CNN’s Cafferty Pans Hillary, Questions Timing of Hughes Resignation

Photo of Matthew Balan.

CNN’s Jack Cafferty, putting on his conspiratorial hat, questioned the timing of Karen Hughes’ resignation from her post at the State Department during the introduction of his "Cafferty File" segment. "Is it just a coincidence... that Karen Hughes left the State Department the day after we found out that the State Department granted some sort of immunity to 17 -- to these Blackwater guards who are suspected in the murders of 17 Iraqi civilians?" Even with this, Cafferty complimented Hughes as one of the "brighter bulbs" in the Bush Administration.

Cafferty then went on to criticize Hillary Clinton’s failure to answer questions she was asked at the Democratic presidential debate in Philadelphia. "She was also asked about conflicting statements on Social Security, a question she ducked, saying she believed in fiscal responsibility. What the hell does that mean? And when Clinton was asked why she wouldn't release her White House records from the time she was First Lady, her answer was, 'Well, that's not my decision to make.' Baloney, whose decision is it, the Easter Bunny's? Come on." His "Question of the Hour" reflected this criticism. "Why won't Hillary Clinton give a straight answer to the questions she's being asked?"

Cafferty’s comments came 7 minutes into the 5 pm Eastern hour of "The Situation Room." His comments on Karen Hughes came after the program did a segment on the Bush confidante’s resignation. In addition to calling Hughes "one of the brighter bulbs" in the Bush Administration, he complemented her service at the State Department. "[Hughes] probably did as good a job as anybody could have done."

A transcript of his comments on Hughes from the beginning of his "Cafferty File" segment:

JACK CAFFERTY: Is it just a coincidence, you suppose, Wolf, that Karen Hughes left the State Department the day after we found out that the State Department granted some sort of immunity to 17 -- to these Blackwater guards who are suspected in the murders of 17 Iraqi civilians? I mean, how do you sell the American point of view in the Arab street when you're working for a Secretary of State who runs a department that, without anybody knowing about it, gives some sort of immunity to these mercenaries who apparently killed a bunch of Iraqi civilians. There's no way you can overcome stuff like that. I wonder if her resignation had anything to do with that little piece of news we got yesterday.

WOLF BLITZER: We invited her, Jack, to come into 'The Situation Room' today, but she declined our invitation.

CAFFERTY: Yeah, and she is arguably one of the brighter bulbs in that whole administration, and probably did as good a job as anybody could have done. But you can't overcome stuff like this. The State Department that she works for is giving immunity to people who are murder suspects in the killing of Iraqi civilians. That is an impossible hill to get up. We'll talk about that some more in this round table, I guess, that we're going to have later on in the third hour of 'The Situation Room.'

BLITZER: That's right. 7 pm hour.

Cafferty then went to quote from "The Politico’s" analysis of Senator Clinton’s campaign performance. "'Clinton bombs debate.' That's how 'The Politico' describes Senator Hillary Clinton's showing last night in Philadelphia, calling it 'the worst performance of her entire campaign' and saying that for two hours, she 'dodged and weaved, parsed and stonewalled.'" He also included quotes from Chris Dodd and John Edwards, who both attacked Hillary at the debate.

A transcript of Cafferty’s comments on Hillary Clinton from Wednesday’s "The Situation Room:"

CAFFERTY: 'Clinton bombs debate.' That's how 'The Politico' describes Senator Hillary Clinton's showing last night in Philadelphia, calling it 'the worst performance of her entire campaign' and saying that for two hours, she 'dodged and weaved, parsed and stonewalled.' On the top of the list was Clinton's non-answer about whether illegal aliens should be given driver's licenses in New York State. That's the state she represents in the Senate. First came a long, complicated defense of Governor Spitzer's plan. But after Chris Dodd attacked the idea of giving licenses to these people, then Clinton said, 'Well, I didn't say it ought to be done.' John Edwards pounced immediately. 'Unless I missed something, Senator Clinton said two different things in the course of about two minutes.' She was also asked about conflicting statements on Social Security, a question she ducked, saying she believed in fiscal responsibility. What the hell does that mean? And when Clinton was asked why she wouldn't release her White House records from the time she was First Lady, her answer was, 'Well, that's not my decision to make.' Baloney, whose decision is it, the Easter Bunny's? Come on.

Here's the question: why won't Hillary Clinton give a straight answer to the questions she's being asked? E-mail us at caffertyfile@cnn.Com or Cnn.com/caffertyfile.

You know, when Jim Carville told you a few minutes ago it wasn't her best night, I was surprised. He's pretty close to them and a big, big supporter. So, it was fairly obvious to everybody.

BLITZER: Yeah. He acknowledged it himself. All right, thanks very much, Jack. See you in a few moments.

And so it begins...

... the slow, inexorable turn by the MSM against Hillary. As much as she is the DNC's Golden Child and the Great White Hope of the far, far left, "mainstream" liberals are beginning to realize that Hillary at the top of the ticket will guarantee the GOP another four years at 1600 Pennsylvania (not that I would see this as a bad thing).

It's been said time and time again that the candidate leading the summer before the conventions almost never gets the nomination. Maybe we're seeing the beginning of that here.

One can only hope...

The difference between liberals and conservatives is that conservatives believe liberals are wrong, while liberals believe conservatives are evil.

Hillery's Bomb

I emailed this to Cafferty:

The real question is why has it taken the main stream media so long to finally ask her direct questions on important issues. The obvious answer is that she is scripted from the time she gets up untill the end of the day.

How many times has she appeared on news shows and advised them of the questions she will and will not answer in advance, certainly tarnishes that "Smartest woman in the world " image doesn't it.

predict that she will either start skipping debates or she no longer will be pushed to answer direct important questions again.

She is a farce at a time this country needs a strong decisive president. Our enemies must be salavating right now.

And when Clinton was asked

And when Clinton was asked why she wouldn't release her White House
records from the time she was First Lady, her answer was, 'Well, that's
not my decision to make.

Yeah, right, like she wants to release everything but her husband says no. And she's just the little wife, with no say over anything....gotta do what "the man" says. And maybe someone should ask her WHY her husband won't release them? The answer that other Presidents have done it is not valid because this situation has never arisen before.

She cannot be allowed to take credit for anything ("I've had experience on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue") in her White House years if the records are going to be sealed. Someone needs to tell her to put up or shut up about her WH experience.

Now you got me interested.

Someone needs to tell her to put up or shut up about her WH experience.

Good point, more then likly she was told to "bug off" when the importaint folks where talking.

When you wrote:

"Someone needs to tell her to put up or shut up about her WH experience." I had a sudden flashback to John Kerry.

He withholds to this day his significant military records...

Odd, isn't it?

Come on Hillary!

Flip-flop and stonewall yourself into The John Kerry Hall of Flame!

Wow, did you see my

Wow, did you see my Additional Thought" comment a couple below this? (I didn't want to go back and add it to the first one)

welcome to journalism jack

first day on the job is it:)?

Additional thought: Didn't

Additional thought: Didn't John Kerry try this with his medical records, claiming the Navy wouldn't release them?

Well....

Apparently McCafferty has decided that he is an "Obama guy" too, along with Chris Matthews. I guess that a woman president appealed to the vast majority of the MSM until Obama announced his candidacy. It looks like most of the MSM have decided that they would prefer black man as president over a white woman. Keep in mind that they are not racist. No perish the thought. After all, they are going to support a black man, aren't they. See?

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Fred08.com

Cafferty needs to listen to Limbaugh

Rush Limbaugh explained Hillary Clinton from the "pretty in pink" news conference to his hillarious bump about "her not recalling".

Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham are both pathelogical liars and amoral.

As far as Karen Hughs...........not a fan as she failed at making Islamic women feminists to rip a hole in Islam.

As far as Blackwater.......send Cafferty over to Iraq with his big mouth and see how tough he is being shot at every day by terrorists like Blackwater employees are.

When you are the only law in lawlessness Blackwater should be immune as it is a terrorist war.

Wow, she was so bad, even Cafferty is criticizing her.

And he's exactly right in everything he said, including her adroit little two-step on releasing her White House papers.  With that answer, she is obviously saying, "I want to be in the White House but I don't want to be held accountable for what I do there".

Rush & a caller had a ball shredding Clinton's assertation that it was the Archive's fault.  I was laughing so hard I sat in my car for an extra few minutes listening.

Disingenuous.  Did you know there's a picture of HRC in the dictionary for that word?

I must have missed that, darnit.

But they can't just be released, Blonde.  They HAVE to go through the process.  All two million pieces of paper.

20 Million Pieces of "Paper"

But Hillary's, um, husband, won't release them from the CLINTON LIBRARY (not the Archives) until 2009....or was that 2012?

More squirming on HRC's part.

The curtain is moving on the Great & Mighty Oz.

I've been predicting a Hillary melt-down, a la the Wicked Witch of the West for quite some time (must be the Halloween thing getting to me, tonight with my references, LOL). Maybe it's time to start the melt-down pool.

Russert was right to keep

Russert was right to keep asking pushing the fact that it was her husband holding things up, not the archives.

All she has to do is say the word to him, and he should release them. If not, then someone needs to ask HER why he won't. If she can't get him to relelase the stuff, she's too ineffectual to be President.

Disingenuous? Certainly. She keeps wanting things both ways...I had experience (power) in the White House; I can't make him do anything. I was a player; I have no influence. You can count on my experience; no you can't see what I did.

She's also good at deflecting.
Today the line is that she withstood a gang attack.

A Breitbart.com story says

In a new memo, Clinton's campaign rejected the "politics of pile-on" it said were perpetrated by Obama and Edwards and claimed the debate merely served to show she was tough enough to withstand all manner of attacks.

In fact, I just went into the family room and on H&C right now there is a staffer talking about how they ganged up on her and she took it. She's tough.

This is going to be the line...she was attacked. No answers, no
retraction of her flip-flop, no clarification of her obfuscation. Instead of talking about what the answers she didn't give,(which is what they attacked) they talk about the fact that she withstood the attack, and about the "politics of piling on."

Well that's a great way to avoid talking about the substance of what she got nailed on.

Attacked

If that was "attacked"....wait until Rudy, Mitt, or Fred (or maybe even Mike Huckabee) go one on one with her.

She can't go all alpha-male on them, like Al Gore tried to do, with hillarious and disasterous results.  Particularly not after painting herself as being "kind, and charming", blah, blah, blah.

The smartest woman in the world is painting herself into a corner here,  folks.  Eventually she's going to have to just be herself, and that's going to be it.

The End.

This is not a smart move.  It is almost laughable to portray her refusal to answer a reasonable question as an attack on her.

Is this what she is going to do if she becomes President and the American people want straight answers on an important matter?   Or will she just send her husband out to kill the story, as they did with GQ?

Just Remmember...Fire

Okay I can believe now!!!!!!

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

The Grinch in Cindy Lou Who's House

Did you see the smile turn to the snarl?

So let me get this straight. At the Democrat debate on MSNBC, surrounded by Brian Williams, Tim Russert, and the others on stage hoping for the VP nod to get them out of congress ... several of them questioned her? And her little Maxes ran to the spin room to claim she had been "attacked?" "Grueling?" "But she was tough!" Because someone mentioned that she contradicted herself?

  • Jeez, if she thought Chris Dodd was "tough" on her ....
  • Wait till she gets a load of Rudy, or Mitt, or any GOPer.
  • Wait till she gets a load of Putin.

I assure you, my friends .... you know why I know she's going to collapse? Because her own people try terribly hard to keep her away from confrontation. They know how prickly she is, and how that hair-trigger sensitivity will implode her. Her own people betray how fragile her 'juggernaut' really is.

They know how prickly she

On my way to work this

On my way to work this morning, the local radio announced the results of a poll regarding Rs & Ds presidential candidates: Majority voted for Hillary and won against any of the Rs candidates. She is the clear choice amongst the Ds candidates. Here's the kicker...10 minutes later towards the end of that segment, the poll was conducted first week of October!

For crying out loud, that's a month old. Last month's poll is insignificant after last Tuesday's debate. What's the latest poll say?

Finally, the leftoid media and Hillary's rivals are gagging on her. Cafferty's question should also be asked by others in the leftoid media: "Why won't Hillary Clinton give a straight answer to the questions she's being asked?"
