Despite the huge media hubub that it's caused, the U.S. Secret Service is formally denying an allegation from a Pennsylvania newspaper that an attendee at a Republican rally shouted out "kill him" in reference to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
"We have yet to find someone to back up the story," agent Bill Slavoski told the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader. "We had people all over and we have yet to find anyone who said they heard it."
The alleged remark was first reported by David Singleton, a writer for the Scranton Times-Tribune newspaper. Singleton remains the sole person claiming he heard the offensive words:
Agent Bill Slavoski said he was in the audience, along with an undisclosed number of additional secret service agents and other law enforcement officers and not one heard the comment.
“I was baffled,” he said after reading the report in Wednesday’s Times-Tribune.
He said the agency conducted an investigation Wednesday, after seeing the story, and could not find one person to corroborate the allegation other than Singleton.
Slavoski said more than 20 non-security agents were interviewed Wednesday, from news media to ordinary citizens in attendance at the rally for the Republican vice presidential candidate held at the Riverfront Sports Complex. He said Singleton was the only one to say he heard someone yell “kill him.”
Despite his lonely status (the Secret Service considers the matter "closed"), Singleton stands by his story although he does admit that he has no description of the person he claims uttered the phrase.
Singleton's editor, Jeff Sonderman, is striking a rather CBSish pose on the affair, defending his reporter in astonishingly confident language:
"We stand by the story. The facts reported are true and that's really all there is."
Who wants to bet that the LSM which earlier jumped all over the original story will be as quick to report this denial?
Don't all raise your hands.
Update 2:55. This is the second of two "kill him" reports we've seen. Like this one, the first is all hype and no substance.
While the first "kill him" comment has been confirmed by multiple individuals, as Patrick Frey pointed out on the 14th, this remark was directed toward far left former terrorist Bill Ayers, not toward Obama.
Both of these stories are false. There is not one cofirmed report of a person at a Republican rally shouting "kill him" in reference to Barack Obama.
If you have time, feel free to drop a line to Snopes.com and tell them the facts about this. This inaccurate story deserves to be corrected.

October 16, 2008 - 07:03 ET by rimskyAlot of good it's going to do now! It's out there, truthful or not. It used to be that a lie had to be uttered a few dozen times in order for it to morph into.. let's call it a universal belief. Now days.. shoot, just throw something out there and it's done. Sad times.
Agreed.
October 16, 2008 - 08:06 ET by BigLibertyUnfortunately, I agree --- now that it's been passed around the MSM in various articles, reports, and "common knowledge" on morning shows, its myth-status has been promoted to fact, regardless of the truth. I predict there will still be people *after* the election who vehemently stick to the "kill him" story.
Excellent piece

October 16, 2008 - 09:07 ET by Gary HallIndeed and clearly, Clear Thinker.. Matt, what a crying shame it's up to NB to deliver the news to America's voters.
But what's troubling is how poorly McCain handled it last night. His campaign had in the day or two preceding the debate, had described the "reported event" as just some looney - a lone looney; and that the "reported event" had occurred some 30 minutes prior to Gov. Palin's arrival at that event. In other words, in any event she wasn't there when the imaginary looney yelled what ever crapola he yelled - or didn't yell.
Obama's claim was that Palin just stood there and didn't react to it - didn't call the man on his supposed reported event. Palin was not there at the time.
McCain had a good solid ground just on his own staff's explanation to have fed Obama, and bob the hostess, their lunch on the matter last night. He should have simply called Obama a liar on the spot.
PS - I thought for a second last night that McCain was almost going to say the C word when he brought up the Obama fans with the C Tee's. That would have been more than interesting - in a nationally televised Presidential debate. (;~> gary

October 16, 2008 - 06:27 ET by nofateWhen are you idiots at NewsBusters going to get it? The story has been checked. The Secret Service are known liars, and Republicans at a Republican rally cannot be relied upon to tell the truth. The heroic journalist should be commended for reporting what he heard, not pilloried!

October 16, 2008 - 07:20 ET by nadadhimmiIt doesn't matter if the death threat happened or not. It fits with the msm politics and propaganda offensive. The Democrats all KNOW that republicans are racist, hate filled murderers, therefore the imagined words have the same import as real threats, and should be taken as seriousely. This is just like Dan Rather's "fake but accurate" story. Just wait till the messiah sets up the " community action center for the reporting and prosecution of thought crime". October 16, 2008 - 09:37 ET by Cool ArrowIs it possible you have failed to correct everyone who has made offensive comments while yo've been logged in here?
Likely it's impossible to object to all of it.
Now take the case of four Obama supporters parading around an Obama rally wearing words of Woman hatred on their shirts.
Now tell me how there was not one Obama campaign worker who witnessed it. Farfetched to say the least.
Now tell me what action these campaign workers took to distance the Obama campaign from being associated with woman hatred.
I'm not attacking you, I'm just making a point.

October 16, 2008 - 10:00 ET by shawn228First of all the only time I say something is for example someone wishes that a earthquake wipes out every man women and child in San Francisco or I am trying to have a civil debate and my opponent does nothing but name call.
2nd, I was one of the people that said how disgusting the See you next Tuesday t shirts were. Hatred against women is awful and yes it is a double standard with Dems, but it is different than a threat on ones life
3rd, what does any of what you said have to do with what this post is about? Would you say it is possible that the protesters said "Kill him? It sure sounded like it, but I cannot say for sure.

October 16, 2008 - 10:04 ET by Cool ArrowMy point is that it is impossible for you and me to catch everything we personally object to in this blog, and there are fewer of them here than in a political rally.
McCain has a very good record of objecting to abusive speech at his rallies. I don't think "kill him" should be an issue.
Obama's campaign, however, is forever culpable as they first allowed "Bros before Hos" and made no policy changes to prevent such T-shirts in the future.

October 16, 2008 - 10:18 ET by shawn228I guess I am a prude and IMO saying to kill somebody sounds a little threatening when said it in a angry fashion.
Also the point of this thread is to discount the "kill him" accusation. Again does it sound like someone said those words. I have go to work. Catch ya later CA

October 16, 2008 - 10:30 ET by Cool ArrowBut if we're discussing whether it is or isn't, how can we say for sure the candidate heard it?
I think, however, it is beyond doubt Obama's campaign workers saw the T-shirts and did nothing. Unforgiveable given the other woman hating T-shirts "Bros before Hos". There was plenty of time to make a policy statement between the two incidents.
The logical conclusion is that Obama has a permissive view of misogyny.
Do you really believe campaign workers would have allowed T-shirts with the "N" word emblazoned across them?
Didn't think so.
Underdog & Pitbull 08
they could do so if those
October 16, 2008 - 16:34 ET by dark_dsthey could do so if those wearing the shirts were african americans ... that would be acceptable because it would be considered a term of endearment but whites wearing shirts that said N***** would be "Crammered"

October 16, 2008 - 20:12 ET by shawn228There are many things I do not like about Obama campaign and I am not condoning or defending them.
I also do not know if the candidate heard it "sure looked like it from his expression"
Again, this article by Matt is to pretty much imply the allegations are not true, I am saying that it sure sounded like somebody said "kill him"

Objective journalism is dead in America.
I'd like to see some
October 16, 2008 - 15:52 ET by bigtimerI'd like to see some charges brought against this so-called lying journalist who obviously had an agenda...
I realize he can lie his way out of this...but maybe it would start scaring some in the msm if they had to pay out of their pockets for a lawyer...and the paper too...although I realize most of them have funds to cover such scenarios...
Something has to be done...this was intentional, their agenda/propaganda also worked for a time..
any retraction is a little too late, plus it will be an after-thought buried somewhere and of course little mention with the msm.
This is despicable.

Matt, just like I was saying to CA earlier I am not sure if the words were "kill him" but it sure sounded like it. Also if this was the speech it was documented, how could this clip be directed at Ayers?, McCain was not even talking about Ayers
