For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: what will come of Andrea Mitchell's "cheating" statement on "Meet the Press" yesterday?
By now, you've certainly heard that NBC's Andrea Mitchell told viewers the Obama campaign felt John McCain had somehow cheated during the presidential forum Saturday. As this wasn't the first time Mitchell shilled for Obama, the McCain campaign has requested a meeting with NBC News president Steve Capus to discuss this matter, as well as NBC's clearly biased election coverage.
Do you think this is a good move by McCain? Is anything going to come of this? Is Mitchell going to have to explain her behavior, or will she get a pass? What will Capus's response be? Might McCain's "working the refs" strategy have an impact on NBC's coverage moving forward? Might it impact other media outlets' coverage? Any other thoughts?

Go For It!
August 18, 2008 - 09:38 ET by CaringwhiteguyI am delighted the McCain campaign moved aggressively on this. Perhaps I'm a little "old school", but I strongly believe that if a lie is told often enough with no rebuttal, people will accept the lie as fact. McCain's campaign needs to do anything it can to cut this one off at the knees.
Furthermore the campaign needs to vigorously pursue all other such instances. The public seems to understand the bias going on. Failure to respond to reporters who takes sides is a sign of weakness. Aggressively confronting such behavior is a win-win. 1) McCain supporters admire the strong stance (quite the opposite of the way the Bush Administration often acted). 2) Those "undecideds" need to quickly and forcefully see how such deceptions are tilting "news" coverage.
Working the Refs
August 18, 2008 - 10:13 ET by pilsenerI agree that McCain campaign needs to respond quicl;y to the most blatant instances, but it's more important to keep the campaign focused than to "work the refs".
MSNBC is not going to change - they are going all the way with Obama. Ditto Time & Newsweek, NYTimes, the network morning shows, etc. The best that McCain can get from the media is equal air time to get his message out.
Not The Point
August 18, 2008 - 12:03 ET by CaringwhiteguyThe point is not to get the refs to change. They won't. The objective is to make the voting public better educated as to what the refs are doing and why. There are few ways to do that other than to directly confront these creeps whenever misrepresentations of fact are made or when opinions are represented as fact.

August 18, 2008 - 09:42 ET by Cool ArrowI just watched the McCain segment at Saddleback again, and 15 minutes into it, immediately after the "When does life begin" question was answered, McCain is asked to define marriage and he says;
The left will eventually latch onto this as proof McCain was, indeed listening in on the Obama segment. There was absolutely no reference to SCOTUS prior to McCain's comment.
I can see how McCain logically coupled the Abortion issue with SCOTUS appointments, but this is going to be awkward.

When they got to the "when does life begin" question, it prompted McCain to go back to the importance of SCOTUS justices, as part of the abortion debate.
I can see why that discussion made him want to go back to the importance of Supreme Court justices, as he talked about earlier.

August 18, 2008 - 10:20 ET by Dee BunkWhere Cool is talking about, McCain was saying he didn't want to move on from the topic without talking about SCOTUS nominations and was making sure that they would get to it at some point.
If anything it indicates that he didn't know anything because he didn't know if the question would be coming up again.
Both McCain and Obama were given general topics and I'm sure SCOTUS was one. McCain was clearly making sure that this wasn't that topic yet because he had more to say on the issue. It indicates the opposite of what the paranoid conspiracy theorists say.
Another good point
August 18, 2008 - 10:26 ET by Cool ArrowThat's another good point.
It's known the candidates were given certain topics ahead of time to think over. SCOTUS is very likely one such topic.

August 18, 2008 - 10:57 ET by motherbeltCool, I listened to it, and I see your chronology is correct. I don't know why McCain said "are we going to get back to the issue of judges." Slip of the tongue? I don't know.
Even if he had listened to Obama's segment, he wouldn't have said "get back to"...because he himself hadn't been asked about judges yet. I can only guess that it was a slip of the tongue, or he had had in his mind saying something about judges earlier but didn't get the chance.
And I agree, the left will try to make hay with it.
But you know what? McCain can then say well let's do some Town Halls together, then we'll both know what the other one is doing!
And Obama can agree and prove that he can answer imprompu questions. But I don't know, as these videos show the result of a foray into this minefield.
One time he complains that he's tired, and in the other he blames the audience for distracting him.

*I realize Androdia Mitchell will be 62 in October
August 18, 2008 - 10:02 ET by Guy Arthur ThomasThe McCain camp is smart here. "Androdia" Mitchell is NBC'S Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent and gets a great deal "face" (ugh) time during prime time. As well, she has demonstrated a pattern of STRONG bias, not just in favor of The Obamanation, but also manifests antagonism toward McCain.
While lessers might warrant a note here and there, most people understand that people like Goobermann or Matthews are singing to the choir. However, Mitchell is given the status as an unbiased journalist, a trusted neutral source and a major voice of NBC news.
So what this will do is put NBC on notice that while their lap dogs are expected to be biased and sing The Obamanation's anthem, they will be challenged and checked with Trojan Horses like Mitchell. She's already had to apologize recently for her BIGOTRY toward southerners, so her trend toward personalizing news isn't new but this pattern of blatant bias needed checked and good for Camp McCain.
*I realize Androdia Mitchell will be 62 in October and while age itself isn't a factor, for people whose profession in television relies partly on the ability for others to look at their face for periods of time, my guess is that Mitchell is counting on people who have a high tolerance for "Star Trekkian" characters like Ru'afo from the Star Trek movie "Insurrection".
Trust me, the link is worth looking and comparing to Mitchell.

I think McCain should do a commercial about it
August 18, 2008 - 10:07 ET by Dee Bunkwith the them that the media are so swooned that they can't except the reality of him losing a debate.
I think McCain should complain but I don't think it will do any good at all. NBC is over the deep end now and are worse than CBS. The only network with a shred of professionalism is ABC. ABC tries to be fair but they still can't overcome the group think and the fact that they understand and believe in liberals more. I think if a similar thing happened on ABC a meeting could bring about some change but NBC is going to give them lame excuses and won't change a thing.
McCain would probably have better luck talking directly to Mitchell but even that probably won't go anywhere. Bush's people complained about much more outrageous stuff and no apologies or changes were ever made. The only ones who can complain about bias and get action are liberals (especially the Clintons). And of course we all know conservative bias to liberals is letting any conservative opinion on the airwaves. Only liberal opinions should be allowed in their minds.
"Somehow" cheated?
August 18, 2008 - 10:17 ET by j. frank wilsonSurely NB can do a better job of reporting than that. Why not state the facts?
Sen. McCain was late to the event. He and his staff were driving to the event when Sen. Obama was being questioned. It had been announced well in advance both candidates were to be asked the same set of questions. Sen. McCain and has staff had ample opportunity to listen to the event while Sen. Obama was being interviewed.
The stated plan was that the candidate who went second was to be in a "cone of silence" while the first candidate was on stage. It turned out this cone of silence worked about as well as the original.
Obviously, Rev. Warren should have held up the event until Sen. McCain could arrive. Of course, Sen. McCain could have been on time.
Apparently many folks here believe that Sen. McCain finished a one-hour conversation in 45 minutes because he is so experienced and prepared. Others choose to wonder about that.
Whatever side one takes, why shouldn't NB state the whole story and then let the reader(s) decide?

They Were Standard Questions
August 18, 2008 - 10:55 ET by GothampcBut the thing is that none of these questions should have come as a surprise to either candidate. They were all very standard questions that any politician should have been able to easily answer and expect to have been asked.
The only question that I was surprised by was Warren asking about adoption. The rest were all boilerplate: abortion, gay marriage, national security, who would you choose for supreme court, who would you choose to advise you.
His abortion and "Evil" questions were excellent
August 18, 2008 - 11:25 ET by Dee Bunkand something never heard by the MSM. The way he asked at what point the baby deserves human rights was brilliant and is how the question should be asked every time. It drew attention to what the media always gloss over in the liberals position which is that they think the baby has no rights until it is born naturally.
Most people think that abortions are limited to the first three months and don't realize that there are many performed after that and liberals fight any states who try to restrict it in anyway. Obama has the most outrageous position of all and would even allow killing of a baby born alive. This question didn't confront him on that, but it came close to showing how he is unwilling to give a baby any rights until it is born with the permission of the mother.
The "Evil" question is also one that is always ignored by the MSM. Obama wiggled with saying there was Evil and "confronting" it was the answer. Unfortunately he would say how to "confront" it. You can't reason with evil.
Knowing hard questions ahead of time would produce more long winded answers if anything. If McCain had seen how pathetically Obama answered those two questions, he could have capitalized much much more. It's not surprising that a pro-life person would say conception. It's also not surprising that he would defeat evil.
The Obama camp's official
August 18, 2008 - 11:06 ET by Hunter12The Obama camp's official position was that they trusted Senator McCain's statement that he had not heard any of the questions being asked. I guess they know they'll have the MSM to carry the water for them, so they could pretend to be magnamious. McCain shellaced Obama on every issue throughout. If you look at the timestamps on the videos on YouTube, you will see that preliminaries and the first two questions took up a large portion of the time McCain had the potential to listen in. The candidate each knew in advance the first two questions, so there could be no advantage there. Obama's poor performance couldn't be blame on anyone listening in anyway. He needs a teleprompter to be eloquent.

What Will Come of Andrea's Cheating Remarks?
August 18, 2008 - 11:28 ET by mattmThe truth will eventually come out that the MSM is being fed talking points from the Obamic Jihad, and that the Big 0 can't handle himself without help.
I have not yet been convinced that Hillary is done. Watch and see how the Clinton Machine handles the latest Obamistake...
"I have not yet been convinced that Hillary is done."
August 18, 2008 - 18:20 ET by Indiana JoeI have the same idea about Hillary, Matt. The fact that she didn't exactly "concede," and has yet to release her delegates, has kept me wondering. Now, with the news that her name will actually be put in nomination, AND the full-counting of MI and FL, I can't help but wonder what may be in the works. Obama is looking less electable all the time, and a "good of the party" switch isn't completely out of the question, IMO.
One thing's for sure; when it comes to the Clintons and power-grabbing, nothing would surprise me. This could be the most interesting DemCon in years.
Say it plain.
August 18, 2008 - 11:43 ET by ScrapironHussein O got a large barrel of Whoop A** dumped on him and the DNC Networks (ABC,CBS,CNN, NBC) are spending the week trying to scrape it off. Maybe Mitchell should call some of the 'Rednecks' in to show her how hard work is done. Maybe we have a home remedy to remove the stains from 'his royal highness'. Mitchell has resorted to wearing pampers since she wets herself every time she speaks the name 'Hussein' the chosen one. They need to send Blather Rather back to the Texas stock yards to pick up something the world doesn't already know about McCain.

August 18, 2008 - 11:45 ET by Jack Bauerwhine whine whine... yada yada yada. It is worth waiting to hear the liberal response when their nose is smacked by reality.
Don't worry though... as Andrea Mitchell showed, Obama still has the media's DRONE OF SUBSERVIENCE.
You'll note nobody is wondering how come the teleprompter-free Obama managed to produce another um/ah stumble bum performance.
Oh -- who's Obama gonna call when David Axelrod's RF transmission to Obama's earpiece is jammed on Debate night.
McCain wins simply by being NOT OBAMA. If he starts producing debate wins as well, it could be a landslide.

August 18, 2008 - 12:06 ET by Jack BauerThanks sarc ... I have an online account with William Hill and they are offering good odds for the win at 5/2.
But then I did put on $20 for Thompson to be the nom! That's why the bookies always win.
I must check the spread on electoral votes for a McCain win. Might venture $10 at long odds!
It's just a guess, but
August 18, 2008 - 12:20 ET by sarcasmoIMO the somewhat esoteric/risky "Obama picks Nunn or Richardson as VP, to shore up foreign policy creds" bets look better than the odds they're giving. The temptation among insider staffers on both campaigns to help overseas buddies out with bet advice must be overwhelming. I'm rootin' for ya!

Andrea Mitchell...NBC News
August 18, 2008 - 13:07 ET by bigtimerAndrea Mitchell...NBC News (in Rush Limbaugh's imitation of her voice) will get a pass...as usual.
Will this have any affect on the rest of how the msm treats the race or reports...are you kidding...they will get worse...they are in desperation mode....as they should be...they see whats coming down the road...going to slam right in their precious little biased faces come the 4th of Nov.
Just wait until the regular clowns from msnbc get back to their regular scheduled propaganda...you just got to know critters like Matthews and Olbie have to be going nuts....hehehee

August 18, 2008 - 20:06 ET by misterbillHaving spent a great deal of time studying tthe impact of multiculturism on any society, I have become very involved in keeping up with news about illegal immigration.
In sopite of stepped up enforcement and an reported reduction in the numbers (?), I remain skeptical.
Just get off Rt 75 at Rt 92 and check out the GDOT work crews. (Ya better know Spanish.)
Mama just called me, the Closer is starting!!!!!
Some questions
August 18, 2008 - 20:43 ET by UnsaneConsider the following when studying multiculturalism: My mother, grandmother and others immigrated to the United States, and their first language was German. When my mother was enrolled in an American public school, none of the following happened:
1) Out of concern that she needed to keep her heritage, she was enrolled in bilingual education.
2) Nor would my grandmother have ANY of it. (You see, my grandmother had some whacky idea of my mother becoming an American, and thinking that learning English, even if by the hard way, would aid her in that goal.)
3) Nor would her grandmother have anything with her grandson learning German, if she were alive to say anything about it. My mother is still shaking her head about that...
What I always found curious is why certain people have to maintain their culture while other immigrants must become Americans. Try running that by a multiculturalist freak, watch them have a stroke because of their own contradiction!
If my mother couldn't have it, neither can anyone else, in my view. If you want to emigrate here, great! But it won't kill you to learn the vernacular...
The Olympics are now under way in Beijing. May the people of Beijing gt thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner. May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies! USA! USA!! USA!!!
