
(The attractiveness part? Icing. The glasses are what do it for me. They make her look smarter. I love smart women. A woman with a brain who is willing to use her brain is a total turn-on for me. Anyways...)
Experience: as an executive, she cleans the clocks of both Obama and Biden. Obama and Biden both lack experience. Executive experience. And she has taken steps towards the foreign policy world: by visiting the troops in the AOR. Obama went too, but went kicking and screaming. He had from 2005 on to visit the troops in the AOR, but he only did so last month? Under pressure? Palin did it because she wanted to see the troops and see what they face, and what their issues are. THAT is leadership.
I was, and still am, on the record as saying I would rather her run for governor again in AK and then go for higher office. That being said, I like this pick. I think this does much to confound the Left. And whatever inexperience Palin DOES have can be solved with some grooming at the VP position. If the cards are played right, this will not be anywhere near the end of the Sarah Palin story.
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.
Wow
August 29, 2008 - 18:20 ET by Reality CheckI have had some issues with McCain over the years, mainly related to his opposition to tax cuts, and the way that the media fawned over him whenever he broke with the party line. However, I have to say this...
I think that by nominating McCain, the Republican party has given itself its very best chance to win the Presidency in an election that is more stacked against it than any election in recent years - and I also think that John McCain has dramatically improved the Republican party's chances this November by choosing Sarah Palin. She is a solid choice - she has more executive experience than Obama, Biden and McCain combined! She brings an excitement to the ticket that I don't think could have been matched by any other pick.
If we can get McCain-Palin elected this November, it will be an honor to be a part of the party that first elevated a woman to the Vice Presidency.
Senator McCain, excellent choice. Thank you. Governor Palin, thank you as well. It will be an honor to work to get both of you elected.
Reality Check
Sarah Palin
August 29, 2008 - 18:49 ET by afuelis the best choice McCain could have made. She is a woman of substance, action, power and strength. Just living in AK is a tough job but to excel there requires even more.
Some of her experience has not been mentioned but as Gov she regularly talks with Russia and Canada on fishing, shipping and other territorial issues, this massive NG pipeline deal was major project to finalize.
She has commercially fished with her husband which is back breaking work.
Also I caught a clip of her with AK National Guard were she takes up a M4/M16 with scope and hefts it up, clicks sight caps open all in a nice smooth operation right to her shoulder.
She is the real deal. Just what a conservative republican needs to be. Going forward she can provide a solid foundation for the Republican party.
This move has changed the election from a negative to a positive for me.
Go McCain
