While Hurricane Gustav has put things on hold somewhat for the RNC, NewsBusters will be covering the Republican convention this week with four correspondents blogging live from St. Paul.
Joining me here are Ken Shepherd, Noel Sheppard, and Jake Lybbert. We'll be filing reports from the convention floor and around the Xcel Energy Center with special focuses on things you won't see on TV. That's in addition to the rest of our stellar NB bloggers who will be continuing our comprehensive analysis of the MSM's convention coverage.
Stay tuned. Use this post as today's open thread...

Heartless
September 1, 2008 - 10:10 ET by JoelCTYou heartless monsters. Shame on you, Matthew!
How can you be partying up there when people, thousands of people, are dying in New Orleans? I can't believe you can be so heartless. And racist, too!
Seriously, I wish I had the money to come up and visit with you guys. It would be the trip of a lifetime! However, I just put my daughter back in college and those people emptied my wallet and filled up my credit cards for the time being.
Good luck and have a great time!

Obama Blown Away (a sign from God?)
September 1, 2008 - 10:17 ET by AndanteI hope someone caught this. I'm watching FOX weather a few minutes ago and they had a clip of what appeared to be a large Obama banner being blown across a street where it landed crumpled and bent. It happened quickly but I'm hoping someone out there can check it out and post it as proof that God does not want Michael Moore's Obama in the White House.

Meanwhile, watching live FOX shots of N'orlinns, the streets are as empty as a demolibs head, no intelligent life to be found anywhere (does that include the reporters who are standing outside??)?
Anyway, seems some people have learned from the past, maybe there is hope after all.

Well, that's because a Republican Governor, unfeeling bastard that he is <sarc> used "tough love" and said:
There is plenty of time...Get out of town now. If you stay, you are on your own. The Superdome will not be available.
And he won't get a bit of credit when it's over. In fact, if the storm continues to weaken, and is only a Cat 1 when it hits, he will probably be ridiculed for not waiting, and causing all those people needless inconvenience and expense.... and with the cost of gas....it was just irresponsible!

September 1, 2008 - 10:49 ET by Chris NormanI keep looking for a brief unintentional clip of Shep Smith and Anderson Cooper poking holes in the levees. Funny Chris - Shep Smith is the worst
September 1, 2008 - 16:03 ET by Dee BunkI lost all respect for him after Katrina. He's worse than Geraldo. Next thing we know he'll be covering tombs
I lost respect for him at that point in time as well.
September 1, 2008 - 16:52 ET by JWFHe succumbed to the MSM insanity at the time of whining about people drowning in waist deep water and going thirsty/hungry despite having 5 days to prepare for the hurricane.
I seem to remember him being on camera practically crying and begging for help to arrive. Um, help was on it's way. Here is what you, the victim need to do, sit down, relax, drink some of that water you stored up, maybe chew on a fruity bar or a pop tart, and wait for it. And throw something that was floating by, like a twig or a dead fish at Sheppard Smith.
Right...he and Geraldo did
September 1, 2008 - 17:02 ET by bigtimerRight...he and Geraldo did their best to incite riots too as far as I am concerned, they were horrendous...it was the first time after days of them that I called and sent my first email, more than one to a television station...didn't do any good though...and the whiz-bangs at Fox sent these two leftist whiners down there to cover this hurricane today....did anybody catch the drama queen Geraldo this morning when he saw the guy from the cost guard in the water repairing, or turning a valve off on what looked like a propane tank of some kind, who was tied to a life line and had on a float device of course...
Oh he made me sick with his excitement of hoping that was person drowning or dead in the water...
all of the msm is way over-board on all of this...and we have more to go yet.
Plus we all know they want death/destruction for their ratings...the more the merrier for these sick people...let alone the msm stations also hoping for this for political gain and the comparison to Katrina/Bush/Rove/Cheney blame and conspiracy.

I hope you folks down along
September 1, 2008 - 10:20 ET by ricklailI hope you folks down along the Gulf are OK. From the TV reports, it looks bad. Here is a funny little story that should make your day.
Saturday the Tarheels played McNeese State in Kenan Staduim at Chapel Hill. The game ball was to be delivered by two skydivers. Game time came, at 6, and no game ball yet.
Over at DOOK they were on the field warming up to play James Madsion. During the warm ups, both teams looked up and saw two skydivers decending to the field. The skydivers had jumped into the wrong staduim. Wallace Wade at DOOK and Kenan at UNC are only about 8 miles apart. But even from the air, one should be able to tell the diffence.
I wonder if the guy piloting the plane had anything to do with dropping the bulk of the 101st in the wrong place during D-Day.

September 1, 2008 - 12:18 ET by RukusNo Blonde, we don't have a generator, yet. After Katrina they were way too expensive, as was just about everything. We're going on vacation on the 13th and have been saving all we can. The grid we are on is the same as the hospital I work at so the power gets back up fairly quick. It's starting to calm slightly but still a ways to go. The worse part of all these storms this year is the AGW loonies will be all over it, sheesh! You must have heard James Dobson's little homilies? The guy is incredibly sympathetic to the plight of young people who make a mistake. Would his church prefer to see this not happen? Yes. But now that it has, then it's rally around to support them and the baby.
There's NO problem here with the Christian "family values" vote as far as I can see.
They're getting married, and keeping the baby. I look forward to the first leading Democrat to bring this up as an "issue." If they start lecturing about "sex education" and "condoms," then WOW!!

Christians (and other's who have morals) know that there will always be pre-martial sex, abortions, infidelity and other things. The goal is to reduce these behaviors not to demonize people who slip up. Liberals want to encourage these things by saying there is nothing wrong with them.

Dave Barry's convention coverage
September 1, 2008 - 12:27 ET by sarcasmoDemocrats day 1 day 2 day 3 day 4 day 5
Republicans day 1 A selection:
"But the McCain camp is defending Palin's résumé, which, aside from being a governor and a mayor, includes being a mom, playing basketball, hunting moose and being runner-up for Miss Alaska 1984. There was some grumbling among Republican insiders that McCain would have been better off choosing somebody with a thicker résumé, such as Mitt Romney, who actually won Miss Alaska 1984.
But the choice has been made, so the question now is: Does Palin really have what it takes to carry out the duties of vice president of the United States? Specifically, would she go moose-hunting with lawyers? Because if so, let's vote her in NOW."
Dave IS, without a doubt, the funniest living writer on the planet.

September 1, 2008 - 12:37 ET by bigtimerHey I'm glad you fella's are covering the convention there live...
Just wondered if any of you caught the Politico/Yahoo politics discussion this morning with the live audience in St. Paul...I really enjoyed a lot of it for the most part...Tucker Carlson, Rick Davis abc news, A. Huffington, Mark Halperin, plus Peggy Noonan and John Harris leading the way.
I liked the line about some writer for The Politico where he ended it with saying he hoped McCain isn't a drag on the ticket when it came to Palin.
I searched for it on the Politico site this morning and couldn't find it.
Tucker's lines about Palin were also hilarious!
Huffington as usual was the big-mouthed drag.

September 1, 2008 - 13:06 ET by ThisnThatSince it is open thread, just wanted to chime in with an observation off-topic:
CARROLLTON, Texas — Maria Martinez' attempt to land a cafeteria job at a suburban Dallas hospital got her arrested, jailed and deported.
She did use a counterfeit social security on her application to Trinity Medical Center, but her relatives and supporters wonder whether the hospital overreacted by calling the police.
"For an employer to go ahead and take it upon themselves ... to report that is unusual," said immigration attorney Kathleen Walker. "There's no obligation on my part to go call law enforcement. For an employer to go ahead and take it upon themselves ... to report that is unusual," said immigration attorney Kathleen Walker. "There's no obligation on my part to go call law enforcement."
I can't believe this! Overreacting just because someone used a counterfeit social security number?!@&! WOW! I wonder what would happen if I, a U.S. citizen, used a counterfeit SSN? Would someone call the police? And then would someone come to my defense and say that this was an overreaction?
What is this nation coming to, when this type of response is now considered an overreaction and is to be condemned. I am boiling mad right now. Sorry for the rant.

They should not only hire that woman, they should make her President of the hospital. Then they should arrest the person who called the police and hand her over to the mob that will soon be forming over this.

Don't worry about Sarah Palin, I believe she is a female Ronald Reagan and the MSM is in for a rude awakening when they try to beat her up. God help them when they attack her children. Too bad KO couldn't be down here to interview Gustav and look him in the eye. Please pray for the people in Port Fouchon and all the other places that caught the worst of it, they need your prayers. September 1, 2008 - 14:06 ET by Rush FanI hope that NewsBusters has the opportunity to analyse the program that was on CSPAN this morning titled Politics and the Republican Convention. The banner above the title read Republican Nation Convention.
What is strange about the program label is that this CSPAN program had nothing to do with the Republican Convention. The Politico sponsored it and a number of issues were discussed including old vs new media, global warming, Keith Olbermann, and the media's objectivity (or lack of).
The journalists on the stage were packed with liberals. They consisted of Arianna Huffington, ABC's Rick Klein (formerly of the Boston Globe, a NY Times publication), Tucker Carlson, Peggy Noonan, and a well-known Time magazine senior editor whose name escapes me. The Politico's John Harris moderated the one hour program.
The audience consisted mainly of St. Paul, Minnesota citizens, not people attending the Republican Convention as CSPAN implied by the program title. Two of the audience members who asked questions were supporters of Ron Paul and Cynthia McKinney, who is well-known for striking a Capitol Police officer. She also introduced articles of impeachment against President Bush before she was defeated in her House re-election.
As she always does, Arianna Huffington dominated the conversation. Among the things she said that unfortunately were never rebutted by anyone on the stage was that Global Warming is beyond debate, Keith Olbermann is a fair and balanced journalist, and the media was in the tank for George W. Bush prior to the war in Iraq.
What surprised me the most was that the only true Republican conservative on the stage, Peggy Noonan, turned out to be a VERY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. She seemed to me to be in a state of rambling incoherence most of the time, and when she did speak clearly she said (1) that reporters should be centrist in their reporting like Brian Williams (I kid you not) and (2) She longed for the 'old' days when we had the three powerful networks and Walter Cronkite.
As for Tucker Carlson, he refused to speak negatively in any way about Keith Olbermann. To his credit he attempted to argue with Arianna Huffington at times, but he was no match for her forcefulness. She is brilliant at the art of interruption.
All in all it was another hour of liberal tripe labeled by CSPAN as part of the Republican National Convention. Unbelievable!

To all my NB friends, I will no-longer be commenting on McCain.
September 1, 2008 - 21:27 ET by R D HelmI will say nothing positive nor, God-forbid on this site, negative about this man.
It is clear that many of you apparently believe that John McCain is somehow a "friend" to conservatives, and that he will bend over backward to nominate conservative appointees and, more importantly, conservative judges to whatever positions require occupation.
Fine. Believe what you will, but I have apparently lost many friends here at NB due to the fact that I am not a supporter of the liberal John McCain.
From this point on, I will have absolutely nothing to say about the man.

September 1, 2008 - 21:29 ET by Dee Bunkbut it is kind of pointless to go on against him unless you think Obama is better. I haven't noticed you going on an on about him. What Poptech is doing is obnoxious but just stating what you don't like about a candidate should be fine.
McCain is too liberal for all of us. He's just a 1,000 times better than Obama.

September 1, 2008 - 22:56 ET by Dee BunkI do think most people realize that he's not regular Republican. I'm starting to appreciate him more partly because I think he is the only one who can beat Obama. He has lots of demonstrated cases of going against his party and making changes and he's the only one who can effectively show how Obama has done nothing like that.
I could have a candidate that I like a lot better but it doesn't do me any good if they can't win. The media has already ingrained and ruined the Republican brand that I don't think any other candidate would have a chance.
It took me a while to come around to thinking of it that way, but now that I have, I'm starting to like McCain. It's all relative and I like him better than Obama. We will never ever ever get a candidate that we agree with on everything. We probably can't even find a person that we agree with all the positions on. I don't think there is anyone here that I agree with on all the positions.

1. If you have "lost" friends because of your feelings for ** :-}, then f#ck em, they weren't worth being friends with in the first place. Imho, there are truly enlightened people who post here, who understand that having a friend with a difference of opinion is far more fufilling than having a hundred friends with the same opinion. 2. PLEASE continue to be a throwback to another time. Back in the day, people spoke their mind and damn the consequences. "Subtle hostility" or losing ones "friends" didn't deter people from speaking out when they thought it was needed. You obviously don't like ** for a reason and you have felt, up to now anyway, compelled to tell us about it. A Question for my Fellow NB'ers
September 1, 2008 - 22:58 ET by BlondeIn light of Gustav....and the mass evacuations....
Almost 2 million people in the Gulf region evacuated. I'm hearing on the news that no one is to be allowed back into N.O. before Wednesday.
What do you think about that? Is there a good reason for it, or is it just easier on the public officials / first responders? Particularly in an area like New Orleans that was periphially impacted this time around.
I live in a mandatory evacuation zone, but I don't always go, for exactly this reason...once you're out, you can't get back in. On one level, I know that's pretty stupid, but on another, one's home is one's castle.
Any insights / thoughts much appreciated.
David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive
J, this is easy.
September 1, 2008 - 23:12 ET by R D HelmIn a "free" country, no one should be "forced" by government to evac their homes for any reason.
Government has but one responsibility, and that is to protect the rights of citizens.
It is not the responsibility of government to "save" us from either ourselves or our decisions, regardless of how poor those decisions might be.
-Dave.
D, I don't mind the going
September 1, 2008 - 23:22 ET by BlondeIt's the not being allowed back in that makes me furious.
As an example, if you live over on the beach, and come west of the Intracoastal Waterway for groceries & ice or somesuch, once the mandatory evac order is given, you cannot get back! It's absurd. And the cops pull guns, too.
But my question was more in a practical sense.

Blonde,
September 2, 2008 - 01:11 ET by HillbillyKingIt may have sumthing to do with assessing and repairing the damage. I would think that in a "ghost town" figuring out what infrastructure and such that was damaged would be much easier and if the problems were easily corrected, then that could take place much more effecently without the masses trying to get home. It would also allow them to make the required arrangements, if for example, a major bridge was damaged and they would have to divert the flow of traffic back in by some other means.
If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you; But if you really make them think, they'll hate you.

Thanks, hbk
September 2, 2008 - 01:18 ET by BlondeThat may be.
My point, though, is once you go, you can't get back.
On Fox tonite, they reported that it will now be Thursday before they let residents back into New Orleans. Which really didn't get "hit". The powers that be want the "mercantile" businesses (and their employees) back first.
I DON'T WANT A NANNY STATE!
If it's prudent for me to evacuate my 5' above sea level waterfront home, I'll do it. But I want to get back when I want to get back. The hell with what the Nanny Staters want.
So I guess my question was a bit rhetorical. If they're going to prevent me from getting home, I'm not going to leave, I guess they'll have to fish me off my roof. I'll laugh knowing that FEMA will pay for it.
Sorry....I'm getting a bit hurricane twitchy...Fay last week, Hanna by Thursday/Friday, I(don't know the rest) by Sunday, maybe, and a J tropical depression after that....it bites!

CNBC gets it wrong on metal price manipulation
September 2, 2008 - 05:52 ET by sarcasmoFollowing is analysis from GATA's Chris Powell. As you'll see below, they're as factually challenged as the rest of the news media regarding these increasingly obvious manipulations.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:
Somehow the issue of manipulation of the gold market made its way
onto CNBC Europe today as the business channel interviewed Evy Hambro,
portfolio manager for BlackRock Investment Management in London, and
Jill Leyland, an analyst for the World Gold Council.
The program was terribly clumsy with the facts, as the moderator
announced that the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission had issued
a report suggesting that the gold market had been manipulated by
certain banks. Actually, of course, the recent disclosures about the
unprecedented concentration in short positions in gold and silver on
the U.S. commodities exchanges came from GATA consultants Ted Butler
and Rob Kirby, not from the CFTC, though Butler and Kirby might be glad
to accept appointment to the commission. And another CNBC interviewer
talked about world gold supplies of "500 million tonnes," when the best
estimate of all the gold ever mined is less than 170,000 tonnes. (The
interviewer probably was thinking of the 500-tonne annual sales limit
imposed on the parties to the Washington Agreement on Gold.)
But at least CNBC Europe managed to spell "gold manipulation" right,
reported the shortage of U.S. gold eagle coins, and allowed Hambro to
remark with British understatement that recent reversals in several
markets, not just gold, were hard to explain. And Leyland's curt
assurance that nothing possibly could be wrong in the gold market might
have struck impartial observers as a little smug and arrogant.
As it turned out, the manipulation issue was only raised on the
program; the program did not cite a single piece of evidence, apart
from the misattribution to the CFTC of the work of Butler and Kirby.
But maybe the network was expecting everybody to have the wit to look
for the evidence at www.GATA.org.
The CNBC Europe program is 7 1/2 minutes long and you can watch it at the CNBC site here:
