For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: VP Joe Biden?
The Washington Post just released a poll suggesting this pick does nothing for Obama. What do you think?
Does Biden's vote for the Iraq War now prevent Obama from pointing his finger at McCain for making the same vote? Finally with the news now out that Obama didn't even vet Hillary as veep, does the choice of Biden further anger disgruntled Clinton supporters?
FYI: The McCain campaign has already released an ad showing Biden making negative statements about Obama and positive ones about the Arizona Senator (video embedded below the fold):

Dumb choice
August 23, 2008 - 09:30 ET by Indiana JoeBiden has his own baggage, the plagiarism fiasco springs to mind. And he's hardly an agent of "hope and change." This McCain ad is perfect, nice of them to take an opening and use it for once. Why settle on Biden, of all people? He brings nothing to a campaign that is supposed to be "new" and "different."
Not vetting Hillary is sure to ruffle some feathers among her die-hard supporters. I'm looking for fireworks at DemCon, at the least. Hil hasn't released her delegates, never formally conceded, Obama's numbers are slipping, MI and FL will get full votes, and her name will be placed in nomination. Looks like the stage is set for a coup. Especially when you remember that we're talking about the Clintons here, the most power-hungry couple in the history of American politics.
Talk about cold, Obama
August 23, 2008 - 10:02 ET by dscottTalk about cold, Obama literally rubbed it in Hillary's face by choosing to send the text announcement at 3 a.m. Hillary said she was ready to be awakened at 3 a.m. as POTUS to receive bad news and make decisions.
The fact that as far as the news cycle is concerned sending a text announcement at 6 p.m. during the evening news allowing the Nets to capitalize on a breaking news story would have given Obama much better press coverage. All I can say is Obama's mean streak is thinly disguised by forgoing choice press coverage to stab Hillary in the eye. I think the Clinton supporters in PUMA (Party Unity My A$$) have this thing correctly pegged. Obama's mouthing Unity and Change is just an Orwellian message.

Adding to your theme….
I think the back-story of the LOSERS may be more important than the story of the winner.
Obama created a circus environment, the vice-presidential sweepstakes just to generate political ‘buzz’…. voters in swing-states Indiana, Virginia, New Mexico may not feel so good about the way their senator/governors were essentially humiliated. Obama’s silly system for selecting VP made these potential running-mates look like LOSERS in a popularity contest. And then there’s Hillary….
Excellent point, Obama loves
August 23, 2008 - 14:21 ET by dscottExcellent point, Obama loves to throw people under the bus after he gets either their money or endorsement to advance his career, just ask the anti-war people. What better than to keep any potential competition at bay by making them look like losers.

about Obama that "I think he can be ready, but right now I don't

In August, Biden was harshly critical of Obama's lack of

Senator McCain can use the above words, straight from the gaffs mouth, against bambi (aka 57 states).

vetting
August 23, 2008 - 09:36 ET by jaywlVetting has become all the rage and sooo very important to avoid picking someone with negatives in their past. I guess the point is to pick a winner. Well, I wonder if there are many super delegates that are wishing that the Obamamann was more thoroughly vetted, oh, wait, he wasn't vetted at all! But if he could have been vetted (love that word), would he have been chosen? With all in his background he would have been a pariah. Shady land deals, hiding public records, black liberation theology of his mentor, segregationist writings of his wife, newly made up jobs for her at ever higher pay at each step Obama made up the political ladder, close relations over many years with a domestic terrorist, the list grows weekly. Can anybody with any objectivity say this man would pass the smell test?

August 23, 2008 - 09:42 ET by HermanoMy wife's grandparents took Biden on as a project and helped get him elected to the Senate in '72. Their only reason for backing him? The political climate of Delaware was boring. They actually liked Boggs, but decided to spice things up a bit. Biden is the opposite of Obama in that he is established and has experience. Too bad Obama has been promoting Change. I wonder how that is goign to play out in the new campaign.
BTW - I do not talk to her grandparents and think they are out of touch with reality. Senile, too.

Biden Compound
August 23, 2008 - 12:27 ET by jaywlMaybe you know this, how much is the Biden compound worth and how did he acquire the property with a negative net worth (opensecrets.org and they do not count primary homes)?
I think it was a stupid choice but won't really hurt him
August 23, 2008 - 09:44 ET by Dee BunkHis supporters should be outraged because Biden voted for the war, but they don't really care because they know the VP doesn't really have any power.
Obama supporters also don't really care about "Change" in terms of being political and nasty and doing anything to get or stay elected. That's why there are no more pro-life or pro-defense Dems. Everything takes a back seat to party loyalty. Nothing is more important to them than just being a Democrat.
Now that McCain is making a commercial like this, he better not pick Romney because Obama can do the same thing.

August 23, 2008 - 12:13 ET by Clear thinkerDid anyone else catch the coverage this morning by Neil Cavuto with the helicopter shots? There was one point that only I in my sick twisted mind would have thought of this... As Biden was driving through his compound this morning on his way to the airport, his SUV stopped at the gatehouse where Grandma eveidently lives. He got out of his vehicle, went to the back door, got Grandma and walked her around to his vehicle and gave her a big kiss goodbye. The whole scene made me think that Joe had just used Granny in a PERP WALK.

The Poll
August 23, 2008 - 13:06 ET by JDWThe poll is interesting. I linked to it elsewhere not knowing this thread was centered on it.Yet it's simply one piece of Obama's problem.
I found an article this morning which described the Biden selection as one of experience. The experience factor immediately started my curiosity so I queried notes.
Obama has never campaigned on experience, in fact always against it. His focus has been on change. His choice of Biden for experience went against all campaign promises.

August 23, 2008 - 13:45 ET by bigtimerHeck I saw that ad late last night about Biden from the McCain camp...brilliant, it sure has got tons of free air play today already...
Biden being picked as VP is one of the stupidest things I have seen from The Chose One's camp...
Btw...two Senators on the dem ticket...one on the repub side and another one who has just suspended her campaign...if we could rid of all of these Senators once and for all when they run nothing could make me happier, used to be that was it if you ran for Prez...of course this has changed since the Clinton era.
No decorum or protocol anymore....zilch.
We tax payers pay their wages to either be a Senator or not...I think we need a new law, once you decide to run, someone else is named or voted on from your state to replace you.
Just my two cents.

bt...I agree.....If they run for a different office....
August 23, 2008 - 14:25 ET by BEGRUNTthey must resign their current position. They have nothing to lose, if the run doesn't pan out, they just go back to their old position. Take Obamatron, he's paid to be a Senator, but has spent the last two years running for POTUS. How much time during his campaign has he ACTUALLY been a Senator? A vote here, a vote there.......absentee Senator. A great deal of them would think twice if they had to give up their seat first to run for POTUS, or any other office for that matter.

Foreign Policy guru? - only in bizzaro world
August 23, 2008 - 15:47 ET by acumenDoes Biden's vote for the Iraq War now prevent Obama from pointing his finger at McCain for making the same vote?
Certainly the above will muzzle Obama....but this might be a better reason preventing Obama from making Iraq a major issue in this campaign --
"I totally oppose the surging of additional troops into Baghdad, and I think it is contrary to the overwhelming body of informed opinion, both people inside the administration and outside the administration." -- Joe Biden Dec. 2006
"There is still a compelling reason to have an increase in troops here in Baghdad and in Anbar province in order to bring the sectarian violence under control" and to "allow the political process to proceed." -- John McCain Dec. 2006
And Biden is considered by the establishment media to be some sort of foreign policy guru for exactly what reason again?
Or...since the surge has
August 23, 2008 - 15:59 ET by dscottOr...since the surge has worked and US troops are going to leave Iraq per the current negotiations anyway, bringing up Iraq during this period of uncertainty regarding the Russians in Georgia means Obama wants to distance himself from the issue since it doesn't work for him anymore. He tossed the anti-war people under the bus after he got their votes and money. The last thing Obama wants to campaign upon is foreign policy or giving McCain something to talk about. Obama is far better off just dropping the subject in order to cut off McCain's clear advantage on foreign policy.

Weak selection
August 23, 2008 - 15:55 ET by GalvanicWhether Obama's choice helps in Novemeber will become evident in the next few days, as all the pollsters will measure the 'bounce' that the Biden selection gives the campaign.
Obama lost momentum this summer, and he needs his VP pick and the Convention to re-ignite it.
Geraldine Ferraro's nomination as VP gave Mondale's campaign an immediate 16% bounce, and they still lost to Reagan-Bush.
For a campaign that talks about change in Washington, nothing says status quo like a career politician who's been a Senator since Nixon was President. The MSM is trying to play up his "blue-collar roots," and CNN even suggests that he's not really a Beltway elitist because he commutes to his Delaware home every night.
He's billed as a brilliant campaigner, yet outside his own state, his Presidential campaigns don't even make it past a few primaries.
And it won't win the hearts of disgruntled Hillary supports, who must be even angrier over press reports that their Hillary hadn't even been considered by Obama's team. We might even hear some boos at the Convention when Biden is introduced.
Biden's poor track record in Democratic primaries, and the simmering anger of Hillary's sheep, could very well add up to a single-digit bounce by Monday morning.
