Matthews: I Began as a WFB Conservative

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

In the course of offering a tribute to William F. Buckley, Jr. on this afternoon's Hardball, Chris Matthews made a surprising revelation: that he came to political consciousness as a WFB conservative.

You'll find the transcript of the Hardball host's remarks below, but I'd encourage you to view the video, here. See if, like me, you're struck by the heartfelt nature of his comments.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: If you want to influence someone, get to him or her in high school. It's my experience that people at that age are the most impressionable, the most searching for guidance, for example, for purposes. It was in high school that I came under the charm and the influence of William F. Buckley, Jr., the dashing, charismatic young conservative who wrote God and Man at Yale, McCarthy and His Enemies, and founded the wistful, precocious, companionable monthly, National Review. As a high schooler, I could tell you which drugstore got National Review first. I went to hear Bill Buckley at a meeting of the Montgomery County Young Republicans. It was from National Review that I gained my early affection and appetite for political philosophy and argument.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

To start out as a young conservative is not--let's look at the facts--to end up there. But you have to start somewhere. You have to care before you can think, think before you can change your mind, and in my case, not stop changing your mind. I owe that start to the man who died today at his desk, the great author, writer, sailor of the ocean sea, alpine skier, Renaissance man, and in mine, as in so many millions of cases, teacher, and political guidance counselor.

I offer two last thoughts on Bill Buckley. In the 1950s, when it needed to be done, he exorcised old conservatism from its pre-WW II isolationism, and its redolent anti-Semitism.

There's something else that needs to be said for William F. Buckley, Jr. that concerns his own religious faith. He wrote once of a young man who stood alone in an empty church, juggling balls in the air: it was something he could do--throw balls into the air and catch them without dropping, in a swirly feat of personal mastery. As I said, it's something he could do. It was the one thing he could offer up to God when they were, as best as he could arrange it, alone together. And all the books and columns he wrote, and all the editions of National Review he published, our great William F. Buckley, Jr. was offering up his prayer. This is what he could do. This is what he was doing, his work, at his desk, when he was taken home. To work is to pray. Laborare est orare.

We'll have our future differences with Matthews here, but I might not see him in quite the same light again.

There's an old saying about

There's an old saying about being a liberal in ones youth. And being conservative as one ages. Not sure I agree, but....

Is Matthews telling us he has neither a heart nor a brain?

A heart or a brain?

Which was he lacking when he voted for George W. Bush?

I doubt the world is waiting with breathless anticipation, but I'm mildly interested, if you'll include a brief explanation along with your answer.

Jer

Not very difficult to imagine, considering.

Well I know you were not asking me, but:

Simple, he said he did (if he did) so he can justify his over the top ridicule of Bush. It is liberal nature, 8yr old style.

And what about the times he

And what about the times he has lavished praise on Bush?  Was his vote a justification for that, too.?

Mark F and others... I

Mark F and others...

I too just got done listening to this show although I posted something completely different from a different segment elsewhere...but since you say you may not see Matthews in the quite the same light again, I saw him do something this week-end or Mon. night on C-Span as a host in Tony Snow's place (I guess Tony was ill or such and couldn't be there, so he asked Matthews to take his place) at the Washington Press Club dinner I think it was...anyway he was very agitated at the beginning before he even started speaking, I couldn't figure out why...when he took the podium, he was still aggravated looking, so he tried to get the audience to listen I guess, and they weren't, they were being rude...so finally he said..

"You know, you can tell the difference between a dem. event and a repub event...when you say the word please..the repubs listen...when it is asked of the other side...

NOTHING HAPPENS."

I paraphrased there...but it shocked me, that coming out of Matthews mouth...

Just thought I would share that with you....seems to be some other side of Matthews, then again, he never could stand Bill Clinton for years....or much like Hill as far as I could tell back then.

Very interesting -- thanks

Very interesting -- thanks for passing along. Matthews has said that he voted for Bush in 2000, and I have a feeling that if Rudy had been the GOP candidate this time he might have supported him. It wouldn't surprise me if Matthews has one more sea change in him before he's done, and ends his career as the conservative he started out as.

It is definitely

It is definitely interesting, seeing as someone like Matthews has been to who knows how many events like that.

Two things jump out at me right away though....

1)  Knowing the crowd, he did that only to get their attention, as they wouldn't want to be insulted like that and would then begin to quiet down.

2)  Interesting he called the Washington Press Club a "Democrat event."

bt, I agree with you about Matthews.

I have read his books, and he does have a brain.

I just wish he would remember to bring it with him when he leaves the house to tape his shows.

Barack Obama has no middle name. Just ask John McCain.

So do I.

Believe me...as you well know anyway now that I think about it...lol.

He made me furious this afternnoon on his show here, which I posted some about somewhere else.

How dare this charlatan

How dare this charlatan claim to be anything remotely similar to WFB.  Matthews is more like the Jerry Springer of politics and nothing more.  In fact, I think I just insulted Jerry Springer.

With all due respect, I

With all due respect, I still don't trust Matthews. His actions speak too loudly.

Make up your mind!

"You have to care before you can think, think before you can change your mind, and in my case, not stop changing your mind."

There comes a point in everyone's life when you must "make up your mind" and finally arrive at a definitive conclusion as to your ideals and values. Otherwise, you'll spend the rest of your life in confusion and indecisiveness and you'll never have any moral values to speak of. That’s not a desirable way to live

CobraMan...You said a

CobraMan...

You said a mouthful.

WFB was always very comfortable wearing his skin made of pure conservatism, as am I. This is something Chrissy will never understand. I would love to read anything that WFB may have written about John Sydney McCain. My guess is it's not very flattering.

What about Mattews?

I was talking about Matthews and his avowed indecision about political affiliations. What does that have to do with McCain or Buckley, other than introducing a Red Herring into the discussion? As far as I can determine, nether McCain or Buckley claims that they keep changing their mind about their political affiliations as Matthews has.

CobraMan... Forgive me. I

CobraMan...

Forgive me. I thought you were talking about Conservatives.

Okay, who'll take bets on

Okay, who'll take bets on who will be "Worst Person In The World"... WFB Jr., or Chrissy, who gave a positive commentary on an influential conservative intellectual?

Mark, you're right. Matthews offered some very thoughtful and gracious thoughts on a great man's passing, but he'll say something outrageous tomorrow and we'll be off to the races (demolition derby) again. :)

Couldn't help but notice

That Matthews eulogy for William F. Buckley Jr. was mostly about Chris Matthews

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

William F Buckley

I was saddened by the passing of Mr Buckley today, for what my two cents is worth he was the reason I became a conservative.

When I was 16 years old I was not particularly political but one of my friends was. When Buckley ran for mayor of NY in 1964 he was telling me of William Buckley and I became interested. I tried to help his election as best I could and was lucky enough to attend one of his campaign stops and heard him speak in person truly one of the highlights of my involvement in the conservative movement.

As a side note, my friend never voted for Buckley and didn't remain a conservative, I did vote for him and still  am very much a conservative. He was my initial roll model of conservatism for me later it was only strengthen by Ronald Reagan. Both of my political hero's are now gone but neither will ever be forgotten.
