For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Obama's speech.
Was it all it was cracked up to be -- and what fawning media are saying? Or, was it a bit boring and short on specifics as those involved in last night's NB chat felt?
Also, as we are within hours of McCain announcing his running mate, news outlets say it's not Romney or Pawlenty. Sarah Palin's numbers are screaming this morning at Intrade. Is it her?

The speech, my opinion
August 29, 2008 - 09:02 ET by maggieqpublicObama addressed what I consider to be his biggest political problem… he delivered the, “I am not a wuss” speech.
Now that Obama has put us on notice that he is a grown-up tough guy, we’ll see if that holds when he goes up man-to-man in the debates… or will he recede back into his non-confrontational self.

August 29, 2008 - 09:03 ET by BruzillaI thought the speech was ok, but he used a few too many of the stock Liberal solutions (more teachers/more pay, tax cuts, etc). I liked hearing a Lib finally start talking about personal responsibility, government not fixing everything, etc., but I really didn't like his comment where he said we can abide by the 2nd Ammendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals. That sounded to me like to do that he'll keep the AK-47s out of everyone's hands by banning them.
I thought the Dems did a much better job than expected with the staging of the event. The Republicans are going to work hard to top it.

Yes, that is great, but then they usually segue into government solutions for all the problems.
government not fixing everything is quite a statement from the man who previously said that people want to know how the government is going to help them in their daily lives.

Liberal pandering and attack propaganda. What country do the Dems live in that things are so terrible?
I live in a "Rustbelt" area with employment and housing issues, but anyone willing to work can find a job. There isn't a lot of investment occuring on Ohio's NorthCoast. Unemployment is generally higher in Ohio an Michigan than in other surrounding states but that is caused by pockets of old heavy industry and high taxation. Businesses have left the area to go to N. Carolina and other states that give them incentives to relocate.
Anyone with housing troubles needs to look at the choices they made when they believed what the bank or loan officer told them they could afford. I have friends that were told they could afford an $800,000 house. When they investigated further they found that they would have paid principle only for 20 years. They had the financial sense to spend much less with a 30 year standard mortgage and a house valued slightly over $100,000.
Just saying--pandering and propaganda

She's a maverick in the party, she's from a state that's at the center of the domestic drilling debate, she's a pro-lifer, she has a son who is about to be deployed to Iraq, and she's a woman obviously which would appeal to a lot of disgruntled Hillary supporters and female voters in general.

To which I said no, I like her because she has said and done things which shows me great promise. Social conservatives will love her due to her recent comments on abortion following the recent birth of her son. I like her because she is clearly pro-military.
(Though I will admit, at the extreme risk of my getting hammered by my fellow male NBers...I love the glasses. They make her look smart, and few things are as great and as powerful a turn-on to me as a smart woman.)

Pandering to the security moms
August 29, 2008 - 09:17 ET by Prester JohnThe only part of the Obama-ganza I saw was when they introduced the 20 or so generals and admirals who are supported the Annointed One to show the country what a tough guy BHO will be. Other than Clark (relieved early from his SACEUR position), Kennedy (selected to GO because of her gender), and McPeak (probably the most despised USAF Chief of Staff in history), I didn't recognize any of them.

I wonder how long it would take to introduce all the generals and admirals who support McCain? An hour or two?

Greens
August 29, 2008 - 09:34 ET by NonanonI am curious to hear how many greenies have left Obama after seeing the 'environmental impact' the DNCC had to have had. The hypocrisy of Dems doesn't surprise me, but if greenies are to be consistent, they would have to condemn the DNC for this. Now I'll not stop exhaling CO2, but I'm sure we'll never hear a peep out of them until the GOP convention. Then I imagine the 'news' outlets will put them toward the top of the protesters they will be showcasing to 'prove' the GOP is out of touch with America, that is if they even send any crews to cover the convention. Most of them think the election is just a waste of time at this point anyway. May God grant us the joy of seeing the policies of Obama and his cronies defeated in November.
As an aside, I have sent a couple messages through Obama's website asking them how much money they are paying the 'news' media for the campaigning and covering up they are doing for Obama. I am getting canned replies thanking me for my message but since they receive so many, they can't read or reply to all of them. Then they blindly send out messages as to how to donate, donate, donate, and to assist with the camapign. Then there are several written as if O-messiah himself sat down at a computer keyboard and typed them. (I know it isn't him since there are no umms, uhhs, or rambling utterances in them) Then once Joe was picked as VP, the messages were written to appear as if he too were typing them. It is just more of the sham they are pushing, but apparently many can't see through it.
Sorry. Never mind.

It Was All That
August 29, 2008 - 10:17 ET by JoelCTI watched the whole thing. It was everything the Democrats wanted. It was the perfect speech for them. Lots of air about education, starving kids, people getting kicked out of hospitals, dying elderly, dying animals, dying troops, dying mom, lots of big-business-bashing, and so on. No real substance at all, so nothing could be claimed to be a lie later on. Enough nuance to make Sally Quinn blush. A tiny little bit of air to make sure liberal African-Americans know he hasn't forgotten them.
I wouldn't be unhappy with Palin, although she comes up short in experience, and Obama could use that to his advantage. I think the smart choice would be Kay Baily-Hutchison, although, being from Texas, I admit to being very biased towards someone I have voted for since 1993, when young Palin was serving on the Wasilla City Council.
Edit: Darn, as I was writing this, AP popped up: "John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate, two senior campaign officials told The Associated Press on Friday."
I love how AP just HAD to put in "little-known".
Edit-Edit: It has already started, and McCain hasn't even named her officially yet. AP updated their story: "She is three years Obama's junior, as well — and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters."
When I said, "Obama could use that to his advantage", I meant to say, "Obama and his media sycophants could use that to his advantage"

We are more compassionate than a government that lets veterans sleep on our streets and families slide into poverty; that sits on its hands while a major American city drowns before our eyes.
It was Nagin and Blanco sitting on their hands. Blanco waited a day and a half after the storm had hit before requesting assistance. The school buses Nagin coould have used to evacuate the city sat in a parking lot that got flooded out.

August 29, 2008 - 10:41 ET by Rush FanCNN is REALLY in the tank for OBAMA. Just now (PST) Dana Bash is saying that Sarah Palin is going to have a difficult time when she has to go up against Biden who has "so many more years of experience in the Senate" and she has such a short time as governor. What Dana is NOT saying is that Gov. Palin has MORE experience than Barry Obama.
A little bit earlier CNN's John King was speculating that one of the issues in her selection would be if she would be able to find the time to campaign since she had a Down syndrome child. Unbelievable! CNN is making every attempt to poo poo McCain's selection of Sarah Palin.
John McCain finally did it! He couldn't have selected a BETTER candidate for VP. Kudos to John McCain.

As far as Wasilla and her being Mayor, although a very tiny town, not far from Anchorage... it is more experience than Obama has had...let alone her being a Gov. for a short time.
She is pro-life and pro-ANWR, which we shall see if it helps McCain change his stubborn mind about drilling there..which is much needed and been stopped by the likes of people like McCain for way too many years.
Time will tell with the destruction the msm will do if they can.
