For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: California might probe Schumer's role in IndyMac bank failure.
California's attorney general is reviewing a request by former employees of IndyMac Bancorp Inc to investigate whether a New York senator triggered the bank's collapse by releasing confidential information. At issue is a much-publicized letter that Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, sent in June to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC) and Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) questioning the company's ability to survive. The FDIC took control of IndyMac on July 11 after depositors withdrew more than $1.3 billion over 11 days...At the time, OTS Director John Reich blamed Schumer's letter for causing the run on the bank. In a letter to Attorney General Jerry Brown last week, 51 former IndyMac workers wrote: "From the day (Schumer's) letter was made public on June 26 until the closure of the bank, a run on the bank took place and the failure became inevitable."
Will Democrat Brown investigate Democrat Schumer? Will media report this if he does, especially as Schumer is scheduled to speak at next week's convention?

August 21, 2008 - 10:51 ET by Roger the ShrubberThis news was definitely a bummer. The Steelers/raiders rivalry of the 1970's were pretty fierce. The Steelers knocked Oakland out in 2 AFC champ games in the 70's, and Upshaw was a beast!
Think about these two teams in the 70's-80's: they won 7 Super Bowls between 75-84.
Rest in peace, Gene.

August 21, 2008 - 09:46 ET by BlondeRe: Shumer, I sincerely hope they pin the tail on that donkey...but I doubt it.
Here's an interesting article from my local paper...Dara Torres has returned home and is "resuming her life". Her Olympic adventure has now made her a multi-millionaire.
This is all well and good, (better than the Clinton's, for sure)....but my question is this: If there's a big pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for these atheletes, does that negate the striving for the love of the sport? Or will young Olympians now have dollar signs in their eyes as do the college football & basketball players, viewing their "amateur" careers as nothing more than stepping stones to the big bucks?
And does this help or hurt sports?

With all the hard work and dedication that it takes to reach that level, coupled with the relative "crap shoot" to actually make the Olpympics and succeed, I don't think athletes can approach the competition with dollar signs in their eyes.
And considering the amount of work involved, I think they deserve to cash in on it as much as they can when it's over.
Swimmers, like Torres, and lots of other Olympic sport athletes, don't really have a "professional" venue in which to showcase their skills as a way to "riches" like basketball players do.

Passion, passion, passion
August 21, 2008 - 18:55 ET by UnsaneI worry not. Especially in the Olympics, the althletes that populate the upper echelons do so not just because of unique physical abilities but because of passion. Michael Phelps may have had a natural gift for being a fish in water, but ultimately he exploited this due to his passion for swimming.
I truly believe that just on the basis of the commitment required to even compete for the possibility of playing in the Olympics, the passion will always come first. You must have passion for that particular even to toil in near total obscurity for many years for the very real possibility that you won't even medal in the Olympics or even go when the time comes.
The Olympics are now under way in Beijing. May the people of Beijing get thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner. May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for the medal ceremonies! USA! USA!! USA!!!

August 21, 2008 - 12:36 ET by sarcasmoConsider what will happen the next time a Republican politician says disparaging things about a poorly run (and we can all agree on this, right? IOW, even if Schumer had totally STFU, that bank would have either failed anyway or else remained poorly managed in realityville) financial institution and it subsequently fails...Some of you will no doubt want to spin it differently if/when that happens, but results should be the same, so if you're advocating a Schumer investigation now you're effectively advocating investigating that hypothetical Republican for his correct prediction in the future.
The investigation which should happen can easily come from the media, at $0 cost to taxpayers. "What kind of political contributions to politicians did this bank's incompetent managers make?" Then you can spin it as vindictive-Schumer if the politicians were Republicans, since there are a few dozen equally-crappy excuses for banks out there which have yet to go tits-up, sadly.
And BTW, like other large-L Libertarians, I've said disparaging things for decades about Fannie & Freddie, and I ran for office once, long ago. Should I be investigated/blamed, now that they're both rapidly flushing shareholder value down the crapper as we predicted, correctly??

August 22, 2008 - 00:05 ET by fitzfongIt makes sense that Schmuckie Schumer would go after IndyMac Bank for originating loans based on minimal documentation. After all, with all the credit reports his staff stole from political enemies, he would have been in a perfect position to provide IndyMac with the necessary documentation.
If any Democrat AG would give serious consideration to this complaint, it would be Jerry Brown. Nutcase that he is, Brown is also a uniquely principled man. That said, word on the street is that the erstwhile Governor Moonbeam is considering a re-run for Governor of California once the Last Action Zero leaves office in disgrace. With Gavin Newsom and Villaraigiosa continually outdoing each other in the competition to embarrass themselves and their party the most, Edmund G. may actually be seen as the "safe" choice. If he's got another gubenatorial run in him, Brown will likely throw all principle out the window and appease the Schmuckster. That said, Schumer is a criminal and has gotten far too poisonous...he needs to be cut off at the knees at some point.
